Shinkai Haru is the lead protagonist in Digimon Universe Appli Monsters.
Profile[edit]
Haru is kind, calm, gentle, and sensitive. He is able to make decisions based on his own judgment and remains strong in the face of adversity. Curious and polite, he possesses good intuition and loves reading, but is completely hopeless at physical activities.
Whenever his friends need help, Haru does not hesitate to lend a hand and can act decisively when necessary. However, he is initially very insecure and lacks confidence in himself and his abilities. He even considers himself a secondary character, admiring the protagonists of the stories he reads and longing to become the main character of his own story. Over the course of the series, however, he gradually becomes more confident and determined.

Anime[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
Haru was born on July 1, 2003, and lives with his mother in Tokyo's Fujimizaka district. In 2016, he attended the local middle school (Class 1-C) alongside Ai, Yujin, and Watson. On October 1, while returning home, he came across an Appli Drive that emerged from a vending machine. Shortly afterward, Gatchmon, having just escaped from Leviathan, emerged from his smartphone. Gatchmon attempted to convince Haru to join the fight against Leviathan, but Haru was initially reluctant. However, after witnessing Gatchmon bravely battle Messemon, an Appmon infected with the L-Virus, Haru resolved to help and unlocked the Appli Drive, allowing Gatchmon to materialize. Together, they succeeded in defeating Messemon.
In the weeks that followed, Haru and Gatchmon frequently battled Appmon infected by the L-Virus, who repeatedly caused problems for app users. They also searched for the Seven Code Appmon, who were said to possess the power needed to defeat Leviathan. On Halloween, Gatchmon evolved into DoGatchmon for the first time during a battle against Scorpmon. Some time later, Haru and Gatchmon encountered two other Appli Drivers, Eri and Torajiro (also known as Astra), along with their Appmon, Dokamon and Musimon.
In December, Rei stole the Chips of Ropuremon and Gomimon from Haru. Haru and the others attempted to follow her trail into the Net Ocean, but were ambushed by Sakusimon. Unexpectedly, Rei and Hackmon arrived to help them, forcing Sakusimon to retreat strategically. Haru and the others then discovered that Hajime, Rei's younger brother, had been kidnapped by Leviathan. After Sakusimon's defeat, Rei returned the Chips before departing on her own once again.
With the arrival of the new year, Haru learned that the voice within the Appli Drive belonged to his grandfather, Denemon. Haru, Gatchmon, and the others then investigated Denemon's old laboratory, where they met Timemon, who revealed the story of Leviathan and Minerva, the creator of the Appli Drives. Some time later, Haru risked his own life to save DoGatchmon, but Timemon intervened and fused with him, allowing DoGatchmon to evolve into Globemon.
Manga[edit]
Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
In the manga, Haru and Gatchmon meet right in front of the vending machine where the Appli Drive comes out. Shortly after, they face Navimon and Tubumon: after defeating the former, Gatchmon evolves into DoGatchmon and defeats Tubumon as well.

Digimon Universe Appli Monsters[edit]
During the subquest "Chasing Seven Code Appmon", Kashiki Ai sends Kazuki/Itsuki to look for Haru, as they were meant to meet at a big park in Hifumigaoka but both went to two different ones. Kazuki/Itsuki found Haru on Blossom Park, where he was talking to a businessman in the middle of a disappearance issue. Haru quickly realized it was an App's fault. After Haru left to help a woman going through the same issue, the businessman then explained to Kazuki/Itsuki that the Illusion app disappeared all of his smartphone's data after he guessed wrong on its game.
When Kazuki/Itsuki confronted the guilty party, Trickmon, they were forced to undergo the same game, the Illusion Challenge. However, before they could pick, Haru stopped them, revealing himself to be an Appli Driver. Haru's Buddy Appmon, Gatchmon, then Appliarised and called out Trickmon for having no actual winning boxes, which Haru thought was likely because that'd be a typically villainous thing to do. Haru then had Gatchmon use his Deep Search to search the Net Ocean with the keywords "box" and "contents", which confirmed all boxes were duds. While Haru ordered Trickmon to behave as its trick was foiled, Trickmon instead decided to erase both Appli Drivers in rage.
After being defeated in combat, Trickmon surrendered and pledged to never play tricks again and restore the deleted data, then left. Haru and Kazuki/Itsuki then thanked each other, while Gatchmon proudly stated how good Haru's searches were. Haru then remembered Kazuki/Itsuki somehow knew his name, and they explained Ai sent them for him. Haru was shocked that two big parks existed in Hifumigaoka as Gatchmon had found the park they were in. After promising to go get Ai, Haru asked Kazuki/Itsuki if, as a local Appli Driver, they knew about the Seven Code Appmon. Haru explained he was looking for them and Gatchmon had found one of them was in Hifumigaoka, which Gatchmon clarified meant that "the loud one" was "in a lively place". Haru wondered if a Seven Code Appmon could merely be searched, which annoyed Gatchmon, while Kazuki/Itsuki realized they knew of an Appmon that fit that description - MCmon of the Cyber Arena. With that knowledge, Gatchmon quickly left, with Haru following him.
