A Visit from Santa Paws
Merry Meows all! Hope everyone had a wonderful visit from "Santa Paws!" Apparently, we were very, very good this year. Lots of Greenie Treats and cat toys to go around for all of us ...
And, we even received a special Christmas card from our best buddies ...
(L-R) "Acey" (the black lab), "Rocky" the cat (on Santa's lap), Punkin' (the beagle), and our BFF "Miss Sadie" (the basset hound)
We were so happy to hear from them! Mom says that their mommy is her very dear friend, Miss Judy. Judy took such great care of us whenever mommy and daddy went on their week-long trips with grandma and grandpa. We sure do love her and miss her lots. Next to our own mommy, she is the best!
Have a purrfect weekend everyone!

A Catnip Alternative?
Everyone knows that cats go crazy over catnip. Well, most cats anyway. A third of the feline population does not. Midnight, for example, has never been affected by it. In fact, he merely sniffs it and then casually walks away.
Then I recently noticed that Auntie Judy's Christmas/Yule cat toys she gave to our kitties this year were getting a very good reaction from my Midnight. I knew that there was no catnip in these toys because I could not even get a hint of it. When I asked Judy about this, she said, "It isn't catnip. It's honeysuckle."
Honeysuckle? Whoa, really? Turns out that many pet stores are beginning to sell cat toys with honeysuckle in them as an alternative to catnip ~ mainly for cats such as my cat Midnight. And from what I have seen, it works pretty well!
So exactly how does honeysuckle work? Well, apparently there are over 180 species of honeysuckle shrubs and vines. But, only one species, Lonicera tartarica or Tartarian Honeysuckle, seems to have an effect on cats. Cats who are stimulated by honeysuckle tend to act the same exhibiting uninhibited playfulness and antics as those who are under the influence of catnip. This is because Tartarian Honeysuckle contains a chemical that is similar to the active ingredient in catnip. Most likely, it is this substance that puts cats into a frenzy state.
How safe is honeysuckle for cats? There have been no reports of serious side effects from honeysuckle toys and spray. However, some species of honeysuckle, and possibly the berries from honeysuckle plants, may be toxic to cats. To be safe on the safe side, you should only buy honeysuckle products from trusted vendors. Also, just as with catnip, some cats may be more aggressive than usual when under honeysuckle’s spell, so keep that in mind when giving your kitty anything with honeysuckle in it.

Spoiled much?
Well, the winter weather has officially begun here in Berks County, PA. On Christmas eve, we were blessed with enough snow to make everything look pretty, yet not too much as to have to worry about the driving conditions on the country roads on Christmas day ...
Of course, the cats paid no never mind to the falling snow on the ground as they awaited their gifts from Santa Paws in the morning. As usual, they made out like little bandits ~ receiving goody bags of toys and treats from grandma and Auntie Judy as well ...
Hubby and I also exchanged our gifts to each other and then headed off to spend the rest of the day with both our families. We had such a lovely day which included very lovely gifts. Although, none could compare to the most wonderful gift of all. You see, for those of you who do not also follow my other blog "The Wiccan Life", I told my hubby a few days ago that all I wanted for Christmas was Mr. Gray's re-test to be negative for FEL-Leuk! So, I received a call from him at work on Wednesday morning and the first thing he said to me was, "Merry Christmas!" A bit confused and not knowing if he was trying to be funny or not, I said, "Huh? What happened now?" He then replied, "What do you think? The vet just left a message saying that Mr. Gray's test was negative!" Stunned, I paused for a brief moment and then began to cry happily. That's right, both his re-tests came out negative meaning that not only does he not have the disease, but he is not a carrier either.
For us, this was nothing short of a Yule and Christmas miracle. And it also goes to show how the love and support of our friends out there who sent him so much healing energy and positive thoughts means the world! A huge and heart-felt "Thank you" to all of you! I am truly blessed to have found your friendship!!
Now, we can spoil him just as much as we have the rest of our fur babies and I so very much look forward to it!!!

