Easter Giveaway

No, I don't have my holidays mixed up but .... Well, let me explain.  My hubby volunteers with the Patriot Guard Riders and would like to have a giveaway for some special Vets during the Easter holidays.  Now I can see some of you are frowning because you don't know what the Patriot Guard Riders is.  That's what I am here for, to answer those very questions.

A long time ago there was a funeral for one of our military servicemen that was killed in the line of duty.  The minister of a local Church in that community decided to protest the funeral because he believed we were a nation of evil.   Now as you know, at a funeral it is a very touching and emotional struggle just to make it through without breaking down from the stress.  But then you add these people that are yelling obscenities at the family of the slained soldier that gave his life for you, and pretty soon you can't even hear yourself think.  They hold signs that say things like "I'm glad he was killed" and "you got what you deserve".

Because of this church's RIGHTS to protest, the families had no protection from these people.  Hence, the Patriot Guard Riders was born.  On motorcycles with American flags flying,  the PGR rides up to funerals and escort the casket into the Church/cemetery and stand in a very prestigious Flag Line (side by side) to ensure that there is no harassment of the grieving family.  Some of the men will stand on the street corner with our American Flags and not say a word but block the family from having to see these protesters.  We are a peaceful group and all we are trying to do is permit the loved ones to have a civil ceremony and to pay  their last respects.

Now what all this started about is there is a group HOTH--Helping On The Homefront,  that falls under the Patriot Guard Riders Rules ( my hubby is the South Dakota Assistant HOTH Coordinator).  His job is support of our troops in VA hospitals and anywhere else Vets that need help (former or current Vets).  A project they are doing is a Santa visit this December to the VA with gifts.  This money was raised by selling chances on a patriotic quilt.  Now they are already planning  help/visiting at Easter for the heroes of America staying at the VA in Sturgis SD.  They have decided to try to get some lapghans made in time to sell chances on them to the public so they can purchase some items to give out to our Rehab Hospital Rapid City, S.D., and our VA Hospital in Sturgis.

So if anyone has anything, and I mean anything, potholders, doilies, anything.  We would love to have any item that you could part with.  I assure you, that every item that is sent will be photographed and put on my page here with the name of the person that sent it.  If you would rather not be given credit, please say that in your email, we want to make everyone happy.

I suppose I have chatted on long enough, think about this before you obligate yourself to do something that you may not have time to do.  Take care and may God smile on you today.

Molly    =)

An Apron For A Bucket??

Yes you read that right I haven't lost my mind.  In the link below you will see how to make an apron that fits around a bucket.  The apron really is designed for gardening tools but there are too many possibilities for the usage of this item that are floating around in my head.

There are pockets on the outside that can be used to hold all sorts of your sewing supplies while you have all of your fabric inside the bucket. There are so many things to use this idea for, like a place for the kids to keep their colors in the pockets and coloring books in the bucket.  Or if you happen to be cleaning your sprays can fit in the pockets while larger containers go in the bucket with cleaning cloths. But another great idea is to make several of these aprons, put them on buckets and gift them as gifts so your friends can have fun also.

Well, check it out and see what y'all think.  While y'all do that I am heading to the store for my bucket...or 2 or maybe 3 of them.  Take care

A Star Is A Star

I have made several Star Quilts and was even lucky enough to join a group of Amish ladies to help them finish one and then when we moved here to South Dakota I was also blessed to help some of the Native women finish one.  They awarded me that quilt for helping them and it now hangs on my wall. That is the picture that I have included below.

The easiest way to make one is to do it in strips instead of cutting all the diamonds.  If you have not done this before there are many books and articles that can help you out.  But I have included a link below that has a great tutorial that I think is written very well.  So if you are interested in learning this method please stop by this link, you will be glad you did.

Another Old Bag

Yes, I hate to tell you but I found another great tutorial for making a tote bag.  This bag is on my Christmas list big time.  I am making one for each of the g-kids and putting their presents in it, then all the girls get "girly" stuff in theirs.  We are talking everything from lip gloss on to nail polish and those things that you stick between your toes while you polish them, my girls like all the little stuff instead of one big gift.

