I'm still behind on Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, Fringe, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Men of a Certain Age and I've never even seen Big Love, Treme, Sons of Anarchy or True Blood yet. Emmyworthy 2010 - The Comedies

Alright, the Emmy nominations will be announced next week, July 7th, and while I have absolutely no sway in them (I almost have an anti-sway with these things. If I want them to be nominated, it'll almost mean for sure they'll never get nominated), here's my personal picks (WORTHY) and my predictions for who WILL be actually nominated (*). (For better predictions, check out Joe's Low Resolution, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4)

I'm starting off with the Comedy categories today. (Dramas here)

BEST COMEDY SERIES
Worthy - My Picks

Community
Cougar Town
Glee *
Modern Family *
Parks & Recreation
Ugly Betty

Worthy Alternatives

Better Off Ted
Nurse Jackie
30 Rock *
United States of Tara

Alternatives

The Big Bang Theory *
Bored to Death
Californication
Chuck
Curb Your Enthusiasm *
Desperate Housewives
Entourage
How I Met Your Mother
How To Make it In America
Monk
The Office *
Two and a Half Men
Weeds

Well, there's no shortage of comedies to pick from this year, which is making competition difficult again. Where once Two and a Half Men easily won a slot, now there's many better alternatives that actually have decent ratings.

I'm still not even sure if United States of Tara or Nurse Jackie even belong in the comedy section or not, but it ends up making me leave off faves like The Big Bang Theory and Bored to Death who might have made my top picks in previous years. Still, I think the Emmy will stay with some of their favorite standby's like Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office (which I still do love, but not as much as I did during it's earlier and stronger seasons). Meanwhile, Weeds and Entourage are only shadows of their former selves.

I also enjoyed How To Make It In America but it's not quite there yet.

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Worthy- My Picks

Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock *
John Corbett - United States of Tara
Jay Harrington - Better Off Ted
Joel McHale - Community
Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory *
Jason Schwartzman - Bored to Death

Worthy Alternatives

Johnny Galecki - The Big Bang Theory
Matthew Morrison - Glee
Kevin Connolly - Entourage

Alternatives

Steve Carrell - The Office *
Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiasm *
David Duchovny - Californication *
Bryan Greenberg - How To Make It In America
Zachary Levi - Chuck
Josh Radnor - How I Met Your Mother
Tony Shalhoub - Monk *
Charlie Sheen - Two and a Half Men

Strangely, this might the weakest category because many of this years strong comedies are ensembles with most of the cast being considered supporting (from what I know). I have a penchant for fresher choices hence why almost no one I want to be nominated is actually going to be seriously considered. I'm also keeping Kevin Connolly as an alternative because I still think he's the heart and soul of the show and makes whatever still works on the show, work.

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Worthy - My Picks

Toni Collette - United States of Tara *
Courtney Cox - Cougar Town *
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie *
America Ferrera - Ugly Betty
Tina Fey - 30 Rock *
Amy Poehler - Parks & Recreation *

Worthy Alternatives

Marcia Cross - Desperate Housewives
Kaley Cuoco - The Big Bang Theory
Julia-Louise Dreyfus - The New Adventures of Old Christine *
Patricia Heaton - The Middle
Felicity Huffman - Desperate Housewives
Lea Michelle - Glee
Eva Longoria Parker - Desperate Housewives
Mary-Louise Parker - Weeds

Alternatives

Teri Hatcher - Desperate Housewives

Honestly, anybody can be nominated here and I'll be happy. There's such a strong group of female leads in a comedy that even the ones on shows passed their due date are still worthy for being terrific on a less than terrific show.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Worthy - My Picks

Ty Burrell - Modern Family *
Jesse Tyler Ferguson - Modern Family
Nick Offerman - Parks & Recreation
Ed O'Neill - Modern Family *
Neil Patrick Harris - How I Met Your Mother *
Eric Stonestreet - Modern Family *

Worthy Alternatives

Aziz Ansari - Parks & Recreation
Dan Byrd - Cougar Town
Chevy Chase - Community
Chris Colfer - Glee
Ted Danson - Bored to Death
Peter Facinelli - Nurse Jackie
Jerry Ferrara - Entourage
Zach Galifianakis - Bored to Death
Keir Gilchrist - United States of Tara
Donald Glover - Community
Ian Gomez - Cougar Town
Nolan Gould - Modern Family
Clark Gregg - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Simon Helberg - The Big Bang Theory
Josh Hopkins - Cougar Town
Justin Kirk - Weeds
Hamish Linklater - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Jack McBrayer - 30 Rock
Charlie McDermott - The Middle
Kunal Nayyar - The Big Bang Theory
Chris Pratt - Parks & Recreation
Dani Pudi - Community
Jim Rash - Community
Rico Rodriguez - Modern Family
Atticus Shaffer - The Middle
Jonathan Slavin - Better Off Ted
Eddie Kaye Thomas - How To Make it In America
Michael Urie - Ugly Betty
Brian Van Holt - Cougar Town

Alternatives

Jon Cryer - Two and A Half Men *
Kevin Dillon - Entourage
Dominic Fumasa - Nurse Jackie
Mark Indelicato - Ugly Betty
Luis Guzmán - How To Make It In America
Ken Jeong - Community
John Krasinski - The Office
Eric Mabius - Ugly Betty
Kevin McHale - Glee
Cory Monteith - Glee
Tracy Morgan - 30 Rock
Jeremy Piven - Entourage
Tony Plana - Ugly Betty
Victor Rasuk - How To Make It In America
Mark Salling - Glee
Jason Segel - How I Met Your Mother
Paul Schulze - Nurse Jackie
Stephen Wallem - Nurse Jackie
Rainn Wilson - The Office *

