The Story Shop #PuffinIsland by Christie Barlow #NetGalley @0neMoreChapter_ #romance #family #friendship #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today of The Story Shop by Christie Barlow, this is the 3rd book in the Puffin Island series and it is another wonderful book.

My huge thanks to One More Chapter for allowing me a copy to read and review via NetGalley.

When travel writer Jack Hartwell arrives on Puffin Island amidst a terrible storm, he stumbles into The Story Shop, the island’s quaint bookshop.

Seeking refuge, he finds himself immersed in Amelia Brown’s enchanting world of books, puffins, and an eccentric group of book club regulars. So when the enigmatic Amelia challenges Jack to read a mysterious novel The Temptation Bucket List – and to complete its challenges with her – he can’t resist.

But with Jack’s time on Puffin Island ticking away, the stakes rise. The final item on the list? To share a secret that no one else knows…

MY REVIEW

Once again, I return to Puffin Island and visit The Story Shop, this is the 3rd book in the series. Just like the Love Heart Lane series, the book could be read as a standalone, but it’s not something I would suggest because the previous books are amazing!

Amelia runs the bookshop and, along with her love of books, she also has a love of the Puffins, whether it is a scrunchie in her hair or on a jumper, there is usually a puffin embellishing her outfit somewhere.

Jack Hartwell arrives on the island and soon finds himself outside, then inside the bookshop. He keeps his identity to himself, as he has been asked to write an article about the island. All sounds innocent enough, but lurking in the background is something to turn any mood sour!

There are some characters that are already stalwarts of the series, they may not be related to Amelia, but they have known her for years. The group are supportive and they soon push Amelia out of her comfort zone. To be honest, while she did need a push, it was more of a nudge as she was already leaning in a certain direction anyway. But looming overhead is a court case, secrets, and distance.

Jack definitely wasn’t looking for anything, but he arrived on the island and soon made friends. However, he lives in London. He doesn’t know how the future will pan out, especially if people find out the real reason he is on the island.

Oh, secrets, secrets and more secrets. It seems the main players in this story all have something to hide. I will say that the mystery of working out the reasons behind each one was well played out, I did have an inkling, but not till further into the book and then I wasn’t exactly right!

The author has a wonderful way of exploring the nature of her characters and also throwing the odd curveball to throw the reader off the scent. This book has several misdirections, and this adds to the charm and also to the different emotions of the story. At times, the book deals with some tragic events, and at others, there is a massive cheer of giggling and screaming with joy.

I absolutely adored this book and if you have read any of the others in this series, then you are going to adore this one. It has drama, mystery, friendship and romance, with surprises and some wonderful scenes. I would definitely recommend this book.

Many thanks for reading my post, a like or share would be amazing 🙂 xx

Still the One by Aimee Brown @BoldwoodBooks #romance #romcom #NetGalley #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today of Still the One by Aimee Brown. This was a lovely light-hearted romance and rom-com read.

My huge thanks to Boldwood Books for inviting me to read this title via NetGalley. My views are my own.

Eve Cassidy thought Guy Foster was the only man she would ever love. Theirs was a whirlwind romance and marriage – until it all ended in tears…

Five years after their break-up, Eve still hasn’t found a reason to believe in true love. But when Foster has an accident and she discovers she’s still listed as his next of kin, Eve knows she can’t let him wake up in hospital with no one by his side. After all, those devilishly blue eyes have always been hard to say no to…

Foster isn’t sure if his poor battered brain is playing tricks on him when he sees the only woman he’s ever loved sitting next to his bedside. Maybe Eve never got over him like he never got over her? And when Eve agrees to him moving into her one-bedroom apartment to recover, it’s clear these exes have unfinished business.

Will weeks in close quarters be the making or breaking of this smouldering second chance love story? Up close and personal, old habits can be hard to break.

MY REVIEW

After reading several crime, thrillers, and heavier books, it is really nice to pick up something that is easier on the brain and that I can just sit down and enjoy. Still, The One is such a book. It has drama, mystery, and romance but is a wonderful story with some great characters.

