L'autore
Michael Moorcock (1939-)
Michael Moorcock is one of the most important figures in British SF and Fantasy literature. The author of many literary novels and stories in practically every genre, his novels have won and been shortlisted for numerous awards including the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Whitbread and Guardian Fiction Prize. In 1999, he was given the World Fantasy Life Achievement Award; in 2001, he was inducted into the SF Hall of Fame; and in 2007, he was named a SFWA Grandmaster. Michael Moorcock is also a musician who has performed since the seventies with his own band, the Deep Fix; and, as a member of the prog rock band, Hawkwind, won a gold disc. His tenure as editor of New Worlds magazine in the sixties and seventies is seen as the high watermark of SF editorship in the UK, and was crucial in the development of the SF New Wave. Michael Moorcock's literary creations include Hawkmoon, Corum, Von Bek, Jerry Cornelius and, of course, his most famous character, Elric. He has been compared to, among others, Balzac, Dumas, Dickens, James Joyce, Ian Fleming, J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard. Although born in London, he now splits his time between homes in Texas and Paris.

3,0 su 5 stelle Not one of the best works of Moorcock
I have read the stories of almost all of Moorcock's other "Eternal Heroes", and I have to say that von Bek (or the different von Beks featured in this volume) is one of the least interesting ones. Though the setting is interesting (Germany during the time of the 30 Years War and during the French Revolution) and the story is also quite compelling, the style of writing is more than a little out of date. Almost all of the characters sound quite peculiar and formal, even when they talk about everyday matters. Not a bad book though, fans of the Eternal Hero series will like it anyway.

5,0 su 5 stelle Moorcock's Best Character.
Von Bek is My Favorite Eternal Champion Persona. He is Courageous , logical and A bit of a Gambler all at the same time. He is wonderful.

5,0 su 5 stelle classic Moorcock
This is fabulous stuff. The language and settings are perfect, everything you could possibly want: Alchemy, occultism, historical fantasy with Lucifer and the French revolution thrown in for good measure. Classic Moorcock a must for fans and a great starting point for anyone new to his work.

4,0 su 5 stelle here combining bad (but enjoyable) Christian Theology with fantasy
The first story is typical Moorcock, here combining bad (but enjoyable) Christian Theology with fantasy. The second story is, to me, an uneasy combination of French Revolution historical fiction intertwined with excessively surreal themes. Towards the end it becomes increasingly gruesome, rather unpleasantly morbid and, perhaps, (if such a thing were possible) just a little TOO O.T.T. even by Moorcockian strictures! The third story is his typical nonsense in short story form.
Not, I think, one of his best. I generally prefer him when he is fantastic all the way through, although, to be fair, I DID much enjoy 'The dreamthief's daughter' and 'Son of the wolf'', both of which go imperceptibly from the real to the fantastic.