So here is the link to the tutorial and here is the photo so you know what yours should turn out like.  Naturally feel free to change it around any way you choose, after all, this is YOUR gift.  Have fun !!

Summer Cover Ups

First off this is not about making a sweater or even something else to wear.  This is about making something for our bowls or glasses to wear so the outside bugs cannot get in to bother the food.  If you are like us we love to go sit outside and have our dinner because the weather is just so nice that time of day.  But the bugs also love to come out at that time of day and they want to eat with us.......and we don't want them invited! So you will find a link to a great tutorial on how to make some for yourself plus a photo of hers.  Good Luck and have fun!

Second Time Around

http://blog.christyscreations.com/tea-wallet-tutorial/

A friend of mine, Kathie, wrote me and asked if I stilll had the instructions on how to make a tea bag wallet.  My memory is not what it used to be so thank heavens for bookmarks.  I wrote about this ages ago and the one you see above is the one that I made and the link is to the tutorial on how to make your own.  It is made to carry tea bags and/or sweetener so all you need is a cup of hot water and you are set to go.  I made several of these and gave them out as gifts so go look at her tutorial and I think a number of your gift questions will be answered.  Kathie, enjoy this and bookmark it  8>)

Way Off The Subject

Now don't think I have gone completely nuts here, but the link below is to a site that is down as a Homework Helper.  But trust me, it has so much information on it that I enjoy just browsing through it.  But if you know anyone that homeschools their children please pass this along because it really is a goldmine of information.

Great Blog Marvelous Giveaway

I ran across this blog, Create With Joy, awhile back and was just mesmerized by all her art work.  It is impossible to tell you all she creates, it probably would be easier to say she doesn't make shoes. *LOL*  Anyway she is having a month long giveaway and there are winners each week and she may even extend the date.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first weeks winners and I am so excited I can hardly stand it.  Naturally I have given you her link below and if you look down on my right sidebar you will see "Altered Pages" button which will also take you on a trip and let you know some of the items she is working on and also how to enter her giveaway.  Trust me, it definitely is worth the trip, but make sure you are going to have time to browse through everything.  Here's to a great adventure and make sure you tell Ramona I said "Hi"

A Star Is A Star Is A Star

I don't know if you are aware of this but I am just crazy about stars.  I love every quilt star block that I have ever seen.  I make more purses and tote bags than I could ever use in 3 lifetimes.....but I'm always looking for just one more.

So here is one more.  Isn't that clutch bag just the cutest thing?  Now I never dress up because I'm just a bluejeans type of person but my oldest daughter is very girly, and in her job she has to dress up for certain events.  So I thought I would make her this bag for Christmas this year.  But my smart husband said I'd better give it to her for her birthday in Oct. so she will be able to use it during the holidays.  he is so smart, he married me didn't he??  I heard that !!!

So I hope you enjoy looking at this and reading about it even if you don't get the chance to make one.  There will always be stars in my eyes no matter where I look.  Enjoy!

How good is your math?

Well, you don't want me to answer that because I mess things up even using a calculator.  So I thought there might be some of you out there that could use this chart that I use all the time.

It tells you how many quilt pieces can be cut out of 1 yard of fabric.  It also tells about a fat quarter and many other items.  My favorite is how many squares I can get out of 1 yard, and it gives so many sizes of squares also.  I just love this, so here is the link to it and I hope you enjoy it.  I printed mine out then laminated it so it will last forever, so far it has done a pretty good job of staying out of the way of my rotary cutter.

How many days until Christmas?

Yes, I know it seems like Christmas is a long way off, but if you are like me it is here before I know it.  I try to make some gifts all during the year, but it seems like I am always a few short.  So I'm usually spending christmas Eve finishing up a few things.  Well all this is leading to the tutorial I was watching on how to make cards with my sewing machine and fabric.  Now how handy can that be?  Everybody loves a card for any reason, they always make you feel like you are important and loved.  So I decided I would get a head start on all sorts of cards so I would have some ready when I needed them.  As always the link below is to the tutorial for making some trees on cards.  But before you leave her blog look around because she has a bunch of great ideas that you might want to look into.  Take care and have fun.

