Pb isotopic ratios

The Crozet Plateau is a 54 Ma-old volcanic plateau that supports five islands characterized by recent volcanic manifestations that are the surface expression of a deep-mantle plume. Due to their remote location and difficult access, the Crozet Islands are poorly sampled. Both the petrological descriptions and geochemical data are scarce. Thus, the sources of the Crozet plume are still under debate. Similarly, the interactions between the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and the Crozet plume remain questioned. Here, we present a new set of isotopes (Pb, Sr, Nd and He), major and trace elements data on basalts from three islands of the Crozet Archipelago: Penguins, East, and Possession Islands. Our main purpose is to characterize the sources of the Crozet plume and to test its influence at regional scale. Two groups of lavas can be distinguished based on the isotopic data: East and Possession lavas, and Penguins lavas. Principal component analyses on our high-precision Pb isotopes data and literature data show that two mantle sources can explain most of the geochemical variability measured in Crozet lavas. A third minor contribution is however needed to fully explain the data. The isotopic composition of lead (Pb) in fugitive dust suspended by a vehicle from 13 unsurfaced roads in Missouri was measured to identify the source of Pb within an established long-term mining area. A three end-member model using 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and concentration as tracers resulted in fugitive dust samples plotting in the mixing field of well characterized heterogeneous end members. End members selected for this investigation include the 207 Pb/ 206 Pb for 1) a Pb-mixture representing mine tailings, 2) aerosol Pbimpacted soils within close proximity to the Buick secondary recycling smelter, and 3) an average of soils, rock cores and drill cuttings representing the background conditions. Aqua regia total concentrations and 207 Pb/ 206 Pb of mining area dust suggest that 35.4e84.3% of the source Pb in dust is associated with the mine tailings mixture, 9.1e52.7% is associated with the smelter mixture, and 0e21.6% is associated with background materials. Isotope ratios varied minimally within the operational phases of sequential extraction suggesting that mixing of all three Pb mixtures occurs throughout. Labile forms of Pb were attributed to all three end members. The extractable carbonate phase had as much as 96.6% of the total concentration associated with mine tailings, 51.8% associated with smelter deposition, and 34.2% with background. The next most labile geochemical phase (Fe þ Mn Oxides) showed similar results with as much as 85.3% associated with mine tailings, 56.8% associated with smelter deposition, and 4.2% associated with the background soil.

Georeferenced concentration of 53 elements (including potentially harmful ones), determined by ICP-MS after an aqua regia leach, were used to produce geochemical maps by means of a GIS-aided spatial interpolation process. Results show that there are two distinct areas: the larger, located between the Fiumendinisi, Budali and Ali villages, and the other between C. Postlioni and Femmina Morta, which contain anomalous As (up to 727 mg/kg), Sb (up to 60 mg/kg), Ag (up to 1 mg/kg) and Au (up to 0.1 mg/kg)

The entire set of isotopic compositions (Pb, Sr, Nd and He) can be explained by a mixing between three mantle sources: (1) a FOZO (Focus Zone) component, with 206 Pb/ 204 Pb higher than 19.5 and high 207 Pb/ 204 Pb, 208 Pb/ 204 Pb 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, 143 Nd/ 144 Nd and R/R a (R/R a = 3 He/ 4 He sample / 3 He/ 4 He atmosphere) ratios, that is mainly sampled Penguins lavas, (2) a component called "East-Possession" that is mostly sampled by the East-Possession lava group and which presents Pb, Sr and Nd isotope signatures similar to those of the Reunion-Mauritius Islands, and (3) a third minor contribution of the local Depleted MORB Mantle (DMM). The new He isotopes data on the Crozet plume allow us to propose that Crozet plume material is present in the segment of the Southwest Indian Ridge located between the Indomed (ITF) and Gallieni (GTF) transform faults. This hypothesis is confirmed by a mixing model based on trace-elements and isotopes data from the ITF-GTF segment of the SWIR and Crozet. We propose that the shallow mantle below the ITF-GTF segment of the SWIR is contaminated by deep material from the Crozet plume.

concentrations. Most of the investigated areas have high contamination levels
for As, Zn, Sb, and Pb that exceed the threshold values (As = 20 mg/kg, Zn =
150 mg/kg, Sb = 10 mg/kg and Pb = 100 mg/kg)# established for soils by the
Italian Environmental Law (Decreto Legislativo 2006, number 152).
The isotopic ratios of Pb/ Pb and Pb/ Pb have been measured in
selected soils on both leaches [using 1M HNO3–1.75M HCl (50:50)] and
residues thereof. Soil leach reflects possible anthropogenic contamination,
whereas soil residues indicate geogenic contributions. Results suggest that
most of contamination in the soils is related to the presence of sulphide and
sulphosalt rock-forming minerals in the surveyed area. The soil fraction
contains a Pb value >1600 mg/kg and has ratios of 1.1695 for Pb/ Pb and
2.4606 for Pb/ Pb. Only one soil leach isotopic composition could reflect
possible anthropogenic contamination. The correlation among As, Zn, Pb
contents v. Pb isotopic signatures of Pb/ Pb indicates that surface and
deep soils collected from profiles are dominated by geogenic compositions.
