Tuesday Tutorial with Iris

Hello Whimsy Friends it's Iris here today and Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday here on the Whimsy blog. I will be showing you a partial embossing technique using our NEW Slimline Embossing Folder Thatched with a self-made embossing frame using the Slimeline Marquee Die

Here is what you'll need to create this card:

Slimline Thatched embossing folder
Best Best clear stamp set
Layered Dahlia clear stamp set
Slimline Marquee die

Slimline card base, topfold in black 3.5" x 8.5"
Orange cardstock layer 3.25" x 8.25"
White cardstock 3.5" x 8.5"
2-4 cardboard panels 3.5" x 8.5"
Scrap pieces of black cardstock for sentiments

2 different colors of orange ink (light and darker)
2 different colors of green ink (light and darker)
White ink pad, white gel pen, stamp positioning tool,
glue, foam tape, purple tape, masking paper, alcohol or water spritzer,
die cutting machine, paper cutter, scissors, stylus, wax paper,
foam pad or mouse pad, a few clear sequins or confetti

Here is how to create this card:

We are starting by creating the embossing frame. This frame is what allows us to partial emboss the pattern onto our white cardstock layer. There will be no pressure applied to the windows so that it will leave unembossed areas and giving us a nice smooth space to stamp on.
Depending on the thickness of your cardboard you will need about 2-4 Marquee frames. The completed frame should be about 1/16". This is not a set value just my experience. It also depends a lot on your machine and the pressure it applies. You might need to do several test runs until you are satisfied with your result. You might need more or less frame layers. In my case I used heavy weight 140lb watercolor paper and layered 4 frames on top of each other.  I am using a Vagabond die cutting machine.
Glue all your frame layers together and use purple tape (or any low tack tape you might have) to adhere the frame, centered on top of the embossing folder (see picture above). Now you are ready to go.

Take your piece of white cardstock and spritz it slightly with water or alcohol to make it more pliable. This will prevent the paper from cracking while embossing, especially with thicker paper/cardstock. It also gives a better embossing result that is more clear and crisp. But be careful not to wet it too much then it has a reverse effect and might rip easily.

Put your cardstock centered in the embossing folder like you normally would. Depending on your die cutting machine you have to figure out what the best sandwich will be. Like I mentioned above I am using a Sizzix Vagabond machine. I put my embossing folder and frame directly on top of my extended multipurpose platform - NO cutting plate underneath! - with both tabs closed. Meaning in my case it sits right on top of tab 2. Then I place a cutting plate on top. (You might have the same sandwich if you are using a Big Shot). Now run it through your machine.

Here is the result. Our cardstock is nicely embossed leaving the areas where the windows in our frame were nice and smooth.

Tip: If you want to make the unembossed areas stand out even more you can do this little trick. Using a piece of wax paper rub slightly over the unembossed areas. Put the cardstock on top of a foam pad and with a ball stylus and the help of the embossing frame trace around the outline of the windows. This makes the windows more pronounced.

I stamped my windows using the Layered Dahlia clear stamp set by Crissy Armstrong. I recommend using masking tape while stamping to avoid getting ink on the embossed areas. I used two different tones of orange ink for the blossoms and two different greens for the stem and leaves.

When you are done stamping the flowers trim your embossed cardstock to size (3" x 8")
I used words from the Best Best clear stamp set to create my sentiment strips.
I stamped with white ink (Hero Arts Unicorn) onto black cardstock.

Tip: Often when you stamp with white ink onto dark cardstock the coverage is not perfect. Even if you are using a stamp positioning tool and stamp the sentiment repeatedly. I find that it never really comes out perfectly with the white ink (no matter what white ink I am using). If that happens I'll take my white Gelly Roll 10 pen and slightly trace the letters. It makes my sentiment look perfect. I highly recommend the Gelly Roll 10 as it is slightly thicker than the regular Gelly Roll pen and the ink comes out very smooth. It's also important not to apply pressure and work slowly as you do this.

Ok, so now it's time to assemble and decorate our card. I glued the embossed layer on top of the orange cardstock and then adhered both with foam tape to the black card base. I then added the sentiment strips with foam dots. A few clear confetti sequins finish off our card.

I hope you liked this partial embossing tutorial and give it a try. You can create embossing frames with any die shapes from your stash. Have fun creating and thank you for visiting us here today on the Whimsy blog!

Tuesday Tutorial - Pine Boughs and Ornaments

Hi Whimsy Friends, Iris here. Today I want to show you how I made this card using the Pine Bough background stamp , Elegant Ornament clear stamp set and Elegant Ornament die

Here is how I made my card:

To create the background I started out stamping the Pine Bough background stamp onto Strathmore mixed media paper
using Versafine Clair Morning Mist gray ink.

Then I used Karin Brushmarker Pro pens and a waterbrush  to color the image.
I added finishing touches with Faber Castell Polychromos pencils.

Colors used:

Karin Brushmarker Pro:
Olive Green
Olive Black
Curry
Praline
Rosewood
Sepia
Arctic Blue

Faber Castell Polychromos:
Van Dyck Brown
Dark Sepia
Light Blue
Dark Phthalo Blue
Ivory

To give the Elegant Ornaments some extra shine I stamped 2 of the Christmas bauble images onto thick, clear acetate sheet with Versamark ink. I carefully heat embossed with Ranger Enchanted Gold embossing powder.

