I'd read A.E. Waite's Book of Black Magic and Ceremonial Magic (derived from historical grimoires) some while before reading the two novels contained here when they were first published. The rituals and demonology quoted are genuine, though deliberately partial (Blish didn't want his work used as a manual). This adds a chilling realism to a fantastic plot, in which the world is forever drastically changed.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