Eve Cassidy and Guy Foster had been married, it had been a whirlwind romance and they were very much in love. However, things did not last and Eve left Foster. It has been 5 years since the split and even though they are separated she is still aware of their wedding anniversary. Now working in an ER department of an Oregon Hospital she is shocked when Foster is brought in, life-threatening injuries, a critical condition and suddenly her world is turned on its head once again. Foster had pushed his luck too far on his latest motocross appearance!

This is a wonderful book to settle down with, as did one Sunday evening, and read from cover to cover. The storyline follows that once lovers have separated, they are forced together and admit they still have feelings.

I have to say there are some wonderful and colourful characters in the story and they all have varying degrees of input as far as advice, opinion and just basic comments are concerned. The main characters have stories to put right before they can work out the next step, if they have a future as friends or if there may be a chance of something more. I enjoyed the will they/ won’t they balance as this kept me guessing. There are a couple of bombshells that are dropped but overall a lovely story with some lovely moments and a good smattering of humour.

I do think this is one for fans of rom-coms, romance and general light-hearted books. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I would happily recommend it.

Many thanks for reading my post, a like or share would be amazing 🙂 xx

The Bookshop at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash @KimTheBookworm @rararesources #romance @BoldwoodBooks #contemporaryfiction #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today for The Bookshop at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash. This is the 4th book in the series and another fabulous story to read.

My huge thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on the Blog Tour and for arranging my copy from the publisher Boldwood Books

Escape to the beautiful coast in this heart-warming romance

Dare to dream big…

When Nancy opened her dream bookshop overlooking the golden sands and shimmering waters of Driftwood Bay, she may have taken on a little too much. She might know all about books, but doesn’t know the first thing about business! She did however, want to do something meaningful with the inheritance money she got from her beloved Aunty Theresa.

When Dennis, visiting grandson of one of her dearest friends, offers to help, Nancy knows she can’t say no. Dennis is a high-flying businessman, with a fancy London job and a successful banking portfolio to prove it.

Trouble is, he makes the worst first impression. Nothing short of an insufferable know-it-all, Dennis takes every opportunity to remind her how out of her depth she is.

But Nancy knows her strengths, and just as much as she needs Dennis, he needs her too. There’s plenty she can teach him, and the more she shows off her world of Driftwood Bay, where the pace of life is slower and the morning sunrises are the most beautiful thing you can witness, perhaps they could become more than just business partners?

MY REVIEW

This is another fabulous book in the Cornish Cove series, I love this series; this latest book has some new faces and some old ones.

Nancy had wanted to open a bookshop, and after receiving an inheritance from her Aunt she has her dream come to fruition. One problem though, is that she is not exactly business-minded and there is more money going out than coming in. Dennis is stopping with his Grandmother, Vi. If you have read the previous books you will certainly remember this “says exactly what she thinks” character.

Dennis meets Nancy and while there is a sort of attraction they are two very different people, Dennis is a business analyst and thinks about money and making the most he can. Nancy is a dreamer, believing in fate and what will be, will be. A clash of personality and opinion doesn’t make the best first impression, but Dennis has a very good reason for wanting to help Nancy turn her bookshop around.

This is another fun read and it had me chuckling on a few occasions. But there is something more serious for our characters to overcome and that is very much to do with their pasts and also how they perceive things to be. It doesn’t help that Nancy’s brother has also been kicked out of his house again and it seems to prove that relationships are not something that everyone can have or make work.

There is a lot of tension simmering through the story and this has been done very well with the other subplots the whole thing comes together wonderfully. Opinions and observations are shared, and some soul-searching is required for several of the characters and the residents of Driftwood Bay are eager to help out where they can. I do like how the author has brought in new ideas for the bookshop and it fits in so well with Nancy and the way she sees life.

I really enjoyed this book and it was wonderful to be back at Driftwood Bay with the characters and the community. A fabulous story and one for fans of contemporary fiction and romance. I would definitely recommend this one.

The Pumpkin Spice Café by Laurie Gilmore #romcom #fiction #bookreview

I am delighted to share y review today for The Pumpkin Spice Café by Laurie Gilmore. I have seen this one doing the rounds and decided to give it a go. A fun rom-com and a good one for the chilly autumn nights.

