Lean Times in Lankhmar Mass Market Paperback – 12 Aug. 1999

Back to back they stand, eyeing their foes over the gleam of sharpened steel ...They are the two greatest heroes ever to walk the world of Nehwon: Fafhrd, the giant barbarian warrior from the Cold Waste; and the Gray Mouser, novice wizard, master thief and unparalleled swordsman. From the moment of their fateful meeting, the legendary duo have adventured and misadventured across Nehwon, from the caves of the inner earth to the waves of the outer sea -- but most of all through the alleys and catacombs of fog-shrouded Lankhmar, greatest of Nehwon's cities. Their lives are chronicled in four books, of which this is the second.

Amazon Review

This omnibus of classic sword and sorcery is a companion volume to Ill Met in Lankhmar, reprinting further exploits of the genre's best-loved heroic duo, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Brought together here are two 1968 volumes, Swords in the Mist and Swords Against Wizardry, assembled from material going back as far as 1947. The first included book takes our heroes rampaging across their fantastic world of Nehwon ("No- when") in short stories that mingle swordplay, horror and wit. Then, in the early mini-novel "Adept's Gambit", they stray into the ancient Earth of Sidon and Tyre to encounter a gruesome foe. Book two comprises two more novellas. "Stardock" sees Fafhrd and the Mouser madly scaling Nehwon's highest mountain (from which the stars were launched at the dawn of time) on a truly vertiginous quest for a gigantic gemstone that proves to be guarded by invisible enemies and monsters. But there are some delightful invisible ladies too, and naughtiness ensues. "The Lords of Quarmall" features complex dynastic intrigue in an underground kingdom where dark magic rules. This tale was co-written with Leiber's small and nimble friend Harry Fischer, the original model for the Mouser--just as intellectual barbarian Fafhrd was based on the very tall Leiber himself. All heady stuff-- Leiber's glittering wit was unique in heroic fantasy. --David Langford

About the Author

SALES POINTS* New and definitive editions of the most influential of all modern fantasy series * 'Most fantasy writers today are continually being compared to J.R.R. Tolkien. This has no bearing on reality. Most of us, if asked, admit that Fritz Leiber is our spiritual father, and for the most part we're sweating to keep up, let alone overtake him' -- Raymond E. Feist * 'The publication of these volumes should do much to help remind readers of fantasy of their debt to a writer who is, in my opinion, still the greatest of us all' -- M

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Sword & Sorcery from one of the masters of the genre

For my money, this volume contains the best collection of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories. Lean times in Lanhkmar (where our heroes nearly split up over Fafhd's decision to become the acolyte of a kindly old priest), Stardock (where our heroes attempt to climb the highest mountain in all of Nehwon) and The Lords of Quarmall (where our heroes find themselves on opposite sides of a civil war between heirs to a forbidden underground city) are my favorites. Adept's Gambit, the very first created F&GM story, is interesting, but not a favorite of mine- strangely, it takes place on ancient Earth since Leiber had not yet come up with Newhon and Lanhkmar.

The cover and a couple of interior illustrations of this edition were done by noted comic book artist and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

This is a Fritz Lieber classic fantasy in the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series. In this tale, the boon companions get religion -- sort of. But when Fafhrd loses the Jug, there are hilarious consequences and the worship of Issek of the Jug will never be the same. The Mouser has a get rich scheme involving the worshipers gifts for Issek's temple that does not turn out quite like he planned. This book is a good introduction to the rest of the Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser series; but they really can be read in any order.

Amazing series and book. Great intro for the characters. Probably the best creations of Lieber. Great artwork by Mignola on a few inside pages as well as cover. I read this series years ago, and am buying them again after loosing them.

The story is good. Vintage faced and mouser. But the thumbnail says it is much longer than it is. Buyer beware
