They use their unique skills to carry out elaborate heists and robberies, often disguising themselves and using their talents to deceive and manipulate their victims. The novel follows their criminal exploits as they plan and execute various schemes, including a daring jewel heist and a kidnapping. Along the way, they encounter a young woman named Rosie, who becomes involved in their criminal activities and ultimately threatens to expose them.As the story unfolds, tensions rise within the group as personal rivalries and conflicting agendas begin to surface. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Unholy Three

I am a fan of silent film, and originally saw the silent film adaptation of this book. About a year later, I saw the "talkie" version of the film (also starring Lon Chaney), and I loved both. I saw Freaks as well, and became interested in Tod Robbins. I chose to do a final project for a college course on the book and the film adaptations, but, upon reading the book, there was so much in it that I didn't even get to the films.
The book is marvelous, and I recommend it to anyone who likes early twentieth century literature, film, or the strange and macabre.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Give it a shot! It's a Masterpiece.

This novel is a must! It is written perfectly and the writer allows us to know not only the criminals, but also their victims (and, more admirably, he makes you feel sorry for both parts). Robbins succeeds in creating an entire world and a bunch of remarkable characters in few pages and manages to keep you always interested in their "adventures". It is a very interesting, fancy and clever story that will make you think more in deep of your actions and their consequences on others. Because, you know, what is funny for you may be unbearable for another.
Everyone should give this masterwork "a shot"!
P.S.: If you want to read this book because you enjoyed the film (the 1925 or the 1930 adaptation), know this: you are going to be POSITIVELY surprised by the many differences and "cuts" the script writers had to apply. And you'll start wondering how Lon Chaney would have portrayed THIS "Echo".
Again: give it a shot. It's really worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and lyrical

Like many others, I was aware of this book because of the silent film classic directed by Tod Browning (there is also a sound version made a few years later , which I haven't seen). It is interesting to see the differences between the film and book version. While the film follows the book closely, there are some major differences such as the addition of the female character Rosie. But back to the book - it is quite readable, brisk and entertaining. At times, the writing style can be a bit ornate and dated but there are undeniably quite a number of lyrical passages that are quite beautiful. The book is dark and psychologically astute with well-drawn and developed characters. Although written to achieve a big reveal in the last chapters that exposes the major characters deceptions, if you've seen the film, you know what is going on all the time but that doesn't diminish the enjoyment of the book.
