5,0 van 5 sterren Held My Breath All Through!
I’ve been reading/re-reading the Chanur series since the early 1980s because it still holds up as one of the best Science Fiction epics I’ve ever read.
CJ Cherryh has an unerring talent for creating sympathetic characters you absolutely love, and an incredible imagination in developing entire species with such detail that they are each fully knowable and are utterly believable as beings to learn about and interact with!
In this book, everything that had been building up throughout the series comes to a head, and it is a heart pounding, breath stealing stress ride for almost the entire book, and it is by god frikkin awesome.
Pyanfar Chanur remains, for me, one of the most dynamic, sympathetic, powerful characters ever developed in fiction. Bloody LOVE these books!

5,0 van 5 sterren I love this author!
I love this series. It is so refreshing to read a story written from a nonhuman perspective. Want something totally different then you got to check out this author. Chanur series was wonderful and The Faded Sun trilogy is absolutely great!

5,0 van 5 sterren Fantastically good! A masterwork!
What makes C. J. Cherryh one of the finest authors of Sci-fi is her ability to literally put you into the viewpoint of an alien race. She does it so well in fact, that you can find yourself having a hard time getting back to thinking in purely human terms whenever you have to put the books down, even briefly. [Which, fair warning here, you will find very hard to do.] After immersing yourself in the heads of her aliens and their well developed cultural and psychological constructs, you can actually find other humans puzzling and strange!
The first time I read the set of Chanur books, I finished them in one long marathon effort, then immediately turned around and reread them again immediately. They are just that darned enthralling. I consider books 2 through five to be in the top twenty books I have had the pleasure of reading! [The first book is not as fine a read - but is still good and it sets the stage for the rest.]
The first four books of the Chanur series [this is the fourth] follow Hani Captain Pyanfar Chanur's thought and actions as captain has to puzzle out changes in the behavior of the Kif [a race that is as foreign a space-faring species as you can get and still be an oxygen-breathing one] and a strange mostly-hairless new race that is a stranger to "Compact space". The Compact is a region of stars occupied by a several space-faring civilizations. The Compact is neither a political organization, nor a government; it only regulates open trade and accessibility of space stations to all civilizations- oxygen and methane breathers alike, leaving them to resolve their conflicts and politics between themselves. It is up to Pyanfar to navigate the threats to her ship and clan and eventually all of Compact itself that is brought about by her decision to shelter a single strange creature.
Fantastic book of a fantastic series! It's only flaw is that she's not written more then 5 of these books about the Compact region.

5,0 van 5 sterren A Rollicking Great Adventure.
Cherry has a knack of making aliens as understandable as humans and humans seem like aliens. The entire Chanur series is a masterpiece.
