Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the writing that is of Henry James in The Turn Of the Screw. This is as classic as a classic can get. This is not your usual horror story (a genre I am not a big fan of and have often mocked). There are no ghosts screaming in the attic or after your blood. This is a psychologically torturous piece of reading, and the words have a way of emanating a chill to the core. That is if you can navigate your way across the writing style. Very typical Henry James, the lines are often long and exasperating and leave you with lots of things unsaid. However if you enjoy that, like me- oh are you in for a treat!
I will attempt to provide a background in a nutshell. A man hires a governess to take care of his niece and nephew in a faraway estate and doesn’t want to be bothered. Strange things start unravelling when the said governess reaches there. Till this point, it is clear. After this, you are on your own to interpret the text and fathom the ambiguities which start arising. Are there really dead people prancing about, are the children being haunted, or is the governess simply out of her mind and she is the crazy one? There are no right or wrong answers. Henry James makes you work, once you start; you cannot stop reading this and you are always suspicious of everyone in the story. The end is also completely open to interpretation.
If you are looking for a typical scary thriller, this is not for you. This is prose which creates an almost physical pressure and nudges you over the edge- it will make you work and leave you bewildered. If that kind of psycho-esque philosophy works for you, I highly recommend you read this.
The Other stories are also great but the Turn had me.

Doğrulanmış AlışverişIt came earlier than expected. Sadly, the book has been bent, scratched, and torn in various places. It has a weird red mark on the bottom and the binding slants to the right. It's definitely a bit out of shape and seems to have been used beforehand. Disappointing, but at least it came in one piece. I'm glad to finally own the book but it definitely could've been handled better.