There, Gatchmon quickly confronted MCmon, who confirmed he was a Seven Code but would only help Haru if he fought Kazuki/Itsuki with MCmon commenting over the fight. Kazuki/Itsuki agreed, as they wanted to face off against Haru. Haru used Messemon + Ropuremon, then Ropuremon + Navimon. After they were beaten, Haru had Gatchmon and Navimon AppGattai into DoGatchmon as his trump card. While this was still not enough to win, Haru was satisfied with their fight, though Gatchmon was more focused on the Seven Codes. Haru then pointed out that MCmon wasn't a Seven Code and MCmon admitted he lied for the views. Gatchmon asked why Haru didn't say anything earlier but Haru pointed out he tried, Gatchmon just wouldn't stop talking over him, and besides he also wanted to fight Kazuki/Itsuki after seeing how happy they were. Gatchmon refused to give up on the info he had searched so Haru agreed to stay on Hifumigaoka a bit more, though he thought he was forgetting something - namely, Ai who was still waiting at Fountain Park. Haru and Gatchmon then left.
Kazuki/Itsuki met up with Haru and Ai at Fountain Park. Ai was surprised at how well Haru and Kazuki/Itsuki got along and Haru pointed out they'd stay at Hifumigaoka for a while if anything happened. This finishes the "Chasing Seven Code Appmon" subquest.
Haru is the final opponent of the DoGatch Cup Tournament. Before the fight starts, he quotes Gatchmon's catchphrase. He uses the same Appmon as in the previous fight.
After finishing the sub quests of Asuka Torajirou, Karan Eri and Katsura Rei, Kazuki/Itsuki met up with Haru again in the Cyber Arena, where he went to ask them for a favour. Kazuki/Itsuki thought it was about the Seven Code Appmon but Haru now knew none of them were in Hifumigaoka. Instead, Haru explained that to find them, battle was sometimes inevitable, so he wanted to do an exchange match to learn more about the local Appli Drivers. MCmon explained that meant a tournament between Haru's group and the town's Appli Drivers where they could improve their skills and friendship, and he could get a lot of views. The tournament would be a 4 vs 4 match with individual battles, starting the sub quest "Fujimizaka Exchange Match?!". With Kazuki/Itsuki agreeing to join as the last member of the Hifumigaoka team, Haru and MCmon called everyone else. After the Hifumigaoka team formed as Kazuki/Itsuki, Naoto, Makoto and Mio, the Fujimizaka team then joined them: Eri, Astra (who MCmon originally called Torajirou, annoying him) and Rei. After Astra and Eri went through their catchphrases, Kazuki/Itsuki was shocked they were all Haru's friends. With that done, MCmon declared the "Exchange Festival" (交流戦, Kōryū-sen) started.
Round 1, battle 4 was Makoto vs Haru. Ouji found the battle intense and exciting, with Makoto's seemingly plain but calculated moves confusing Haru. Kayo agreed with that. Makoto took it as an insult, as if they were telling him he fought and lost plainly, but Haru told him he was really strong. As such, two members of each team passed on to round 2: Kazuki/Itsuki and Naoto from Hifumigaoka, and Haru and Rei from Fujimizaka. Ouji thought their battles would be worth watching, as Kayo said his profile was worth watching.
Semifinals, battle 2 was Naoto vs Haru. According to Ouji, there wasn't a big skill gap between them but Haru was enjoying the battle more. Naoto attributed his defeat to losing his composure because Kazuki/Itsuki defeated Rei, though Mio told him not to blame his defeat on others. Haru thought Naoto was incredibly strong.
Finals was Kazuki/Itsuki vs Haru. Ouji believed were nearly equals in skill and commented that Haru's DoGatchmon was a Super Search Appmon, so they should assume he already knew all of Kazuki/Itsuki's data and give them a fight beyound their limits. Kayo, from her part, fantasized about DoGatchmon also knowing all of Ouji's data. Mio cheered for both of their Appmon. Makoto told Kazuki/Itsuki to stay calm. Astra was totally feeling the finals. Eri threatened both participants with a Dokkan Punch if the battle was boring. Haru opens the fight with DoGatchmon + Timemon, which AppGattai into Globemon. He follows that with Dreammon and Dezipmon, both Applinked with Timemon. He also uses Sociamon and Sateramon for Appli Skills.
While Haru lost, he wasn't sad about it, since he had learned a lot from the battle and had fun. Ouji commented that both of them had shown strong bonds with their Buddies and had a great battle, but Kazuki/Itsuki had proven themself stronger. Both Ouji and Kayo congratulated the winner, though Kayo had to add that things would've been different if Ouji participated. Mio thought all the Appmon did their best and congratulated Kazuki/Itsuki. Naoto expected nothing else from his rival but warned them things would be different next time. Makoto thought every Appli Driver who watched the battle would be itching for a battle too and congratulated Kazuki/Itsuki. While frustrated, Astra had to admit he had totally felt the battle and congratulated both sides. Eri admitted that she may be the center of the universe but Kazuki/Itsuki was the center of the Arena. Haru thanked Kazuki/Itsuki for the battle and both exclaimed how much fun they had had. With MCmon thanking everyone for playing, the Exchange Festival tournament and the "Fujimizaka Exchange Match?!" sub quest ended.
The Exchange Festival can then be replayed as a normal tournament. The battles are the same as in the story: Astra, who is more fired up than ever; Rei, who isn't there to make friends; and Haru, who finds battling with Kazuki/Itsuki more thrilling than reading books and refuses to lose to them. All of them use the same Appmon as before.
Haru is the final opponent of the Globe Cup Tournament. Before the fight starts, he tells Kazuki/Itsuki that he knew they'd come, not because he searched for it, but because that was his guess, his hope. He uses Globemon + Oujamon. He also uses Entermon, Revivemon, and Biomon for Appli Skills.
Search App: "An Appli Driver boy from Fujimizaka! He's kind-hearted and loves books. His Buddy Appmon is the search app's Gatchmon! Man, such a great taste! He came here in search for Seven Code Appmon...huh? Don't ask me where they are!"