I die cut the acetate ornaments as well as some plain ornaments from violet shimmer cardstock using the Elegant Ornament die.

I also stamped the Merry Christmas sentiment from the Elegant Ornament clear stamp set on acetate sheet
and heat embossed with WOW Pearl Gold Sparkle embossing powder. I then cut it out using scissors.

My card base is a A2 size, top fold. The black layer is 4" x 5 1/4" and the white layer
measures 3 1/2" x 5".  I adhered the embossed clear acetate ornaments on top of the violet die cut ornaments using glue.
Then I arranged everything on my card front before attaching all the layers, pine bough background, ornament and sentiment.
As a final touch I decided to add some gold half pearls as strings for the ornaments.

Now onto my spooky birthday card I've created especially for this frightfully fun event:

I am using some older and newer products on my card but the main focus is on 'Dracula I compel you' together with 'Dracula's Coffin' die set. For the background I cut out a window from a 4" x 5 1/4" white cardstock panel using the 'Wavy Stitched Squares' die set. Then I added a piece of designer paper from the 'Vampire' 6x6 paper pack. I adhered this panel to a red 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card base.

I stamped the Dracula image with Versafine Clair ink onto mixed media paper, colored it using my Karin markers and fussy cut it. Then I die cut the tombstones from the  'Dracula's Coffin' die set from scrap pieces of the same Vampire 6x6 paper pack. The trees are die cut from black glitter paper using the 'Tree Assortment' dies. The bats are created with dies from both the 'Dracula I compel you' and
'Dracula's Coffin' die set and cut from black cardstock. The scull was die cut from white cardstock and slightly inked with Antique Linen  Distress ink. The sentiment is included with the 'Dracula I compel you' clear stamp set. The RIP sign is from the 'Build-A-Graveyard' die set.
I arranged my items the way I wanted them on my background panel and then adhered them with liquid glue and foam tape/squares. At last I added tiny red rhinestones to Dracula's eyes and also eyes to some of the bats with a white gel pen.

I wanted the inside to have a matching sentiment too and stamped with Versafine Clair Nocturn ink and embellished with a few stamped bats. All stamps I used on the inside are included with the 'Dracula I compel you' clear stamp set as well.

Whimsy Stamps and Therm O Web are teaming up once again for a fabulous week of inspiration and prizes! Be sure to visit both blogs all week long for some amazing ideas and to enter to win!

Hello Everyone, welcome to day 2 of  the Whimsy Stamps and Therm O Web Collaboration.
It's Iris here today. I' am sharing 2 cards with you today where I used different Whimsy Stamps products together with Therm O Webs Electro-Pop Neon products.

On my first card I used the Rina K Electro-Pop neon enamel transfer sheets (Poppin' Pink & Orange Glow) and neon glitz paste (Poppin' Pink) together with the Primitive Shaker Shapes die set (Stars), Twinkle Stencil and Bold Statements.

How to create my card:

Card base in white, top-fold A2 size; black cardstock panel 1/4" smaller than card base,
white cardstock panel 1/2" smaller than card base, white cardstock, black cardstock

Using the white cardstock panel and the Twinkle Stencil (sprayed with Pixie Spray Stencil Adhesive)
apply Rina K Electro-Pop Neon Glitz paste in Poppin' Pink to upper half of the cardstock panel.
Let dry completely.

Meanwhile add Transfer Gel Duo in a thin layer to a piece of white cardstock.
The paper piece should be big enough to die cut several stars from it.
Let the Transfer Gel Duo dry completely for about an hour.

After it's dry cover with a piece of each orange and pink Electro-Pop Neon Enaml Transfer Sheets (Rina K).  Now run it through a die cutting machine or a laminator to adhere the enamel transfer sheets to the paper. Cut out several stars using the Primitive Shaker Shapes.

Stamp Sentiment onto black cardstock with embossing ink and heat emboss white; cut to desired size.

To assemble the card adhere the black cardstock layer onto the card base and the white cardstock panel on top of the black paper . Arrange and stick enamel stars with foam tape over twinkle design.
Add sentiment.

Here is my second card and I used the following products:

Electro-Pop neon enamel transfer sheets in Poppin' Pink and neon glitz paste  in Poppin' Pink together with the Beaucoup Bouquet clear stamp set, Speckled Heart Stencil and Magical Birthday Wishes clear stamp set.

How I created my card:

Card base in white, top-fold A2 size / landscape; kraft cardstock panel 1/4" smaller than card base,
 white cardstock

This time I used the
Rina K Electro-Pop Neon Glitz paste in Poppin' Pink together with the Speckled Heart Stencil (sprayed with Pixie Spray Stencil Adhesive) on kraft cardstock. Let dry completely before continuing.

added Transfer Gel Duo in a thin layer to a piece of white cardstock again.
Let it dry completely before covering with a piece of pink Electro-Pop Neon Enamel Transfer Sheet (Rina K) and running it through a die cutting machine or a laminator. I stamped the flowers from the Beaucoup Bouquet clear stamp set using Staz On Pigment black ink and fussy cut the images.

I stamped the sentiment with Versafine Clair ink on the kraft paper panel before adding the flowers with foam tape. Finishing off the card by adhering the kraft layer to the card base and adding some rhinestones to the flower center.