Because the cast of Modern Family has decide to submit themselves ALL as supporting, it starts filling up this already crowded category fast. In addition, there's such a strong contingent of really great young actors, I would almost want a new category just for the young kids (including Keir Gilchrist, Rico Rodiguez, Nolan Gould, Atticus Shaffer, Charlie McDermott, Dan Byrd, and Alexander Gould from Weeds). Of course, what the above shows is that they really should have an ensemble award, especially nowadays with shows becoming ensemble pieces more than ever.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Worthy - My Picks

Julie Bowen - Modern Family *
Jane Lynch - Glee *
Ana Ortiz - Ugly Betty
Sofia Vergara - Modern Family *
Merritt Wever - Nurse Jackie
Vanessa Williams - Ugly Betty

Worthy Alternatives

Andrea Anders - Better Off Ted
Eve Best - Nurse Jackie
Alison Brie - Community
Yvette Nicole Brown - Community
Portia de Rossi - Better Off Ted
Rosemarie DeWitt - United States of Tara
Cheryl Hines - Curb Your Enthusiasm *
Sarah Hyland - Modern Family
Jane Krakowski - 30 Rock
Brie Larson - United States of Tara
Judith Light - Ugly Betty
Becki Newton - Ugly Betty
Elizabeth Perkins - Weeds
Busy Philipps - Cougar Town
Aubrey Plaza - Parks & Recreation
Eden Sher - The Middle
Wanda Sykes - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Kristen Wiig - Saturday Night Live *
Ariel Winter - Modern Family

Alternatives

Dianna Agron - Glee
Lake Bell - How To Make It In America
Conchata Ferrell - Two and a Half Men
Jenna Fischer - The Office
Alyson Hannigan - How I Met Your Mother
Alex Kapp Horner - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Gillian Jacobs - Community
Rashida Jones - Parks & Recreation
Jayma Mays - Glee
Christa Miller - Cougar Town
Tricia O'Kelley - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Amber Riley - Glee
Emily Rutherfurd - The New Adventures of Old Christine
Anna Deavere Smith - Nurse Jackie
Cobie Smulders - How I Met Your Mother
Holland Taylor - Two and a Half Men *

Another category with tons of worthy choices, not helped by the "ensembles" like Modern Family that are really putting leads into the supporting category (and thus pushing out worthy youngsters like the younger MF set Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter, who could with Eden Sher and Brie Larson, also create a young persons category.

Also doesn't help with Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara floating between dark comedy and drama and taking a spot here. All worthy, just hard to categorize, and strong performances either way.

I'm gonna do the guest categories together with drama on another day.

Emmyworthy 2009

Alright, here's my predictions to win (*) and who I think should win (!). Though I haven't seen In Treatment, and I'm still catching up with Dexter and Breaking Bad so I'm not caught up to the latest seasons, and I have yet to catch the latest season of Damages too.

BEST COMEDY SERIES
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock
*WILL WIN/!SHOULD WIN
Weeds

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory *WILL WIN/!SHOULD WIN
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
Toni Collette, United States of Tara !SHOULD WIN
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine
Tina Fey, 30 Rock *WILL WIN
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program

Typically, I would roll my eyes at the role of Tara which seems written with the line, "And will be awarded the Emmy". However, Toni Collette validated that.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Kevin Dillon, Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother *WILL WIN/!SHOULD WIN
Jack McBrayer, 30 Rock
Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock
Rainn Wilson, The Office

He's even fricken hosting the show. Just give it to him already, damnit.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds !SHOULD WIN
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live *WILL WIN
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty

Hardest category to pick, as I'm pretty much okay with all these ladies. And who said there weren't good roles for women?

BEST DRAMA SERIES
Big Love
Breaking Bad
Damages
Dexter
House

Lost !SHOULD WIN
Mad Men *WILL WIN

Mad Men was beautiful but Lost made me pumped every single time, whether with excitement or fury or complete dumbfoundness, but it always kept my blood moving.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Simon Baker, The Mentalist
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men *WILL WIN/!SHOULD WIN
Hugh Laurie, House

Glenn Close, Damages *WILL WIN
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men !SHOULD WIN
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Moss is really the heart of Mad Men

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Christian Clemenson, Boston Legal
Michael Emerson, Lost !SHOULD WIN
William Hurt, Damages
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
William Shatner, Boston Legal
John Slattery, Mad Men *WILL WIN

I'd be happy here with anybody not from Boston Legal

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Rose Byrne, Damages
Hope Davis, In Treatment
Cherry Jones, 24
Sandra Oh, Grey’s Anatomy
Dianne Wiest, In Treatment *WILL WIN
Chandra Wilson, Grey’s Anatomy

Usually I'd give it to Chandra or Sandra but they really didn't have much to work with this year and had better years, the rest I haven't seen yet. Though since I thought Byrne was pretty excellent in S1, I'd probably lean towards her.

REALITY COMPETITION PROGRAM
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing With The Stars
Project Runway

Top Chef *WILL WIN/!SHOULD WIN

I think stomachs will finally prevail and stop TAR's winning streak.

The Emmy Nominations, Not As Groanworthy As Usual

Emmy nominations came out this morning and with all the extra nominations (6 picks for a lot of categories, 7 picks for Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series), they STILL left off some favorites (that I knew would never get recognized in the big categories) like Friday Night Lights, Pushing Daisies, Privileged but on the other hand, so did the "regulars" (Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, 24). All in all, not a horrible list this year, although Boston Legal (which I did like) STILL got nominations for William Shatner and Christian Clemenson (which I did not want to happen anymore). On the other hand, Justin Timberlake is now an Emmy nominated ACTOR? WOW! Who would have though back when N'Sync was still big.

Oh, and what will it take to get So You Think You Can Dance nominated in Best Reality Competition or Reality Host for Cat Deely? Sheesh. You think for taking 4 of the 6 slots in Best Choreography, it would beat Dancing with the Stars in the bigger categories.

OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY
81st Annual Academy Awards • Musicals Are Back
Rob Ashford, Choreographer
Dancing With The Stars • Jive / Great Balls of Fire
Derek Hough, Choreographer
Julianne Hough, Choreographer
So You Think You Can Dance • Bleeding Love *
Tabitha D'umo, Choreographer
Napoleon D'umo, Choreographer
So You Think You Can Dance • Mercy
Mia Michaels, Choreographer
So You Think You Can Dance • Adam and Eve / Silence
Tyce Diorio, Choreographer
So You Think You Can Dance • A Los Amigos
Dmitry Chaplin, Choreographer

Dmitri Chaplin is nominated for an EMMY!!! Mia Michaels obviously. Yay for Nappytabs on what is my favorite dacne from last season. But Tyce Diorio? Really? (Which one was that one again?)

Here are the Emmy nominations and any reactions I may have had:
* Who I Want to Win

COMEDY

BEST COMEDY SERIES

Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
How I Met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock *
Weeds

I never got Flight of the Conchords or Family Guy and I think Entourage and Weeds have lost a bit of their initial spark (though Entourage more than Weeds) but I'm happy for How I Met Your Mother and The Office even though both didn't have THEIR greatest season either. Only 30 Rock was consistently funny. I still say Ugly Betty is funny (especially the last batch of episodes this past season) though most people have written it off now, and I would have rather seen The United States of Tara and Pushing Daisies up there but I knew those were long shots.

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory *
Tony Shalhoub, Monk
Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men

Tony Shalhoub? Charlie Sheen? Groan. Again, I just don't find FOtC that funny so whatev. It's down between Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons and while I'm sure Alec could eat Jim alive, I think this has been Jim's year.

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
Toni Collette, United States of Tara *
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds
Sarah Silverman, The Sarah Silverman Program

Even though I didn't think Samantha Who? was funny this year, I still thought Applegate held up the show based on sheer charm and lunacy. YAY COLLETTE though I thought there was NO WAY she could NOT have been nominated for that show (now if only the rest of her cast can get recognized). Personally I would have put JoAnna Garcia up there for Privileged but I knew that was NEVER gonna happen.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Kevin Dillon, Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother *
Jack McBrayer, 30 Rock
Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock
Rainn Wilson, The Office

NPH FTW!!! Chi McBride from Pushing Daisies is missing from the list. As is Keir Gilchrist from The United States of Tara. But I knew Gilchrist was a LONGSHOT just cause he's still a kid. And Michael Urie really should be up there too. But ah, they do love those "guy" shows don't they? The girly shows never get the respect do they?

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies *
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds
Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Vanessa Williams, Ugly Betty

Well at least Williams and Chenowith got some love here. I really can't complain about this category actually.

GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alan Alda, 30 Rock
Beau Bridges, Desperate Housewives
Jon Hamm, 30 Rock
Steve Martin, 30 Rock
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live *

AH, the JT nomination! And apparently if you cast Jon Hamm in your show, you will get nominated big, no?

GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Jennifer Aniston, 30 Rock
Christine Baranski, The Big Bang Theory
Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live *
Gena Rowlands, Monk
Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock
Betty White, My Name Is Earl

Another great category. Fey? Anitston? White? Stritch? Baranski? Wow!

DRAMA

BEST DRAMA SERIES

Big Love
Breaking Bad
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost *
Mad Men

Okay, so this reads more like a list of the shows still on my list to watch, but I'm getting through Dexter right now (though haven't caught up to the latest season) and Big Love and Breaking Bad are still sitting right there to be next on the playlist. I've partially dropped House as regular viewing now because it was starting to get repetitive and I couldn't deal with it just to get to the inbetween character stuff anymore. I still haven't caught up with Damages season 2 (I recorded them all but waiting to do it in a marathon) yet but if it's like the first season, I can't wait! Still love Mad Men but Lost has just been spectacular, even if I don't understand anything that is going on anymore.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Simon Baker, The Mentalist *
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

Yah, I said it. I want Simon Baker to win. While the show is fun and clever, it's not genius or anything but Baker's performance lifts it to remarkable levels with his Sherlock Holmesian on an upper take of his lead character. Never gonna happen since his nomination will be the award itself but nice to see they saw beyond the pretty face.

BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Glenn Close, Damages *
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

Glenn Close just scares me. My default win would be for Moss who I think is the soul of her show.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Christian Clemenson, Boston Legal
Michael Emerson, Lost *
William Hurt, Damages
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
William Shatner, Boston Legal
John Slattery, Mad Men

I enjoy my Boston Legal but SERIOUSLY? Groan.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Rose Byrne, Damages *
Hope Davis, In Treatment
Cherry Jones, In Treatment
Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
Dianne Wiest, In Treatment
Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy

I really need to start watching In Treatment don't I?

GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Edward Asner, CSI: NY
Ted Danson, Damages *
Ernest Borgnine, ER
Michael J. Fox, Rescue Me
Jimmy Smits, Dexter

Or maybe Michael J. Fox.

GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Brenda Blethyn, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Carol Burnett, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Ellen Burstyn, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Sharon Lawrence, Grey's Anatomy
CCH Pounder, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency *

So is L&O:SVU the 30 Rock of guest stars? I'm going with Pounder even though I haven't seen her in that show, just cause she friggin deserves an Emmy by now.

REALITY

REALITY COMPETITION PROGRAM

The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing With The Stars
Project Runway
Top Chef *

Well, with the absence of SYTYCD, and the fact that TAR always wins, I'll share the wealth over to Top Chef, my latest obsession.

HOST FOR A REALITY OR REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars
Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race *
Heidi Klum, Project Runway
Padma Lakshmi (Host) and Tom Colicchio (Co-Host), Top Chef
Jeff Probst, Survivor
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol

Lakshmi and Colicchio and Klum and Probst are good. I'll give you that. But no one beats Keoghan's brow. (Since we can't count Cat Deely into the mix)

REALITY SERIES
Antiques Roadshow
Dirty Jobs *
Dog Whisperer
Intervention
Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List
MythBusters

Love Kathy but Mike Rowe actually has to do those dirty jobs and seems like he's cool with it. I'm willing to spread some Emmy love just for his attitude alone.

VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY

VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES

The Colbert Report
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart *
Late Show With David Letterman
Real Time With Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

I feel it has been more Colbert's year but I think I still prefer Jon Stewart overall. SNL is still too imbalanced for me.

VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SPECIAL
Will Ferrell: You're Welcome America. A Final Night With George W. Bush
Ricky Gervais: Out of England
Kathy Griffin: She'll Cut a Bitch
The Kennedy Center Honors
Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger

Since I only saw Will Ferrell's show, and I think I laughed twice the whole time, I'm going to assume Gervais, Griffin and Rock were far funnier, an assumption I could have made anyways without watching any of these choices.

MINISERIES OR MOVIE

MINISERIES

Generation Kill
Little Dorrit

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE
Coco Chanel
Grey Gardens
Into The Storm
Prayers For Bobby *
Taking Chance

Only saw Prayers For Bobby but it affectively made me cry. So it worked. I've heard Grey Gardens is great but more for the performances.

ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE
Kevin Bacon, Taking Chance
Kenneth Branagh, Wallander: One Step Behind
Kevin Kline, Cyrano de Bergerac (Great Performances)
Brendan Gleeson, Into the Storm
Sir Ian McKellen, King Lear (Great Performances)
Kiefer Sutherland, 24: Redemption

Just based on star quality, I'd love Gleeson, McKellen or Branagh to win.

ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE
Drew Barrymore, Grey Gardens
Jessica Lange, Grey Gardens
Shirley MacLaine, Coco Chanel
Sigourney Weaver, Prayers For Bobby
Chandra Wilson, Accidental Friendship

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Len Cariou, Into the Storm
Tom Courtenay, Little Dorrit
Ken Howard, Grey Gardens
Bob Newhart, The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice
Andy Serkis, Little Dorrit

Andy Serkis??!!! What is this movie? Why have I never heard of it?

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Shohreh Aghdashloo, House Of Saddam
Marcia Gay Harden, The Courageous Heart Of Irena Sendler (Hallmark Hall Of Fame Presentation)
Janet McTeer, Into The Storm
Jeanne Tripplehorn, Grey Gardens
Cicely Tyson, Relative Stranger

Harden and McTeer in battle AGAIN? McTeer must want to stab Harden's heart this time around. NPH can referee again.

The Underdogs Finally Prevail!

Vance at http://tapeworthy.blogspot.com:

The Golden Globes Awards were on. Yay. (Finger in the air in circles)

Okay. I actually do love them but considering everyone else is live blogging the damn thing, I can't be bothered.

But considering the awards show got a LOT right (or at least acceptable), AND there were a lot of funny speeches and intro (The best: Ricky Gervais, runners up: Anybody from 30 Rock including Tracy Jordan, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin), it was a good year.

Yays on Kate Winslet winning everything! To make up for losing at the Oscars every damn time. Meryl eat your heart out. Also, yay for looking so smokin' hot! Eat your heart out James Cameron.

Yay for Colin Farrell. He may be a bad boy but he sounds SOOO good in his native Irish accent. (I just thought of something very dirty with the words lick and Irish Cream but I won't say it. I think I'll go have some Bailey's now...)

Yay for the Slumdog Millionaire sweep! Dev Patel and Freida Pinto looked SOOOO cute on the red carpet! Yay to Danny Boyle! The composer! Simon Beaufoy! And for now being the official front runner to the Oscars! I feel like doing a Bollywood dance now!

Yay for newcomer Sally Hawkins and for showing that not everybody has a stylist still.

Yay for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I liked In Bruges more but I'm happy with this choice.

Yay for Jenna Fischer who looked positively HOT!

No huge surprises but Yay for Mad Men, Wall*E and Heath Ledger.

As for the boos:

Boos to Renee Zellweger for her dress and her hair. WTF was that? Sally Hawkins is an unknown actress from England and has an excuse. You can afford it ReyRey, and you have no excuse. (And what's with that new Alaskan movie you're doing with Harry Connick Jr. anyways? Lame).

Boos to The Wrestler for Bruce Springsteen's song (not Mickey Rourke's Best Actor award. Everyone loves a comeback!). Another Springsteen song? Really? Because it sounds so different than the last bunch of songs he did for movies? I once loved Brucie but now it all sounds the same.

Boos to Laura Dern in her cartoonish performance in Recount. The rest of the cast was awesome but really? For Laura?

Boo to Will Arnet who looked positively bored when Heath Ledger won and they started slowly giving him the obligatory standing ovation. Love you Arnet but at least fake some sympathy.

Boo to Jeremy Piven for showing up. I thought you were sick?

Really? to Anna Paquin? Was she that good in True Blood?

Really to Waltz With Bashr? The concept was neat and the animation was incredible but it was SOOO self-involved and contrived and the movie would have been so much more powerful if the narrator didn't drone on and on about himself and his dreams all in an effort to "remember".

Gabriel Byrne huh? really?

And so much for John Adams? I mean, I love Laura Linney, Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson but another one for someone in a Mini-series over Neil Patrick Harris in How I Met Your Mother? I'm sick of this sh#t.

But okay okay... generally it was a pretty good night.

I think I'll go do that basketball dance now.

And The Golden Globes Go To ... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

The Hollywood Foreign Press announced their Golden Globe nominations and they must be getting as old as the Emmy and Oscar nominators. Usually the Globes can be counted on for some fresh picks but this year the choices are pretty straight-laced and staid. Especially since all the critics awards are pouring out and the love seems to be spreading all over for outside-the-box fare (listed all at the bottom).