Fabric Bowl

I love to weave baskets and sometimes they turn out pretty good.  Then I got into braiding baskets and they turned out pretty good.  Next was to crochet a basket, again pretty good.  But this is one I haven't done yet.  It is a wrapped core and machine sewn bowl.  Sounds like a confusing name but it really isn't a tough procedure.  At the link below is a fantastic tutorial and photos that will show you exactly how to make one of these bowl pictured above.  One thing that makes it so easy is that you use the soft clothesline as the base and I use my leftover fabric strips to wrap the cord.  So basically it is a very inexpensive project that turns out looking great.  So I hope you take a look at the below site and check out the tutorial and maybe get a head start on some Christmas gifts.  Enjoy

Cupcake Anyone?

I saw this darling quilt and just fell instantly in love with it.  I have included the link to it below, and at this site there is a photo of a wall hanging with just one giant cupcake in the center.  I thought wouldn't that be so much fun at a little girls birthday party to try to pin the cherry on top of the cupcake?  Doesn't that sound like something a group of little girls would have fun playing?  Shoot this old Grandma would even give it a try.  The site also has everything you will need to know on making this plus the pattern to download.

The cupcake squares are 6" x 6" and I could also see them made up into placemats or sewing 4 of them together all facing different directions and using it as the centerpiece for the dining table.  But you know what I think the best part of this project is?  No Calories!!  Enjoy and yes you can have seconds  8>)

Spring Flowers?

Although sometimes the weather outside doesn't feel like spring the calendar says it is April and our body says we are ready for winter to be gone.  Since I live in South Dakota where we just had snow Monday, I am always on the lookout for a project to help me feel like spring really is just around the corner.  I reminded myself of a great tutorial for making frayed fabric flowers.  Now I am always a little frayed from everyday life, so I figured these flowers were right down my alley, so off I went to dig through my bookmarks to see if I could find it.  Bingo!  I got it.  The picture above is what the tutorial teaches you to make and the link to the site is below.  Whether or not you are in need of flowers right now I do believe there will be a time one of your projects will just be yelling for a flower to put in that spot right ...there.  I can see these on tote bags, vests, hats, and on and on.  Trust me once you get started making them you won't need any plant food to make them grow, they will appear all on their own.  Have fun arranging your flowers.

I Have A Notion

Have any of you ever used an item called Qtools Sewing Edge Strip?  It is a strip that looks like colored tape and you apply it to the bottom of your quilting ruler precisely at the width that you need to cut.  Then when you are ready to cut the fabric sort of stops at the correct distance because you put the measurement on there.  I'm not to good at explaining that is why Kelly has put this video on her blog so we can all see it actually being used.  There is a link below also for her blog and do go stop by there because she has so much information to share you just wouldn't believe it.  plus she also show you how to use this same product on the bed of your sewing machine.

So, get the drink, bowl of popcorn 'cause the show is ready to begin.  Enjoy.

Tote Bag Makeover

I have had a couple of questions about the tote bag that is in my slide show over on the left side here.  I took a simple $1 bag from Wally World that has their logo on the side of it and I added a quilt block that I turned into a pocket.  So really here is what I did.

1.  Measure the logo on your bag that you want to cover up.  Then make a quilt block that size. I made a 6" quilt block.  Then I got a scrap piece of fabric the same size of the quilt block.
2.  Now placing the fabric and the quilt square right sides together,  I sewed around them leaving a 2" opening on one of the sides.  Now turn them right side out using the 2" opening.  Use a chopstick or another item to help push out the corners so it looks nice and square.
3.  Sorry, now you have to iron.  Using your iron press the square nicely and fold in the opening edges so they will be enclosed in the sewing.
4.  Now get your bag and place your square over the logo,  make sure you have the 2" opening part positioned at the "bottom" of the pocket.  Pin it in place so it doesn't move around while you sew it.
5.  All you do now is sew around the three sides leaving the top open to form the pocket.  Now you're done.

