Why systematic skills management is indispensable today
In a working world that is changing ever faster due to digital transformation and artificial intelligence, classic teaching formats for building up "stockpiled knowledge" are no longer enough. People need to be empowered to master their future challenges in a self-organized way – they need the right values and competencies.
Lack of Transparency
Which values and competencies really determine the attitude and action ability of your employees? According to the 2025 Workday study, only 43% of German managers have a clear overview of their workforce's skills.
Lack of Success Measurement
How do values and competencies develop over time? Without systematic capture and diagnostics, you don't know how learning measures are working. The ROI of personnel development remains unclear.
Inefficient Learning Methods
Knowledge becomes outdated faster than ever. 90% of HR leaders cannot predict the skills needed for future challenges. Knowledge transfer "in stock" largely dissipates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most important questions about Valcom and skills management.
What are competencies?
Competencies are the abilities to act in a self-organized way in new, open, and complex situations. Unlike knowledge (information), qualifications (assessed abilities), and skills (individual proficiencies), competencies only ever become apparent in real action. They are developable – through experience, reflection, and targeted practical projects. Valcom is based on the scientific competency model of Erpenbeck & Sauter.
What is the difference between competency diagnostics and personality tests?
Personality tests (Big Five, MBTI, etc.) measure personality traits that are very hard to change – they show "this is who I am". Competency diagnostics measure developable action abilities – they show "this is how I act". The decisive difference: behavior = personality, action = competency. Valcom focuses on actions – not on relatively unchangeable personality traits.
What is workplace learning?
Workplace learning is learning on the job – as opposed to learning in a seminar. In next-generation workplace learning, working and learning merge: knowledge is no longer conveyed "in stock", but provided as needed within the work process and applied immediately in dialogue with the AI learning partner.
How does self-organized learning on the job work?
With Valcom and the AI learning partner VIA, employees shape their learning processes in a self-organized way. Based on the values and competency diagnostics, VIA recommends individual learning goals, suitable practical projects and tasks, social learning, learning support, and training measures. The result: no transfer problem, because new knowledge is applied immediately. Throughout the self-organized learning process, VIA is permanently available as a learning partner.
What is skills management software?
Skills management software is a digital solution for the systematic capture, analysis, and development of values and competencies. Valcom enables AI-supported profile creation, self-assessments and 360° feedback, visualization of skill gaps through radar charts and tables, analysis with AI advisors, and AI-supported development recommendations.
How many values and competencies can Valcom capture?
Valcom is based on an extensive, scientifically validated soft skills library of around 390 terms – soft skills, i.e. values and competencies. Each term contains definitions, action anchors, exaggerations, descriptions, and recommendations for practical tasks, learning support, and training measures. The taxonomy was developed by Prof. Dr. Werner Sauter.
Is Valcom GDPR-compliant?
Yes, Valcom is fully GDPR-compliant. All data is hosted and processed on servers in Germany. The platform meets all requirements for data protection and data security for European companies.
What company size is Valcom suitable for?
Valcom is suitable for companies with around 50 employees or more. This development space scales flexibly with your company – from mid-sized businesses to large enterprises. Particularly suitable for HR departments, personnel development, and leadership development.
What does Valcom cost?
Pricing is per user on a monthly basis, with a tiered scale depending on the number of users. Contact us for an individual quote.
What is the difference between Valcom and VIA?
Valcom is the diagnostics platform: skills diagnostics, analysis, AI-supported results interpretation, and development recommendations – for HR developers and managers. VIA (Valcom Intelligent Agent) is the development platform: it turns the Valcom recommendation into action – with dialogue-based AI learning, practical projects, and competency development directly on the job. Valcom diagnoses. VIA develops.
Which competency areas does Valcom cover?
Valcom is based on 4 scientifically validated competency areas according to the Erpenbeck & Sauter competency model: personal competencies (personal responsibility, self-organization...), activity competencies (consistency, initiative...), social competencies (collaboration, teamwork), and methodological competencies (experience-oriented, expertise...). Within these areas, around 390 soft skills and value terms are fully elaborated.
What is the scientific foundation of Valcom?
Valcom uses the Erpenbeck & Sauter competency model – a further development of the scientific foundation by Prof. John Erpenbeck and Prof. Volker Heyse, adapted to the new possibilities of artificial intelligence. The model defines competencies as self-organization dispositions. The basic structure with 4 competency areas remains, but is more flexible: Valcom works with 16 competency fields and enables an extended, customizable use of competency terms.
Can Valcom also capture hard skills?
Yes, Valcom also captures hard skills – that is, abilities, qualifications, and knowledge. Soft skills are at the forefront for us, but hard skills form an important basis: knowledge is a necessary prerequisite for competency development. Without the necessary expertise, you cannot develop competencies. That is why we also derive hard skills from the requirements and can capture and evaluate them.
