In 1884, Edwin Abbott Abbott wrote a mathematical adventure set in a two-dimensional plane world, populated by a hierarchical society of regular geometrical figures-who think and speak and have all too human emotions. Thomas Banchoff is Professor of Mathematics at Brown University and author of "Beyond the Third Dimension".

    The complaint of women being treated as one dimensional characters, having only one purpose or function, is a part of public discourse in a way that it probably wasn't when this book was written. Hence, the book makes use of the metaphor of physical dimension to portray societal treatment of women.

    It remains relevant and is a worthwhile read.

    Ce roman devrait réjouir tout les admirateurs de science-fiction et de physique. Ecrit à la fin du XIXè siècle, il raconte l'histoire d'un carré qui évolue dans un espace à deux dimensions et qui va être amené après avoir eu des visions, à reconsidérer l'espace à deux dimensions dans lequel il est piégé. Tous les protagonistes de ce roman sont des figures géométriques, ce qui en fait un livre complètement original et atypique. De plus pour tous ceux qui ont du mal avec la physique, la lecture de Flatland pourrait les aider à comprendre la différence entre un monde à 0, 1, 2 ou 3 dimensions. La possibilité d'une 4ème dimension est même évoquée.
    Il est dommage que le roman soit presque totalement dépourvu d'intrigue mis à part les voyages de ce carré dans les autres dimensions. En effet, la majeure partie du livre est consacrée à décrire la hiérarchie de la société ou le moyen de reconnaissance des autres figures géométriques dans Flatland. De plus le livre est très court (moins de 100 pages).
    Ce roman serait aussi une critique déguisée de la société Victorienne du XIXè siècle.
    Donc 4 étoiles pour l'originalité du livre sur un sujet qui aurait pu être totalement ennuyeux mais avec Abbot on ne s'ennuie pas une seconde, on regrette même que le livre ait été si court.

    This is a book I read when I was a teenager and it really expanded my horizons. The Victorian style also allows to delve into a cultural experience beyond just the scientific one.

    Un bonne petite histoire dans un monde à deux dimensions avec ses soucis propres à sa géométrie. Par contre il est possible que seules les personnes avec un profil "mathématiques" sachent l’apprécier.

    L'édition est de bonne qualité et e contraste sur le papier est optimal pour une lecture sans gêne.
    Je vous conseille cette édition valant bien les autres.

    Contrairement à ce qu'affirme la description, la version brochée n'est pas une édition "Penguin books", il ne contient pas d'introduction par Alan Lightman et, le plus important, il ne contient pas les illustrations de l'auteur. Pour un livre géométrique qui se réfère dès la première page à des figures pour aider à comprendre l'univers décrit dans le récit, c'est ballot. Pour lire ce livre, il faut chercher les illustrations sur le net ou acheter une autre édition..

    The publisher removed all the essential illustrations in this book which the author refers to throughout the text. Makes it almost impossible to understand. Recommend you check other editions to ensure that it has these important diagrams.

    Una obra maestra de la ciencia ficción, imaginativa y fascinante. Edwin Abott, un genio. 10/10. Corto, pero resume nuestra existencia de una manera brutalmente filosófica y científica.

    A short read (~90 pages) and well worth it. I stayed up late to finish it the day I started and quite enjoyed it. I've always struggled when thinking about all those additional dimensions we learned about in math class and this frames it well. A great imaginative adventure from the perspective of a 2D square living in Flatland. Very easy to read, some pictures to boot and fun for young and old.

    Flatland, the masterpiece of nineteenth century cleric and wit Edwin A. Abbott, is an initially slow-going and slightly abstract but also witty and memorable classic of speculative fiction. It can be extremely difficult to put yourself into the 2D POV introduced in this story, but it ultimately pays off when the revelation of a third geometrical dimension comes near the end. The ultimate testament to this story's power is that, while identifying with this 2D world, I was similarly amazed and astounded by this revelation, and I now look around my 3D world with new eyes. How fortunate I am to be living in a world of three dimensions, with all that implies! And through short ventures to lineland and pointland we become all the more aware of the true limitations of our understanding that is imposed on us by the nature of the universe we inhabit.

    Flatland is a story literally bursting at the seams with ideas. The fascinating concepts relating to the philosophy of physics, dimensional mathematics, and epistemology would be surprise enough in such a short and imminently readable tale. But it is also famous for its clever social satire, much of which still carries over today, if not as forcefully (this was specifically poking fun at the social mores of Victorian England, after all).

    Abbott does a good job of giving these creatures a life of their own, though, apart from the ideological and intellectual concerns. We learn about their history, their culture, and get a sense of what it would be like to have grown up this world.

    Finally, if you are religious this book will give you an interesting new perspective on the supernatural.

    What ultimately makes this succeed is that it would be so easy to make this material dry and inaccessible. But this is FUN and absolutely joyous, and is filled with a love of the curiosity and openness to life which characterize the spirit of youth. Flatland succeeds on all counts and I'd recommend unconditionally to anyone who has any sense of curiosity whatsoever or even just enjoys a good story.

    I suppose I should comment on this edition of the book. It is absolutely Spartan: the story and nothing else. Like all Dover publications, the binding is good, and this is the full and original version of Flatland. So there are no extras, but it costs 2$, which is a pretty good deal for this little story.
