THE ELF QUEEN OF SHANNARA - Ordered by the Druid Allanon to find the Elves and return them to the world of Men, Wren is taken to an island where they might still exist. Even if by some miracle she locates the Elves, will they follow her?
THE TALISMANS OF SHANNARA - The Shadowen still swarm over the Four Lands, poisoning everything with their dark magic. Their leader is determined to destroy all the Scions of Shannara. The charges are doomed to failure - unless Par can unlock the Sword of Shannara's power.

I had run out of books and someone left a copy of "The First King of Shannara" on the help yourself desk in my apartment block. I did and was hooked - even cancelled a date! really. Then ordered books from this author Terry Brooks. I had always sniffed at adults being hooked on 'books about elves and dwarfs!??! What?!OK sci-fi fantasy perhaps as it has often been prescient but elves? Dwarves & magic ... naaah.'
well I have to finally own up to the error of my ways and admit publicly on Amazon no less - I love these page turners! Easy to read yet very thoughtfully written, the metaphors are endless good vs evil/the journey, the seeking/questioning/the fear and discovering of inner strength and some really good battles.

The mythical lands are always underthreat from evil baddies who conjure up even more evil ... (mmm an eternal theme it seems) and one nation is always getting the worst, when the Druid of the day (depending on the trilogy one is reading) returns to unite various characters and unity prevails to bish-bash evil! Great fun but also serious metaphors. Fantasy, yes but Brooks crafts his characters believably probably his time as a lawyer has given him such insights, and loves and does explore inner turmoil very well.

When it comes to characters Brooks is a very insightful writer, his characters struggle to find courage that they think they may not have and some struggle gaining trust or being betrayed. Wonderful fables ... and as I say, the battles are great too, very plausible, I suspect Brooks has at least an interest in pre-industrial wars - the battles are grand. Better and more worthwhile than a date with a numpty that is for sure!
Really easy, fun reading that anyone interested in political or social history can have the added fun of seeing just how many metaphors they can place.

Having read the Shannara series when they were first published, I was at once taken by the flowing dialogue and descriptive passages of Terry Brooks. As the contemporary successor to Tolkien I feel he has no peer. This book contains all four parts of the second Shannara series and where some writers would begin to flag by the seventh book of the same subject, Brooks capacity to hold and enthrall just grows and grows. The claustrophobic feel of Morrowindle, the island of the Elves, is brilliantly done but it is in the city of the stone king, in the 'Druid of Shannara' where his writing shows total mastery.
I was brought up on the brilliant Tolkien and Moorcock and although not as brutal as the latter of those two, Terry Brooks manages to avoid the trap of trying to copy either and instead relies on his own fertile imagination to grip the reader. A must for any fan and for those who have not yet ventured into the water, this is one Brook you should experience.

Great book, a massive one at that!

Its classic fantasy in a swords and sorcery theme, more than the complex Game of Thrones epic.

Its not set in the Dungeons and Dragons world (but similar) but if you liked any of the Dragonlance books or the RA Salvatore Dritzz books you will enjoy this.

I don't personally think its as good as the Dritzz books simply because he is such a strong character.

However this is a great read and you its a lot of book for the price, and worth getting.

Struggled to finish this, after really enjoying the later and earlier books (started with the Jerle Shannara series, then moved on to the High Druid series before starting at the beginning with the Sword of Shannara trilogy which were really good). Might try others in the series if I saw them in the local library, but not sure I'd buy any more unless I pre-read and liked them.