Here's the main Golden Globe nominations:

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Revolutionary Road
Slumdog Millionaire

Milk missed the cut. Then again, so did Doubt. I've only seen the under-Slumdog Millionaire and glad the little indie movie made the cut. Oh wait, The Dark Knight didn't make the cut either. Ouch.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary Road
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Mickey Rourke? Sean Penn? Frank Langella? What is this? The 80's? Okay, but this was the predicted list so no huge surprises. Though no Richard Jenkins? I was hoping for that breakthrough. Or even Dev Patel. That would have been awesome.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kristin Scott-Thomas, I've Loved You So Long
Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road

Yay for Hathaway and Kristin! Meanwhile Streep competes with new-Streep Winslet. Oh wait, what happened to Cate Blanchett? for Jolie too?

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Burn After Reading
Happy-Go-Lucky
In Bruges
Mamma Mia!
Vicky Cristina Barcelona

What, no High School Musical 3? I really hoped WALL*E would make the grown up tables category, especially when the it's-not-actually-made-well-but-fun-cause-it's-Abba Mamma Mia got in.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Javier Bardem, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Colin Farrell, In Bruges
James Franco, Pineapple Express
Brendan Gleeson, In Bruges
Dustin Hoffman, Last Chance Harvey

Yay Bardem!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Rebecca Hall, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
Frances McDormand, Burn After Reading
Meryl Streep, Mamma Mia!
Emma Thompson, Last Chance Harvey

Yay Rebecca Hall!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
Tom Cruise, Tropic Thunder
Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder
Ralph Fiennes, The Duchess
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight

Okay, Tom Cruise was very funny in Tropic Thunder. I guess he's the gay to replace all the Milk guys?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
Amy Adams, Doubt
Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis, Doubt
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
Kate Winslet, The Reader

Solid group with another one for Winslet! And yay for Viola Davis! Too bad she bumps out Taraji P. Henson for the Black Actress spot. Heavens forbid there be two.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Stephen Daldry, The Reader
David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
Sam Mendes, Revolutionary Road

Guess they are doing a complete shut-out for The Dark Knight (except for Heath) and Milk (except for Penn)

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
Bolt
Kung Fu Panda
WALL-E

I didn't love Waltz with Bashir but it seems to be this years "smart" animated movie pick but I guess people know Kung Fu Panda more. (Granted, I actually liked it)

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
Dexter, Showtime
House, Fox
In Treatment, HBO
Mad Men, AMC
True Blood, HBO

Should I be surprised that The Wire and Friday Night Lights get shut out again? But for House? Yah, it had a great resurgence this year but then fell back to its old (boring) ways. And how is Lost which had the best year ever be completely shut out? I'm all for supporting the cable networks but just because it's on cable, doesn't mean it's automatically the best thing on TV.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY
30 Rock, NBC
Californication, Showtime
Entourage, HBO
The Office, NBC
Weeds, Showtime

Should I be surprised that Pushing Daisies, How I Met Your Mother, The New Adventures of Old Christine or The Big Bang Theory were shut out for cable fare? Am I the only one not that impressed with Californication? And while I love Entourage, it did not have a great year.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, The Tudors

If Kyle Chandler could be squeezed in, I would be okay with this. Well, Laurie is getting old news but on the other hand, he's the main reason FOR the show at this point.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
January Jones, Mad Men
Anna Paquin, True Blood
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

If Connie Britton could replace Sedgwick, I would be okay with this. Well, maybe Hargitay needs a break here. But yay January Jones!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Kevin Connolly, Entourage
David Duchovny, Californication
Tony Shalhoub, Monk

Yay Connolly! He's totally the heart of Entourage and never given the credit. Boo Shalhoub. Monk is still ON? Where's Jim Parsons? Jeffrey Donovan? Lee Pace?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Debra Messing, The Starter Wife
Mary Louise-Parker, Weeds

Applegate yes. Ferrera yes. Fey yes. Louise-Parke yes. Messing maybe. I actually like her in The Starter Wife but the role is a bit self indulgent from producer... Debra Messing...

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Eileen Atkins, Cranford
Laura Dern, Recount
Melissa George, In Treatment
Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters
Dianne Wiest, In Treatment

I always hate these categories that combine the Mini-Series and Made-for-TV-Movies with regular series and even then, Laura Dern? Her performance in Recount was comically cartoonish and over the top. Where's Becky Newton? Vanessa Williams? Sandra Oh? Adrianne Padelecki? Wanda Sykes? Yunjin Kim? Elisabeth Moss? Kristin Chenowith?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Denis Leary, Recount
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Blair Underwood, In Treatment
Tom Wilkinson, John Adams

Where's Mark Urie? Clark Gregg? Hamish Linklater? Gaius Charles? Zach Gilford? Terry O'Quinn? John Slattery? Chi McBride?

The Woes (and Whoa's) of The Emmy's

Well, my rocky relationship with Emmy continues.

Jeremy Piven? AGAIN? (for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy).

Here's some other random thoughts I had while watching The Emmy's beyond the obvious... what the hell were the 5 hosts doing? Did someone else other than me just want to save Heidi Klum from the whole disaster?

And who would have thought Josh Groban would probably be one of the (intentionally) funniest things on the telecast?

I know I'm going to be alone on this one but Zeljko Ivanek (who deservedly won Best Supporting Actor in A Drama for Damages) is kinda sexy in that elder gentleman way. It's obvious for John Slattery but I've NEVER seen Ivanek that way (usually cause he scares the bejeezus out of me in his nefarious roles) but he seems pretty loose and cool as himself.

Love the 2 dimensional looking 3D sets!

Ricky Gervais's little intro, and stealing back his Emmy from Steve Carrell was actually funny.

I still love when the nominees for Outstanding Writing on a Variety, Music or Comedy Program are read. Though I think I laughed loudest when they panned back to show Conan in bed with Angelina and all their writer kids. The wii thing was clever though.

