With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 350 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most enduring and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and '40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.

Then too, of course, there is all L. Ron Hubbard represents as the Founder of Dianetics and Scientology and thus the only major religion born in the 20th century.

While, as such, he presents the culmination of science and spiritual technology as embodied in the religion of Scientology.

I enjoyed both these stories. The premises are very simple - in both stories there is a connection between the world of humans and the world of Jinn, and there is some connection between the two to do with waking and sleep. But L Ron Hubbard produces many interesting twists from these connections.

I also couldn't help but be amused by the references to Dianetics being much better than psychology in the second story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Adult Fantasy!

It's refreshing to read a Fantasy that is not geared down to a young teen level. Hubbard is a master of language and an incredibly engaging writer. The two stories here included - SLAVES OF SLEEP and MASTERS OF SLEEP were written 20 years apart, from the beginning and later periods of the Author's career. And rather than being a rehash of Arabian Nights, these stories are completely original and in that fast-paced style that Hubbard is famous for. It's almost impossible to put the book down - just wonderful, clean fun and a joy to read.

These books are why I read. No TV drama or sportscast can top the sheer pleasure available in a simple book. Not only enjoyable, but enlightening, and with stories like these I always walk away feeling good about myself and my fellow man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading and keeping around to re-read

As an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader, I find that I prefer the books of Heinlein and Hubbard consistantly -- they are fun and fast paced and don't take themselves too seriously. This was one of the first I'd read from Hubbard and is one of my favorites; I love the back and forth between alternate universes and didn't see the end coming -- partly because I got so wrapped up in the characters. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves sci-fi from the Golden Age or who wants to try something different.

1.0 out of 5 stars I didn't know sleep could be this exciting!

I can't believe he said that! This was a quote in the forward from a
writer from 200 years ago and they never told me that in school! But
L.Ron Hubbard takes it from there to a whole new level. There are twists
and turns everywhere and it is really hard to stop reading. What is in
that copper jar? Far more than you can imagine. If you are used to
Genie's coming out of lamps, well you won't believe this and
everything that follows. If you are in a jam, take action but hold on to
your seats and be ready for anything is something I got of this. I ended
up taking the book with me just so I could read more and got the
kindle version as well. I had read this before and it was even more fun the
    2nd time!