A very special message from "The Cats"
On this eve of yet another holiday, mom is running around like a crazy woman wrapping the last of the Christmas presents for she and daddy's folks! We get such a kick out of watching her scurry ~ tee hee!!!
She is so busy that she let us "borrow" her computer to post a holiday message to all of you. We are usually not allowed to touch the keyboard because mommy says we can't be trusted. But we know that she is wrong and we are "always" good kitties. Shows what she knows ...
Any meow, as kitties with class, we just wanted to take the time to wish all of our friends and fellow cat lovers out there a Very Happy and Wondrous Holiday Season from all of us here at the funny farm, uh, we mean The Witchy Cats Blog!
We wuv you all,
Midnight, Haley, Kiki, Tabitha, Sam (the bunny), & Mr. "Earl" Gray

A Merry Yule from Auntie Judy and Cats!
My very dear friend and cat-sitter, Judy, and I always exchange presents every year. And every year she adorns my kitties with a big bag of precious gifts of goody treats and cat toys ...
She also understands just how much I LOVE mermaids and always buys me the most amazing gifts ...

And what did I get her? Well, since Judy is the friend who turned me on to Jim Shore collectibles, I gave her a Jim Shore Santa holding an orange cat, a pair of bassett hound socks, and a baggie full of cat treats for her kitties, a couple of holiday tennis balls for her three doggies, and a large bag of Greenies dog treats.
Judy also happens to be the friend from whom I was blessed with our little Haley-girl. Needless to say, Haley is her absolute favorite of our crew and so I always give her just a little something special from her. This year, it was a small tree ornament with Haley's pic and her name on it. She loved it!!
Thank you so very much Auntie Judy for making our Yule yet another special occasion!

A Treat From Jack: "What's This?" (from The Nightmare Before Christmas)
One of my favorite holiday movies is Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas." It is a rather unique combination of my two favorite celebrations ~ Yule/Christmas and Samhain/Halloween. This is Danny Elfman as "Jack Skellington" singing, "What's This?" I hope you all enjoy!

Our visit from Santa Paws ...
Hey everyone, it's just Kim's cats ~ Midnight, Haley 'n' Kiki. We slipped her some of our strongest catnip in her hot tea in order to hijack her computer to write this post ~ tee hee! We gotta tell you, our mommy and daddy really love us ~ even though they did leave us alone the entire day on Christmas! Silly humans ... no matter, atleast Santa Paws remembered us! He gave us some cool toys and our favorite snack, "Greenies" treats. Gee, we must have been really good kitties this year ~ (ha, have we ever got him fooled, eh)!
Of course, after mom and dad came home from their travels, they adorned us with more cat treats and toys! Guess that was their way of trying to make up for being gone all day and "yes" it worked!

New addition to the Yule Tree
Yesterday afternoon, my hubby and I decided we wanted to get out of the house for a bit. So we drove down to one of our local Flea Market/Auction House's in our area, "Zern's." There we found all kinds of neat treasures. Among them was a pretty cool little decoration which, being the crafty and imaginative little witch that I usually am, immediately made me think of Yule and how nice I thought it would look hanging on our tree this year. To me, it looks festively Pagan/Wiccan ...
Of course, it had to meet the cats approval. After all, it is "their" Yule Tree ~ LOL!!
I wish everyone a Very Blessed Yuletide and a
Very Merry Christmas from us to all of you!!!

The Legend of the Christmas Spider ~ by Francis Morlan
**********************************************
There are many miracles of Christmas. From Germany comes the folk tale of the Christmas Spider ~ a miracle that took place due to the simple house keeping chores associated with the season. As the story was told, a family living in a small home worked together one Christmas Eve day to clean the house. They cleaned it from top to bottom. All the spiders living in the various parts of the house escaped to the attic as the cleaning took place. Later that evening, after all had gone to bed, they were delighted to see that at least one place in the home remained that would be suitable for a spider -- the Christmas tree!
Having nowhere else to go to spin their webs, they dashed up the trunk of the tree and leaped from branch to branch, spinning their webs and making for them selves a new place in which to live. When Santa Claus arrived he encountered the web-covered tree and somewhat of a difficult dilemma: did he keep the tree wrapped in spider webs and disappoint the family? Or should he remove the webs and destroy the spiders' new home (and ruin their Christmas in the process)?
Santa fixed everything. He turned the spider webs into shimmering silver strands that turned the tree into a brilliant decoration. His action thrilled the family - and saved the spiders. That is why today many people decorate their tree with tinsel -- in honor of the Christmas Spider.