Steve Martin is still hilarious. (I believe that L.A. Story is under-appreciated gem).

I've always loved Josh Groban but I love it even more that he has a pretty good sense of a humour, and his rendition of 30 famous TV theme songs was hilarious and fantastic. Who knew he could actually sing in other styles? Josh Groban haters really have no reason to. Cause that was just brilliant. I'm not sure what was funnier, the Friends portion, the South Park portion, or The Muppet Show portion (which sadly we didn't see his face doing). Or maybe Cops? Or The Fresh Prince of Bel Air?

Was it me or did David Boreanaz looked pissed off that he had to present with Lauren "LC" Conrad? And to introduce already announced guest actors and actresses winners from last weeks creative Emmy's no less.

Is it a telling sign of the state of America that the producer of John Adams was cut off from his speech about articulate and intelligent leaders with a promo of the upcoming Best Reality Show award nominees?

As uncomfortable as Heidi Klum has been looking all night as she's had to hang with the boys, her and Tom Bergeron seem to be fairing better than Probst and Seacrest and their demonstration of drama and comedy was simple but funny.

Whoa, who WASN'T shocked that Bryan Cranston won? I thought he was one of those always terrific actors that would continually be overlooked. Then again, I thought Ivanek would be too.

So while the night started off with rewarding old Hollywood faves (Piven, Smart), at least Spader and The Shat didn't win AGAIN and many of the awards went to new winners (yay!)! (Well, I guess a lot of new winners are still from the movie heydays of the 80's and 90's (Close, Baldwin, all finding new life in TV. Did you SEE the Best Actress category? It could have been the Oscars from 10 years ago).

In the end, I was 6/12 in my predictions. I was 3/12 on my wishes (though there were many close ones where my second faves won so it wasn't a heinous night, well, except for NPH not winning).

In case you missed it or didn't see it on every other TV site, here are the winners:

My Rocky Relationship With Emmy

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards are on this Sunday, September 21st 2008 at 8pm on ABC/CTV and while I plan to watch, I can't say that I haven't had a strained relationship with Emmy in the last few years.

They may have TRIED to set things right with the new "Lauren Graham nomination process" but it still failed to earn Lauren Graham a nomination. And for everything they do right (Mad Men nominations), they get too many things wrong (constantly ignoring Friday Night Lights, anything on The CW or almost anybody who isn't white).

They've already held the Creative Emmy's this past weekend (which seemed a LOT more fun with hosts Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother) where Kathy Griffin won again!) but really, people only care about the big awards so let's do some predictions and hopes:

Outstanding Drama Series
Boston Legal (ABC)
Damages (FX)
Dexter (Showtime)
House (FOX)
Lost (ABC) - SHOULD WIN
Mad Men (AMC) - WILL WIN

Should Have Been Nominated: Friday Night Lights and I hear The Wire and Battlestar but generally I'm happy with the list.
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Boston Legal. I like the show, but not THAT much.

Outstanding Comedy Series
30 Rock (NBC) - SHOULD WIN/WILL WIN
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
Entourage (HBO)
The Office (NBC)
Two and a Half Men (CBS)

Should Have Been Nominated: Weeds, Pushing Daisies, Aliens in America, How I Met Your Mother
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Two and a Half Men, Entourage. Entourage was just not up to snuff last season as it usually is.
And I'm not a big fan of Curb either.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Gabriel Byrne for playing Dr. Paul Weston on In Treatment (HBO)
Bryan Cranston for playing Walt White on Breaking Bad (AMC)
Michael C. Hall for playing Dexter Morgan on Dexter (Showtime)
Jon Hamm for playing Don Draper on Mad Men (AMC) - SHOULD WIN/WILL WIN
Hugh Laurie for playing Dr. Gregory House on House (FOX)
James Spader for playing Alan Shore on Boston Legal (ABC)

Should Have Been Nominated: Kyle Chandler on Friday Night Lights, Jeffrey Donovan on Burn Notice
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: James Spader on Boston Legal
I haven't watched three of these shows though so... yah... that's all I got.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin for playing Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock (NBC) - SHOULD WIN
Steve Carell for playing Michael Scott on The Office (NBC) - WILL WIN
Lee Pace for playing Ned on Pushing Daisies (ABC)
Tony Shalhoub for playing Adrian Monk on Monk (USA)
Charlie Sheen for playing Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men (CBS)

Should Have Been Nominated: Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory, Tyler James Williams in Everybody Hates Chris, Adhir Kalyan in Aliens in America
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Charlie Sheen and Tony Shalhoub. AGAIN.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Glenn Close for playing Patricia "Patty" Hewes on Damages (FX) - SHOULD WIN
Sally Field for playing Nora Walker on Brothers & Sisters (ABC)
Mariska Hargitay for playing Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC)
Holly Hunter for playing Grace Hanadarko on Saving Grace (TNT) - WILL WIN
Kyra Sedgwick for playing Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer (TNT)

Should Have Been Nominated: Connie Britton on Friday Night Lights, Elizabeth Moss on Mad Men
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Kyra Sedgwick. I know. Emmy loves her. I can't stand her cliched performance.
Generally a strong category though and really, it could be anyones game, and it almost should be anyones game.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate for playing Samantha "Sam" Newly on Samantha Who? (ABC)
America Ferrera for playing Betty Suarez on Ugly Betty (ABC)
Tina Fey for playing Liz Lemon on 30 Rock (NBC) - WILL WIN
Julia Louis-Dreyfus for playing Christine Campbell on The New Adventures of Old Christine (CBS)
Mary-Louise Parker for playing Nancy Botwin on Weeds (Showtime) - SHOULD WIN