A spicy small-town romance,

When Jeanie’s aunt gifts her the beloved Pumpkin Spice Café in the small town of Dream Harbor, Jeanie jumps at the chance for a fresh start away from her very dull desk job.

Logan is a local farmer who avoids Dream Harbor’s gossip at all costs. But Jeanie’s arrival disrupts Logan’s routine and he wants nothing to do with the irritatingly upbeat new girl, except that he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her.

Will Jeanie’s happy-go-lucky attitude win over the grumpy-but-gorgeous Logan, or has this city girl found the one person in town who won’t fall for her charm, or her pumpkin spice lattes…

MY REVIEW

I saw this book doing the rounds and decided to give it a try. It is a fun book to read and kept me entertained.

Jeannie takes over the running of the Pumpkin Spice Café in Dream Harbor. She has spent most of her life working hard, and the chance to run the café may help her mingle with others. It is not the start she hoped for as there seems to be something amiss with the café. She almost takes out a delivery guy, odd sounds and some random things are going on.

Luckily for her, the delivery guy is a local farmer, Logan, he brings fresh produce to the café and he is single. While there is some initial attraction between the two of them, the locals are very wary of anyone who may want to break Logan’s heart again.

This is a fun read and one that is very easy to while away an afternoon with. Some underlying storylines gradually emerge and on the whole, it is a good read. There are some obvious stereotypes and tropes in this book that give it that cute, sweet, will they/ won’t they vibes.

This is the first book in the series and I will be reading the next one. This is a cosy autumnal read that has some spicy scenes and will be ideal if you are looking for a quick easy and cheeky read. Happy to recommend this.

The Cornish Beach Hut Cafe by Jane Linfoot @0neMoreChapter_ #Netgalley #romance #contemporaryfiction #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today of The Cornish Beach Hut Cafe by Jane Linfoot. This is part of a series, but each book can be read as a standalone. I spent a wonderful sunny afternoon in the garden reading this from start to finish.

My huge thanks to One More Chapter Publishers for granting my request to read this book via NetGalley.

Florence May never expected to trade the high life of London for the cosy comfort of a beach hut in her Cornish hometown, but the moment she steps inside she knows it was the best choice she ever made. The fact that it comes with a requirement that she sets up a business on site? A minor setback that’s easily fixed by opening up a surfside outpost of her friend Clemmie’s Little Cornish Kitchen … where Floss finds herself unexpectedly flourishing.

And when the hotel owner next door sets out to buy the land out from under her? Floss calls on her loyal friends to help her save her little slice of heaven. Because if there’s one thing the community of St Aidan does well, it’s banding together to make the most of every second, whatever life throws at you.

MY REVIEW

Another fabulous book in the series, and don’t worry if you have not read any of the books yet as they can be read as stand-alone.

When Florence, aka Floss, comes back to the Cornish village of St Aiden she is hoping for a spot of peace and quiet. The Beach Hut is going to provide her with that, unfortunately when she moves in she discovers that to be there she has to have a business. Luckily for her, she has wonderful and amazing friends and they all pile in to help where they can for Floss to remain in the Beach Hut.

Further along, the beach is another newcomer, it just so happens that she knows him. I won’t spoil how it is she knows him, but I will say that has nothing to do with them being in a relationship!

The author brings back some favourite characters, and there are some new additions, one makes an appearance at the beginning of the book and another further on. This reminds Floss of what she is not able to have and the battles she has been through.

She is tough and she has been through some challenges, but she is not alone, she has her sister and her Mum, but, well they are not all on the same page. Add to that, an opinionated teen, a dog, a spot of swimming and starting a new business, well there is enough to keep Floss on her toes.

The author has brought in some serious themes to the story, one of which is something that the author knows of. I didn’t realise this when I read the book, but there were things in the story that felt personal and it made sense when I read the Authors Notes.

As well as squabbling families there are some serious moments for Floss and her new neighbour to sort out. Plans to develop the bay, sort out new recipes and get plans in place to save a local feature are all part of this story. The main focus, well one of the main ones is the Beach Hut Cafe. Floss has her unique twist on what makes a pudding and now I have read this book I can see myself having a go at some of the ideas. Luckily there is a recipe section at the end of the book to help with that.