What does learning culture have to do with competency development?
Self-organized learning on the job can only be successfully implemented within a supportive learning culture. Valcom also captures learning culture, learning motivation, and the motivation for self-organized learning. The results help companies identify obstacles to self-organized learning and improve the learning culture in a targeted way. At the same time, they feed into the individual AI-supported development recommendations – making learning more efficient and enabling employees to develop themselves in the area of learning as well.
Can I integrate Valcom with other HR systems?
Yes, Valcom offers a REST API for integration. We are open to connecting with various HR management solutions and are happy to discuss the effort involved and your requirements in a personal conversation.
What is the difference between skills management and competency management?
Skills management and competency management are often used synonymously. Skills management encompasses the diagnostics of values and competencies with the derivation of hard skills, while competency management focuses on the targeted development of action ability. Valcom is a comprehensive skills diagnostics that covers all areas.
How does 360-degree feedback work in Valcom?
360-degree feedback enables a comprehensive competency and values assessment from various perspectives: self-assessment, feedback from supervisors, colleagues, and optionally external assessors. The results are visualized as a radar chart and in table form, and complemented by an AI-supported analysis.
What is a skill gap and how does Valcom help with it?
A skill gap is the difference between existing competencies (actual profile) and required competencies (target profile). Valcom automatically visualizes skill gaps, prioritizes development needs, and helps plan targeted development measures with practical tasks and projects.
How does Valcom differ from other skills management and competency diagnostics tools?
Valcom differs in two key respects: First, through its clear focus on soft skills – with around 390 scientifically validated competencies from Prof. Dr. Werner Sauter and a consistent orientation toward targeted skills development in practical projects and tasks rather than mere knowledge transfer. Second, through its scalability and broad applicability: while most diagnostics tools require specialized consultants for every assessment, Valcom puts the users at the center – every employee can independently create profiles, conduct assessments, and use AI-supported analyses at any time.
How are soft skills assessed in Valcom?
Soft skills and values are assessed in Valcom on a scale of 1 to 9. Each competency and value is backed by a clear definition, concrete action anchors, and an exaggeration that enable a precise and comparable assessment. In addition, abilities, qualifications, and knowledge can also be captured. The assessment is carried out through self-assessment and optionally through 360-degree feedback.
Can Valcom be used for leadership development?
Yes, Valcom is particularly well suited for leadership development. The taxonomy contains comprehensive leadership competencies such as delegation ability, employee motivation, change management, and strategic thinking. In combination with VIA, Valcom enables continuous leadership coaching.
Is there a free trial version of Valcom?
Yes, you can get to know Valcom with no obligation. Arrange a free consultation in which we will demonstrate the platform live and address your specific requirements. You can then test Valcom in a pilot project.
How secure is my data in Valcom?
Valcom takes data security very seriously: all data is transmitted encrypted (SSL/TLS) and stored on ISO 27001-certified servers in Germany. The platform is fully GDPR-compliant with detailed access control, audit logs, and regular security audits.
How does Valcom capture values at different levels?
Valcom captures values at three levels: individual, team level, and organizational level. At the individual level, personal values are captured through self-assessment. At the team and organizational level, Valcom enables the capture of actual values and desired values – from which it can be derived which values are currently lived and which should be prioritized in the future. These desired values form the basis for target profiles and targeted values development. For sensitive topics such as values, Valcom offers the option of anonymized capture.
Why are values so important for competency development?
As the organizers of self-organized action, values are the cores of competencies – they give employees motivation and orientation. Without internalized values, competencies often remain superficial. In workplace learning, values form the inner compass: they guide decisions and develop not through directives, but through reflected experiences. Valcom makes values transparent and enables targeted values development at all levels – from individual attitude to corporate culture.
How do I create a competency model for my company?
With Valcom, you create company-, team-, or function-specific competency models in just a few steps: based on information about your company, your roles, and requirements, the AI generates personalized competency profiles – based on our library of around 390 scientifically validated soft skills. The result is target profiles that serve as a benchmark for assessments and development planning. Existing competency models of your company can optionally be integrated as well.
How do I measure the success of competency development?
Valcom enables success measurement on several levels: through regular assessments, you track the development of individual competencies over time. The target-actual comparison shows how skill gaps are closing. At the team and organizational level, you can identify development trends and measure the progress of development programs. The AI-supported analysis provides concrete recommendations for action for the next steps.
Is Valcom suitable for Swiss companies?
Yes, Valcom is ideally suited for Swiss companies. The platform is both GDPR-compliant and compliant with the Swiss Data Protection Act (DSG). Our Swiss branch (oneclick AG) in Zürich serves customers from Switzerland. The user interface is available in German, English and French.