Should Have Been Nominated: Tichina Arnold on Everybody Hates Chris, Amy Pietz in Aliens in America
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: No one. This is a great list and I wouldn't take out anybody. I would just keep adding.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Ted Danson for playing Arthur Frobisher on Damages (FX) - SHOULD WIN
Michael Emerson for playing Benjamin Linus on Lost (ABC) - SHOULD WIN
Željko Ivanek for playing Ray Fiske on Damages (FX)
William Shatner for playing Denny Crane on Boston Legal (ABC)
John Slattery for playing Roger Sterling on Mad Men (AMC) - WILL WIN

Should Have Been Nominated: Terry O'Quinn on Lost
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: The Shat.
I'm pretty much down with anyone except The Shat winning.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Jon Cryer for playing Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Kevin Dillon for playing Johnny "Drama" Chase on Entourage (HBO)
Neil Patrick Harris for playing Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - SHOULD WIN/WILL WIN
Jeremy Piven for playing Ari Gold on Entourage (HBO)
Rainn Wilson for playing Dwight Schrute on The Office (NBC)

Should Have Been Nominated: Chi McBride on Pushing Daisies, Michael Urie on Ugly Betty, Justin Kirk on Weeds, Adam Baldwin on Chuck
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Jon Cryer. I like him but not for this show.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Candice Bergen for playing Shirley Schmidt on Boston Legal (ABC)
Rachel Griffiths for playing Sarah Whedon on Brothers and Sisters (ABC)
Sandra Oh for playing Dr. Christina Yang on Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
Dianne Wiest for playing Gina on In Treatment (HBO) - WILL WIN
Chandra Wilson for playing Dr. Miranda Bailey on Grey's Anatomy (ABC) - SHOULD WIN

Should Have Been Nominated: Adrianne Palicki in Friday Night Lights, Michaela Conlin in Bones, Yunjin Kim and Elizabeth Mitchell in Lost
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: No one really but I had a hard time picking. All great actresses in great roles but none of them were given much to do season this past season.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Kristin Chenoweth for playing Olive Snook on Pushing Daisies (ABC) - SHOULD WIN
Amy Poehler for playing various characters on Saturday Night Live (NBC) - WILL WIN
Jean Smart for playing Regina Newly on Samantha Who? (ABC)
Holland Taylor for playing Evelyn Harper on Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Vanessa L. Williams for playing Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty (ABC)

Should Have Been Nominated: Becki Newton on Ugly Betty
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: None. I like this list. Even Taylor for that show I don't like.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program
The Amazing Race (CBS)- WILL WIN
American Idol (FOX)
Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
Project Runway (Bravo) - SHOULD WIN
Top Chef (Bravo)

Should Have Been Nominated: So You Think You Can Dance
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Dancing with the Stars
I would almost lean towards Top Chef winning this year though. Even though it really should have been SYTYCD.

Outstanding Host for a Reality Show or Reality Competition
Tom Bergeron - Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
Heidi Klum - Project Runway (Bravo) - SHOULD WIN
Howie Mandel - Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Jeff Probst - Survivor (CBS) - WILL WIN
Ryan Seacrest - American Idol (FOX)

Should Have Been Nominated: Phil Keoghan on the Amazing Race, Padma Lakshmi on Top Chef, Cat Deeley on So You Think You Could Dance
Shouldn't Have Been Nominated: Howie Mandel
I don't hate Ryan Seacrest but god forbid he wins this thing (which he might).

Awards That Actually Don't Make Me Throw Up - The TCA Award Nominations

Well, officially the TV season is over and it's Emmy voting season time. Not that anybody that reads me gets to vote or not that I get to vote (cause maybe for once their might actually be some decent nominees then and if I have time I'll be posting about my wish picks for this years Emmy's).

Which is why I love the TCA Awards because it stands for the Television Critics Association (Michael Ausiello, Ken Tucker, Matt Roush, Alan Sepinwall, and Maureen Ryan amongst them) and they generally have better picks than the other award shows. As in, shows that actually deserve awards. (Here was last years noms)

The full list of nominees (with my 2 cents in Red as usual):

PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

John Adams (HBO)
Lost (ABC)
Friday Night Lights (NBC)
Mad Men (AMC)
Ken Burns' The War (PBS)
The Wire (HBO)

Solid category from what I've seen or heard. I would give this to Lost this year, even though I love Friday Night Lights and Mad Men is terrific. I still haven't started The Wire yet but I know I know, it's supposed to be one of the best shows ever.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY

30 Rock (NBC)
The Colbert Report (Comedy Central)
The Daily Show (Comedy Central)
Flight of the Conchords (HBO)
The Office (NBC)

I don't get Flight of the Conchords. As in, I don't get the channel nor do I understand it when I've seen it. Colbert and Daily are always great but I thought this year belongs to 30 Rock.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

Damages (FX)
Friday Night Lights (NBC)
Lost (ABC)
Mad Men (AMC)
The Wire (HBO)

I could pretty much make a case for any of these shows winning. Again, this is Lost's year but everything is else is so strong that this is an amazing set of nominees.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT MOVIES, MINI-SERIES AND SPECIALS

John Adams (HBO)
Masterpiece: Cranford (PBS)
Masterpiece: Jane Austen Collection (PBS)
Ken Burns' The War (PBS)
A Raisin in the Sun (ABC)

I only saw A Raisin in the Sun but everything else was supposed to be pretty good.

OUTSTANDING NEW PROGRAM

Breaking Bad (AMC)
Damages (FX)
Flight of the Conchords (HBO)
Mad Men (AMC)
Pushing Daisies (ABC)

Again, other than Flight which I just don't get, it's a great group, though I would lean towards Pushing Daisies but I could also give it to Mad Men or Damages and be totally thrilled as well.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY

Christina Applegate (Samantha Who? )
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Ray Wise (Reaper)

Wow, Reaper got a nomination! Reaper was remembered! Love Applegate and Colbert but I'm split between 30 Rock's Fey and Baldwin.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Paul Giamatti (John Adams)
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
David Simon (The Wire)

Can everyone get an award? Or at least Britton, Close and Hamm?