This is a gorgeous book that flows well, the sense of community and friendship is strong as are the tempting delicious puddings and bakes. The story is about finding your own self and working out how to be happy in your own skin. There is romance and humour and a certain amount of flirting which all works well within the pages of the book. Fabulous story and one I would definitely recommend.

How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley @PenguinBooks #NetGalley #contemporaryfiction #romcom #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today for How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley. This is a fun read and one that takes some interesting turns.

My huge thanks to Penguin Books for accepting my request to read this title via NetGalley.

When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she’ll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards.

The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign—but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide.

When the city council threatens to sell the doomed community center building, the members of the Social Club join forces with their tiny friends in the daycare next door—as well as the teenaged father of one of the toddlers and a geriatric dog—to save the building. Together, this group’s unorthodox methods may actually work, as long as the police don’t catch up with them first.

MY REVIEW

Oh, what a fabulous book this one was. After a few weeks of reading mainly crime novels, I decided to pick this one up. While it is not a crime, it does have crime within!

This book starts with a minibus of elderly citizens, a baby, a teenager, a dog and young children being pulled over on the motorway by the police. They are looking to arrest someone. The problem is… well some on the bus are all too ready to confess to their misdemeanours!

Lydia is a married woman, in her 50s and feeling sad about her life, she is struggling with menopause, her children are growing up and her husband doesn’t see her anymore. Her companions are those at the local community centre who are senior citizens, not exactly the life and soul of the party. But, she soon discovers there is more to them than meets the eye, especially when they get the bit between their dentures over an announcement that they might be losing the centre.

If there was ever a book about growing old disgracefully, this one must be on your list. It is a fun story that takes on the most interesting and unexpected turns. From a ceiling collapsing, to yarn-bombing, covert investigations, dodgy dealings and some very fun events, mishaps and shenanigans. This book seems to have a huge amount covered.

While this is a fun story, there are also some serious aspects to it. You don’t get through life being squeaky clean and there are going to be some things that you have done that may not be exactly proper. Luckily for us, the reader has decided that her characters have had some interesting lives, there are years of experience, wisdom and dodgy advice to be had.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a mix of contemporary fiction, with a mystery threaded lightly through, some very good humour and laughs and an adventurous group who appear to be more than willing to be led astray.

If you are looking for a fun read then have a look at this one. I enjoyed it and hope you do too. I would definitely recommend it for a lighthearted read.

Many thanks for reading my post, a like or share would be amazing 🙂 xx

Making Memories at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash @KimTheBookworm @rararesources @BoldwoodBooks #NetGalley #fiction #romance #bookreview

I have been waiting an age to share my review for this book and today I finally can 🙂 here is my review of Making Memories at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash. This is the 3rd book in the Cornish Cove series and her latest book is another wonderful addition.

My huge thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on the Blog Tour and for arranging my copy from the publisher Boldwood Books.

It’s never too late…

After five husbands and five broken hearts, Lydia feels like she’s always been chasing something. But now she’s found her purpose, and having moved to Driftwood Bay to spend more time with her daughter Meredith, she’s happier than ever.

But there’s still life in these old bones yet! With her newfound sense of identity, she’s keen to re-explore the things that made her happy as a younger person. Lydia’s passion was dancing – she used to compete in her younger years, and there’s no place she’s more at home than on the dancefloor.

So when widower and antiques restorer Martin tells her about a big dance competition, she’s ready and raring to bring more joy into her life. But while making memories with Martin, the more she realises that both of their hearts need restoring too…

MY REVIEW

What another fabulous book in the Cornish Cove series this one is. Returning to some of the characters to catch up with things going on in their lives as well as learning more about them and newer characters is great.

This one focuses on Lydia, she is Meredith’s mum and they have reconnected after many years. There is a past that gradually emerges and it is a chance for pasts to be dealt with. Lydia is enjoying being in her 70s and she is a very capable lady who does not feel old and has plenty of things to look forward to. She is given the chance for some new opportunities and a chance to do something she thought she never would. She has been married before and she is deciding if she needs a relationship or if she is happy in her own company. Living in this community of Driftwood is a way of finding herself if you like.

