Even sadder, maybe...

...but just as true. Thers...
No current member of the United States armed forces is in any meaningful sense "protecting your freedom."
They would I'm sure be willing to do this. But they aren't in fact doing anything of the sort.
The way to support the troops is to bring 'em home until we have a mission worthy of their service and sacrifice.

The way to honor the fallen is to stop making more of them for no good reason.

Good idea.

President Hamid Karzai demanded Thursday that the United States pull back from combat outposts and confine its troops to military bases in Afghanistan, an apparent response to Sunday's shooting rampage by a U.S. staff sergeant.
An even better idea would be to move our troops to military bases outside Afghanistan.

Jonathan Bernstein...

I think the way to get out of Afghanistan is, more than anything else, to leave. That is, not to set conditions for leaving, but to just leave.

Yes, you may.

Michael Moore...
If we really want to send bin Laden not just to his death, but also to his defeat, may I suggest that we reverse all of that right now. End the wars, bring the troops home, make the rich pay for this mess, and restore our privacy and due process rights that used to distinguish us from any other country.

Have I mentioned lately…

…that I hate what they're doing to my Army...
For the second year in a row, more American soldiers—both enlisted men and women and veterans—committed suicide than were killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Excluding accidents and illness, 462 soldiers died in combat, while 468 committed suicide.
When the problem's getting worse, it's time to do something different.

Taking our troops out of combat zones until we find a mission worthy of their sacrifice might be a good start.

And the painted ponies go up and down...

Lt. Col. Joseph Ryan, on the Pech Valley campaign in Afghaninam...
"There is nothing strategically important about this terrain. We fight here because the enemy is here. The enemy fights here because we are here."
Lt. Col. Ryan has spent nearly a decade in combat. Isn't it time we brought him and his troops home until we find a mission worthy of their service and sacrifice?

Quote of the day.

Afghani President Hamid Karzai...
“If I had to choose sides today, I’d choose the Taliban.”
Americans died last week to sustain his government. Americans will surely die this week to sustain his government.

Enough.

Bring 'em home until we have a mission worthy of their service.

Hamid Karzai ain't it.

Yep…

…I still hate what they're doing to my Army...
The Defense Department's Medical Surveillance report from November examines "a large, widespread, and growing mental health problem among U.S. military members."

****

The Army was hit hardest by the most common and long-lasting problems -- post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder, alcohol dependence and substance dependence, according to the report.
Support the troops. Bring 'em home until we have a mission worthy of their service.

They mean well, I'm sure…

…but I'm not at all sure they have any control to cede...
AFP - The NATO allies open a two-day summit Friday to back a 2014 target for ceding control over the bogged-down Afghan war to Kabul.

What "victory" looks like.

This...
BAGHDAD — A string of bombings killed 37 people Sunday in Iraq's deadliest day since Aug. 31, when President Barack Obama said the U.S. military's seven-year-old combat mission there had ended.
…and this...
…the 50,000 U.S. soldiers who remain in Iraq, far from merely "advising and assisting" Iraqi forces, as the Obama administration has described their new role, are still needed on the battlefields as insurgents try to exploit the diminished American military presence and the six-month political stalemate that's failed to produce a new Iraqi government since the country's March 7 elections.
In fact, it looks a lot like "war." With, you know "combat operations."

At least we "won," I guess.

Damn.

AP - Eight American troops died in attacks in southern Afghanistan, including a car bombing and gunfight outside a police compound in Kandahar, officials said Wednesday as the Taliban push back against a coalition effort to secure the volatile region.
They don't want us there. Fine. Let's leave.