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING

Curious George (PBS)
High School Musical 2 (The Disney Channel)
Hannah Montana (Disney Channel)
Word Girl (PBS)
Yo Gabba Gabba (Nickelodeon)

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN NEWS AND INFORMATION

Alive Day Memories (HBO)
This American Life (Showtime)
Frontline (PBS)
Nimrod Nation (Sundance Channel)
Ken Burns' The War (PBS)

HERITAGE AWARD

M*A*S*H (CBS)
Roots (ABC)
Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Sesame Street (PBS)
The Wire (HBO)

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT

James Garner
Lorne Michaels
Bill Moyers
William Shatner
Mike Wallace

The TCA Awards are scheduled for Saturday, July 19.

Considering there was much love for Aliens in America by the critics, I wish it had gotten some recognition before it dies it early death by the hands of the evil Dawn Ostroff. Plus Kyle Chandler still deserves recognition of his amazing portroyal but at least his counterpart Connie Britton is still on the list (that I will admit, is fully crowded with deserving performances).

The Golden Globe Awards - Oh Yeah, This Was Still Going On?

I kept forgetting the Golden Globes was on this weekend. I usually love watching the Golden Globes. Drunk Stars? A willingness to pick more off-beat picks? Usually made for a better awards show.

Still, with apologies to the deserved nominees and winners, I just didn't care as much this year, in part because I wish the whole WGA strike would get resolved properly.

Still, there's nothing on between The Amazing Race and one of the final Brothers & Sisters.

NBC couldn't get anyone better to host the "press conference" other than Billy Bush? Why the hell is Billy Bush making opinionated comments? Who cares? Isn't he hired to be a pretty(ish) face?

Oh, CNN is carrying the actual live announcement. Though what's with the fake drum role? That's just ridiculous.

I kinda like hearing all the winners one after the other. This strike may have just started something. I miss the "oh. ME?" shocked surprised look (the better the actor, the more real the "shocked" look looks) but getting all the awards over with in 30 minutes was a big plus.

And whatever you think of Melissa Rivers, I must say, she's quite adamant about clearing up the rumours and issues around the writers strike and is extremely supportive of the writers. I gotta give her props for that.

Anyways, here are the winners (and nominations in the link) and some of my kneejerk reactionary comments:

Best Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There

Best Supporting TV Actor - Jeremy Piven - Entourage

Best Actress TV Drama - Glenn Close - Damages

Best Supporting TV Actress - Samantha Morton - Longford - I hate when TV-movie people win in this category. They shouldn't be even in this category.

Best Actor TV Drama - Jon Hamm - Mad Men - Oh Yey! I didn't know who this actor was before I saw the show but he was simply mesmerizing in Mad Men and an actor to watch out for from now on.

Best Motion Picture Actress, Musical or Comedy - Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose

Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture - Javier Bardem - No Country For Old Men - I would agree if I watched his performance but he was so scary I think I closed my eyes through 90% of the time he was on the screen.

Best Original Song - "Guaranteed" - Into the Wild - Whatever. It was the "cool" choice. I'm so over the "cool" choices in the song categories now.

Best Animated Film - Ratatouille - Was there really any other competition? Persepolis maybe but Ratatouille had it all. Smarts and popularity.

Best TV Movie or Mini-Series - Longford

Best Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-Series - Jim Broadbent - Longford

Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-Series - Queen Latifah - Life Support

Best Motion Picture Screenplay - Ethan and Joel Cohen - No Country For Old Men

Best Actor TV Comedy - David Duchovny - Californication - WHAT??? Love David but WHAT??? Over Alec? Over Lee Pace? Over Ricky Gervais?

Best TV Series Comedy - Extras - Wow, I don't disagree even though I would have liked to see Pushing Daisies or 30 Rock win.

Best Motion Picture Actress, Drama - Julie Christie - Away From Her - I just watched this yesterday and for once, I actually think the "give it to the old person" award was actually deserved.

Best Original Score, Motion Picture - Dario Marianelli - Atonement

Best Actress TV Comedy - Tina Fey - 30 Rock - Yey and neh! Such a strong category that I would have been happy AND mad at the same time with any of the choices.

Best Director, Motion Picture - Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Wow, that's pretty cool actually.

Best Motion Picture Actor, Musical or Comedy - Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Best Picture, Musical or Comedy - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Best Foreign Language Film - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - This is probably the first time I've actually heard of all the nominees and almost all got North American releases BEFORE the Oscars. That's nice to see!

Best TV Drama - Mad Men - Oh yey!

Best Motion Picture Actor, Drama - Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood - Can DDL do a bad job acting? Though I'd like to see him do something light for once. Let's see him take on a musical comedy. Now THAT'S HARD!

Best Picture, Drama - Atonement - Wow, so that keeps this movie back in the Oscar race. If there is still a race.

Overall, pretty good. I might have chose some different winners but no winner really offended me or was totally undeserving.

Almost Everyone Gets A Golden Globe Nomination!

With the relief that my last job had ended, the excitement of news of my next one, and my current vacation in NY (I'll update when I have more moments but so far, won lottery for Wicked (which I hated before and actually kinda like this time around and I'll explain in another post), Young Frankenstein (great cast, so so musical), and saw the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular (still too cheesy touristy for me), and Cirque du Soleil's Wintuk (good show, but really Cirque geared for newbies or kids but still a good show, if not the best Cirque I've seen) I completely forgot that the Golden Globe nominations came out today.

I'll review when I get back home but apparently everyone got nominated (with several categories going over 5, 7 noms for Best Dramatic Picture), some love for the cables (Mad Men! Damages! Big Love!) and Pushing Daisies! and 30 Rock! but where's Ugly Betty? or Friday Night Lights? shunned again...

The 25 main categories are after the jump. I'll come back to this and add some comments but I need sleep since I have many more shows to see in NY this weekend!
