A whirlwind fantasy classic set in the richest world imaginable, with unforgettable characters and the highest stakes – The Time of the Dark is the first book in Barbara Hambly’s epic Darwath Trilogy.
Gil Patterson is a woman familiar with dark stories.
As a student of medieval history, she knows the Crusades, the Black Death, and the horrors of life in the Middle Ages. But it is another kind of darkness has begun to stalk her dreams: when she falls asleep she sees forces of evil assaulting a beleaguered kingdom, whose kind people are on the brink of annihilation, and awakes each morning in a cold sweat.
Gil dismisses the dreams until a wizard appears in her apartment. He has crossed into her dimension, passing through the fraying fabric of the universe, to ask her help. For mankind to survive he must protect an infant prince, whom he plans to hide in Gil's world. The student of history is about to get much closer to evil than she ever imagined.

5つ星のうち5.0 Gritty, Suspenseful, Compelling.
Amazonで購入The Time of the Dark reminds me fondly of many of the books I read back in the early 90s of people being shifted from out modern world to some alternate world that was full of magic and dire creates. Barbara Hambly contributed to that genre with her fantastic series.
This book focuses on two people pulled out of their daily life in California when they get caught up with a wizard escaping the destruction of his city on the other side of the Void. Once over the Void into the lands of Darwath, the real story unfolds.
The descriptive imagery of how this series is written is one of the biggest draws. From the start of Gil’s dreams, to Ingold’s exploits, to Rudy’s back-story, the narrative draws you in and makes the characters stand out. You find yourself turning that next page, wanting to know what happens, and invested in how the characters develop. These are ‘real’ characters that embody traits of people you know. That’s what makes this series stand out.

5つ星のうち4.0 Excellent word populated with generic characters
Amazonで購入I like the world and the sense of dread about the dark is superb.
But the I have never seen a Mary Sue archetype character as extreme as this. She goes from nothing to elite guard in a few days.
The Garry Sue male version character is better because although he is clearly innately gifted at least he has some flaws even if these flaws become irritating.
Giving this a 4/5 because I read it decades ago and the world stuck in my mind so I looked for it but once I tracked it down and read it again the characters were all stereotypes and Mary/Gary Sue (protagonist is perfect) was so blatant.
