Ok this is a fun mix of computers and magic and can that really happen? But you can't leave it there!

5,0 de 5 estrelas The Silent Tower

I bought this as I have the sequel ('The Silicone Mage' avialble on amazon.com, but not amazon.co.uk at present) but borrowed and never bought the first book when they were originally published. I decided to read them both again as I remembered them as being very good.

I am glad to say that it didn't disappoint! The characters are cleverly portrayed and don't conform to stereotypes. There is a twist to the tale and despite having read this about 20 years ago, re-reading this I found myself not trusting my memory as the "twist" is well executed and the characters plausible. The technology is dated but for those of us who remember it, the nostalgia is OK and it is still plausible in most respects.

What is very original about this is that it is a fantasy tale about magic and swords, but it is set in a culture where commerce and industry are beginning to take a form that we'd recognise - the birth of an industrial revolution.

The story involves a character from 'our' world and this is well handled. A plus point as it's where a lot of fantasy starts to jar.

If you like intelligent fantasy, you'll like this. But if you already know Barbara Hambly, you will know that she is consistently good. I started re-reading Immortal Blood
because I was reading 'Twilight' to see if it was suitable for my daughter and was feeling the need for a strong independent intelligent heroine in a vampire novel.

Joanna is the more interesting character and Windrose is the Sherlock Holmes of his world. The Church members are just there to be slightly evil foil to the heroes.

I love Barbara Hambly, her plots are intricate and flawless and her characters are so believable they become part of your life. The wealth of background detail is amazing and every setting she creates is just begging you to immerse yourself. I can't rate her work highly enough she is superb in all the different genres she write in.