Along with Lydia and Meredith, we have Clem and his Dad Martin, a new neighbour and the vocal and wonderful Vi. Everyone needs a Vi in their lives, and they probably know someone similar… I am saying nothing about who she occasionally reminds me of! I think this is wonderful about this author’s characters, they feel familiar and that is not just through reading the books in order, but that they do remind you of people you already know in everyday life. I think this is what makes this series so good and for me, it means the balance is right.

With new starts and fresh opportunities, things are going well, but there are some more serious aspects that the author brings in. This does leave a cloud over things and these are dealt with as any of us do in reality. We dwell and overthink and wonder about the what-ifs. Don’t think this means the book is down and moody because it never is, the author knows her characters too well to let them suffer in silence. They do live in a close-knit community after all.

There are some wonderful heartwarming moments in this book and I will admit to a tear or two at some scenes. This is a fabulous book and would work as a stand-alone, but reading in order helps with the continuing stories of what are becoming regulars. One for fans of heartwarming contemporary fiction and romance, with some very humorous moments and great characters. I would definitely recommend this book.

A Fresh Start at Wagging Tails Dogs’ Home by Sarah Hope #NetGalley @boldwoodbooks #romance #romcom #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today of A Fresh Start at Waggin Tails Dogs’ Home by Sarah Hope. This is a wonderful story and the 3rd in the series but it reads well as a stand-alone.

My huge thanks to Boldwood Books for accepting my request to review this title via NetGalley.

There’s no place like home… Although dog trainer Sally is relatively new to Wagging Tails, the team she works with have quickly become her family and the dogs her friends.

But when Andy, the one that got away, turns up for a brief respite from the city, she is at a crossroads. As tempting as a life with him is, she loves her home of West Par, and anyway, she has responsibilities here.

Number one on that list is ensuring the dogs’ home stays in business. A developer has been sniffing around wanting to buy the land, and the team is worried.

Sally will do anything to save her home and her friends’ livelihoods but the lure of reuniting with her lost love is strong. Is there a way for her to have both?

MY REVIEW

This is the 3rd book in the series and, as is often the case, the first one I have read. This is one of those books that has a wonderful feel and I have read other series that give that same sense of community.

The story is set around Wagging Tails Dogs’ Home, a rescue centre for pouches who are lost, found or needing some care. I will say the author obviously loves her doggy cast and she has definitely done her research into how this type of establishment is run. As a dog owner and dog lover this is impressive and also adds to the overall importance of the message behind the story.

The fields alongside the Dogs’ Home have been bought and Flora, the owner of the Dogs’ Home, is being pressured into selling up. Flora has run this home for many years and remembers all the dogs that have passed through her gates and gone on to be re-homed. Selling up is not an option for her.

Sally is one of those who work with Flora and she left her very different career to do what she loves and works with the dogs to train them and their owners. Let’s be honest here, it is often the owners that need training, our dog Billy has spent years training us so that we know when he is asking for a treat, to be let out or wants you to chase him around the garden because he has just pinched a sock! But on a serious note, the author does have some points to make about training.

Sally, sorry I got a little sidetracked… she has been working at the home and loves her life. A blast from her past suddenly comes back into the picture and she is in turmoil about it. She also has some news from home that rocks her.

The story ambles along at a wonderful pace, bringing in characters and other threads. All the time the author shows a sense of family and friendship. It is a story and a series that many fans of romance, rom-com and contemporary fiction will enjoy. It is light-hearted but with some serious things as well. Gorgeous story and one I would definitely recommend.

Many thanks for reading my post, a like or share would be amazing 🙂 xx

Finding Family at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash #romance #contemporaryfiction #romcom #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review of Finding Family at the Cornish Cove by Kim Nash. This is the 2nd book in the series and it is a wonderful book to cosy down to read.

For years, Gemma has been running her late mother’s café with devotion, and when an opportunity comes to buy out her next-door neighbour and expand, she jumps at the chance.

