Highly successful stand-alone novel by the author of the bestselling Darwath Trilogy.
It was said to be impossible to slay a dragon. But Lord John Aversin had earned himself the name of Dragonsbane once in his life and had become the subject of ballad and legend. Fired by the romance of his tale, young Gareth travelled far and wide across the Winterlands from the King’s court to persuade the hero to rid the Deep of Ylferdun of the great Black Dragon, Morkeleb. With them on their quest went Jenny Waynest, half-taught mage and mother of Aversin’s sons.
Although the most fearsome dragon that Aversin had ever faced, Morkeleb was not the greatest danger awaiting him and his witch-woman. The once-ordered court had fallen into decadence and dissolution, and the beautiful sorceress Zyerne held the King in her sway. Just as Morkeleb posed the greatest challenge for Dragonsbane, so Jenny Waynest would find her powers pitted against an adversary as deadly as the Black Dragon – and infinitely more evil.

5.0 Me encantó
Amazonで購入

5.0 I'm very glad a friend recommended this to me!
Amazonで購入An excellent book with a strong female protagonist and her partner. Lord John Aversin is not your typical hero - he's pragmatic, down to earth and just as happy getting his boots muddy and talking about pigs.
He and Jenny Waynest have a very practical approach when it comes to tackling a dragon. None of this charging in with a lance (to the disappointment of young Gareth who sees life though the songs of the bards). They understand the strength and danger of a dragon and work out very carefully how to improve their odds of survival.
Jenny isn't a typical heroine either. She's no longer in the flush of youth, she has two sons and although she has magical abilities, they aren't strong. She has continual conflict deciding between her magic, which requires seclusion, and her family.
Dragons in this book are as I want them to be. Powerful, dangerous, but beautiful and magical the same time.
Jenny can fight one to save the people it would kill, but can also weep for the loss of something unique.
Recommended.

5.0 Add Another to the Favorites Self
Amazonで購入I thought this book sounded okay when I picked bought it and was completely blown away. I could not put Dragonsbane down after I very quickly fell in love with the characters and world. I am often a little wary when beginning a new series because it means a new world with its own rules and its own creatures that I need to familiarize myself with. Usually it is either done very well or is a word vomit of information that can be difficult to absorb at the very beginning of a new book. This was an example of where it was done very, very well and I didn't feel overwhelmed or half afraid to keep reading. It was almost subtle, the author gave enough information that I had a pretty good understanding of what was going on but didn't know every detail right off the bat. More information was gradually fed to me while I got t know that characters and got pulled further along into the plot.
The characters were very relatable and felt like people I would meet on the street while being unique. The main character, Jenny is interesting without being a Mary Sue when we first meet her. I like her well travelled and knowledgeable personality without the arrogance. My favorite part? Jenny has some faults! She's not perfect, she's not the most powerful witch in the world, she's not the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, she's a person. A realistic person who gets sucked into a plot that she doesn't start out at the center of! Her lover, John is probably the next most interesting character in my mind. He is sought out to be the hero, but I was very surprised and very pleased to meet, not a classic hero who is the greatest knight the realm has to offer, but a realistic person with his own unique characteristics, goals, and issues. He even has a few faults! He was so interesting! I might even go as far as to call him my favorite character in the book! The supporting characters were also memorable with there own unique characteristics and personalities without drawing attention away from the main characters or the story.
I am a huge dragon fan and I adored the take on the dragons in this book. At the risk of spoiling the book for fellow readers, I will only say that I was pleasantly intrigued by the different faces of the dragons within this book. It wasn't the classic depiction of 'evil dragons' but they weren't fluffy, overly humanized dragons either. They were DRAGONS, they weren't arrogant, immortal, scaled, flying humans with a superiority complex. They were otherworldly beings with different customs and views than the humans and other creatures within the world.
There were other creatures besides humans and dragons, ones that weren't human and ones that were both scary and somewhat horrifying. The creatures weren't in your face, distracting from the story and taking up too much time though, they were part of the story and the were part of the world.
I could go on about this book, but I don't want go spoil it for fellow readers. Needless to say, Dragonsbane has made it onto my favorite books shelf!

4.0 Fantasy for intelligent readers
Amazonで購入I just finished reading this book last night, and overall liked it; the themes are the contrast between drab reality and heroic fiction, dragonslaying the old-fashioned (male) way, and subduing them with the power of intelligence and will as the female protagonist does. I also like that the female protagonist is middle-aged by the standards of her world. If I give only 4 stars it is because the female villain did not altogether convince me, and most of the secondary characters remained two-dimensional.
