The Stiehl Assassin: Book Three of the Fall of Shannara Broché – 9 janvier 2020

'TERRY'S PLACE IS AT THE HEAD OF THE FANTASY WORLD' Philip Pullman
Following The Black Elfstone and The Skaar Invasion comes the third book in the triumphant four-part conclusion to the Shannara series, from one of the all-time masters of fantasy.
The Skaar have arrived in the Four Lands, determined to stop at nothing less than all-out conquest. They badly need a new home, but peaceful coexistence is not a concept they understand. An advance force under the command of princess Ajin has already established a foothold, but now the full Skaar army is on the march - and woe betide any who stands in its way.
But perhaps the Skaar victory is not a foregone conclusion. The Druid Drisker Arc has freed both himself and Paranor from exile. Drisker's student, Tarsha Kaynin, has been reunited with the chief defender of the Druid order, and is learning to control her powerful Wishsong magic. If they can only survive Tarsha's brother and the Druid who betrayed Drisker Arc, they might stand a chance of defeating the Skaar. But that is a very big if . . . as Tarsha's brother now carries the Stiehl - one of the most powerful weapons in all the Four Lands - and is determined to take his revenge on everyone who has wronged him.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles The Shadow Continues To Fall on the Four Lands
Darkness continues to fall over the Four Lands. The Skaar have invaded, looking for a new home for their people. Drisker Arc has managed to bring Paranor back into the Four Lands. But his task is not complete. Cliza, the Druid who betrayed Drisker, is still at large. Driven to see Drisker fail, she has made it her mission to destroy him as well as the twins, Tavo and Tarsha. To make matters even worse, she possesses the Stiehl; the most powerful weapon in the Four Lands.
Also, Dar Leah, defender of the Druid order, has his own tasks to deal with. Princess Ajin of the Skaar has been relieved of her duties by her father. Banished back to Skaarland, Ajin's airship crashes, but she is rescued by Dar. Now allied together, the two plus the Elf Prince have their own mission that will greatly affect the outcome of future events. They are tasked with testing a new machine that can control the weather and possibly save the land of the Skaar from destruction by the elements.
But Drisker really has the ultimate challenge; defeating Cliza once and for all while helping Tarsha and Tavo understand their gift of the wishsong. Trouble is brewing in the Four Lands; will Drisker, Dar, and the twins be able to overcome it, or will the Skaar succeed in their quest to take control?
I'm a big fan of Terry Brooks, and I've especially liked this series. Each book has gotten better, and the characters come to life right off the pages. I'm eagerly awaiting book four. Highly recommended.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Not what I had hoped for
Terry Brooks is one of my, if not definitely my, favourite author(s) of all times. Although his more recently released stories didn't quite exude the magic of the first three Shannara books, I was, again, more than ready to embrace "The Fall of Shannara", in the hopes that his last strike might be a final return to former glory.
And it all started well with "The Black Elfstone". Then took a turn for the worse with the second instalment, "The Skaar Invasion", and now reached its low for me with the third, "The Stiehl Assassin".
==========Spoiler Alert!!============
What started out as an exciting story involving foreign magical creatures and dangerous adventures to be mastered by a brave fellowship of allies in order to save the Four Lands ... all too soon dissolved into very humanlike narrow-minded scheming and quarreling of greedy people and selfish politics, and a bunch of "heroes" totally unwilling to do what needs doing, incessantly repining why it should be on them of all people to take action, thinking their own personal problems far more important than the fate of their lands.
In other words: It reminds me too much of the world as it is today, and it's just not what I want in a fantasy book.
No spark of magic or wonders to be found anymore.
Even the mysterious invaders turn out to be just the odd ruthless people while their initial magic somehow seems to diminish into not exactly being so important. How so? Their ally, the second adversary, is but an revengeful crone with some, yet not overly special capabilities.
Well, I can't really fear any of them. How I long for the days of the mighty Warlock Lord, the Skull Bearers, the Demon hords and the Mord Wraiths!
What's more, here, there's no hero to root for. The tired Druid who doesn't want any part of this? Tarsha who always plans to act, but just not yet? Her murderous brother who seems to be so weakminded? The likewise murderous Skaar Princess who lightheartedly takes the lives of innocents without ever considering a different approach? Shea -- who I was totally prepared to root for, but -- who does everything in his power to dodge any action of consequence? I can't feel for them. Even the elves let me down.
I'm aware, heroes do have to struggle with their tasks. But they should get over it and act on the looming danger. Quickly. Here, everything they do seems delayed, halfhearted and buried by everyday struggle, while they keep hopping here and there in their airships. No exploring of unknown territories. No encountering strange magical creatures.
I'm missing the mysteriousness, the power and the determination, the dark enigmatic relentless force that was Allanon in the first Shannara book! Maybe it's only me, but I'm at 66% of "The Stiehl Assassin" now and, although I'm honestly trying, I can't bring myself to go on reading.
========= End of spoiler=============
So, you've guessed it, I feel disappointed. I don't think I'm going to make it to the end of the story. And I'm really sorry about that!
Yet, three stars. Because after all, it's still Terry Brooks. It's still Shannara. And Shea, too. So, what else is there to do?