She knows she will do her mother proud – keep her legacy going strong – but deep down she knows there’s still something missing. But sometimes family are those you choose, or those who choose you!

With a growing community of supporters cheering Gemma on, will she really spend the rest of her life alone?

And with some new faces at her blossoming bistro, perhaps romance may also be on the cards?

MY REVIEW

What a delight it was to return to Driftwood Bay, this is the second book in the series and you could read it as a stand-alone as it works well. Having read the first book though, and loving it, I would suggest reading it as it was another gorgeous story.

Gemma has been running her Mum’s cafe after the death of her Mum. She has put a lot of hard work into it and it is time to make a new step forward. Gemma has been through a lot in the past and it is with some trepidation she decides to expand. Always in the back of her mind is the memory of her Mum and she often wonders what she would have thought of Gemma’s ideas.

There is a newcomer into the Bay and he has his own bag full of problems, they are not as straightforward or as obvious as you would first think. Then there is Lucy, Gemma’s sister who is also thinking of the future. Behind all of this is a secret that Gemma has been holding onto. Letting it out could be heartbreaking, but this is something she wants to keep to herself.

It was great to be able to reconnect with some of the characters from the first book, Clem and Meredith pop up regularly and add to the overall friendly feel of this gorgeous-sounding bay. gemma’s cafe sounds wonderful as does the new look extension.

This is a story from Gemma’s point of view, it is her story and brings up things from her past. She has not put them to rest and there are things that she does need to deal with, these sorts of things tend to arise at the most inconsiderate of moments. But it will give her the chance to meet them head-on, even though at the time she would rather avoid them.

I adore this author’s books, they are full of warmth and with this one, family is well and truly at the centre. There are various family issues from various sources and this made for interesting reading. I did kind of work out connections, but the lightness of the story made the reading enjoyable. If you are a fan of cosy family and romance novels with a few chuckles thrown in then this is one for you. Some great new characters that liven up the Bay. Looking forward to the next one and I would happily recommend this one.

Many thanks for reading my post, a like or share would be amazing 🙂 xx

MY REVIEW

What an absolute delight this story was from this author. Both my Mum and I are huge fans of Kim’s books and we are always eager to read her latest ones. As I was reading about Meredith’s move to Cornwall and how local handyman Clem was helping her with renovations, I was chuckling at some of the scenes and comments. What made this even more amusing was that I know when Mum reads this book she will be chuckling away the same as I did 🙂

Meredith has moved, from “up country” and is now down here in Cornwall (my neck of the woods). She has been spontaneous and bought a lighthouse, well this is what some people do when they have had the odd vino! I know I would love the idea of living in a lighthouse, but I also know that I would soon curse the steps! Meredith however is determined to make a go of this new home, which turns out to be more than she had bargained for when she actually arrives and realises just how much she will have to do just to get it clean.

While she comes to terms with what could be a disastrous decision she is given a lifeline in the form of Clem. He has been recommended to her by some of the friendlier locals to help with some of the renovations and repairs.

There are some great chuckle-worthy scenes in this story and they come from various characters. Meredith does have a memorable moment in the builder’s merchants that made me laugh, it is this sort of humour that I like. A bit risque, quirky and just good all-around banter. Every time the author seems to get the note just right in her novels and they add to the feel of the story.

There is a small community and this makes the characters easy to remember, and not all are welcoming and there is the odd one who is a bit smarmy. I do like the mix of characters and each has their own personality that shines through. Getting this across in a 270-page book is great.

Along with the howlers, there are some wonderful heartwarming moments. If you have read any of this author’s books before you will know there will be something a little more serious. Again, she does this so well in so few pages but the story never felt rushed. I just wanted the book to keep going if I am being completely honest.

This is another fabulous story about starting afresh and finding your feet when you are a little bit older but still young enough to enjoy and try new things. I haven’t even mentioned the romance in this story! This is a rom-com and so the romance is there, fleeting and tentative but sometimes it is better to be friends… isn’t it?

This is one for fans of contemporary fiction, romance, and finding a place that feels right. Another wonderful book and one I would definitely recommend.
