CLIVE STAPLES LEWIS (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a fellow and tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954 when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Mere Christianity, Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics, the Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and been transformed into three major motion pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Lewis saw Pictures

I am trying to read pretty much everything by CS Lewis, mostly because I love his writing and thinking, but also because I am in search of a question about his imaginative and creative travels to Narnia.

This book helped me understand more about how Lewis came up with his stories, and specifically what he meant when he said that he "saw pictures" and wrote what he saw. He himself doesn't know where the pictures came from, but only that once he started writing about them, Aslan came bounding in and put all the pieces together (p. 42).

I was also intrigued by his view that stories which are typically for "children" might better be enjoyed and appreciated by adults. This is certainly true of his stories.

I love good ol' CS and this collection really helped me to understand how he put his writings together. "Ministering Angels" is probably the only work of his that produced a knee-slapping guffaw in me.

This is a gift to a relative in the Armed Forces. I can't imagine a better book to read for someone wanting to write. C.S. Lewis' mind is a wonder to behold. Worth our time and our money.

3.0 out of 5 stars not entirely what I expected

This book is a collection of essays and short stories written by Lewis. There a few fun lines, but nothing outstanding, except the final story in the book. It is Lewis's own tale on the Trojan war. I think that if Lewis had had time to develop it into a fill length novel it would've been epic. But the story is cut short due to Lewis's own life being cut short. If you are a Lewis fan read the book, but don't expect it to be like his others.

Given as a present to my daughter who aspires to be a writer. Who can beat C.S. Lewis.