Naturally, you can make these any way you choose.  You can just use a pretty fabric for the pocket, or change it where you sew a long strip across the whole bottom section to then form 3 pockets.  Once you get started you will come up with a million different ideas.

Sew-What's-New

Sew-What's-New is a fantastic group of ladies, actually it numbers in the thousands.  But it is a super place if you want to learn to sew or perhaps you need to freshen up your skills a little bit.  One thing that is so great is that they have 321 videos that cover just about anything you want to do.  Now this cute little Easter placemat pictured above is one of the free patterns there, it is right on the front page so you can't miss it.  I have included the link below to that page.  I think using the carrot to hold the silverware is just such a cute idea, you know for me this could be used all spring not just at Easter time.

So you still have time to whip up a couple of these or probably more if you do them in the multi assembly method.  If you don't understand my Texas way of talking, this method just means that you would apply all the carrots at the same time then all the bottom rabbit faces, and so on in this method.  Basically you would finish all 4 (?) placemats at the same time, instead of sitting and making one complete one,  then go on to placemat #2.  For me I find I work faster this way,  because I already know any little quirks that the pattern requires for it to go together smoothly so I'm ready to work on them all,  one after another.

I guess I will leave this cute pattern with you,  and if you can't make it by there now don't worry, they will be there a long time.  So when you get one or two made you must post a photo for all of us to see, and naturally invite us for coffe and cake----on your new placemats.

Keep your bobbins full.

Fold Over Purse Tutorial

I know the title sounds a little crazy, but if you will just take a quick look at the above photo, I think it will get your interest going a little bit.  This is from a great site called Bloom that has a fantastic tutorial on how to make this purse.  The link is included below. This little item is just one of the cutest things and fastest things I have seen in a long time.  Not to mention all the color combinations you could come up with.  Of course I have thought of a million people I should make one for....will I get a million made?  NO.  But just think how neat they would be for holding a small pair of scissors, thimble, thread, needles, marking pencil, seam ripper.  Did I say a seam ripper?  I admit it, yes,  I own one....or 3.  Then again I can also see how a cute little one would love to have it so she could carry around all her important stuff.  I also think it would be cute made up in pretty spring fabric for Easter, oh gosh, I'm going to be awake all night now just thinking of how to use them.

Pincushions

I belong to a group called Pins & Needles, if you look over in the left sidebar you will see the badge of the group, you really should stop by and check them out.  Now back to what I was saying, we have a chat every Saturday night and a very sweet lady, Doris Sturm, put the Cup Pincushion up as a give-away prize for attendees.  Guess what----I won!!  This is a china cup with a crocheted "ball" as the pincushion section and the pins she sent along look like little sprinkles on a cupcake.  It just is so beautiful, thank you so much Doris.  Now the heart shaped one was a gift from one of my quilting friend.  One year she made these for a bunch of us as a surprise gift, and it works so well because no matter where you stick the pin it goes into the cushion part.  Last but not least, is the ring pincushion, it is made using a pop lid or water bottle lid.  I think most everyone has seen these all around the internet so I won't bore you with all the how-tos of it, but I made these for everybody in our quilting group the same year the heart pincushions were made.  I just love all the many types of pincushions, you can really see the creativity come out of everybody when they get to designing them.  Plus, it seems like you can't have too many, you always need one more, so ladies what are you doing today?  How about taking an inventory of your pincushions and see if you need one more????

A Lesson In Color Values

This is such a simple quilt that lots of times it is used as the first quilt you make.  But in the tutorial that is at the link below, it explains a little bit more for you about the value of the colors.  You aren't matching the colors you are thinking in terms of light, medium, and dark shades.  Plus it is hard to notice the differences when you are so close to it, you need to step away to get the full impression of what it will look like finished.  Anyway, the link does provide great instructions and asks some questions that maybe you just hadn't thought of yet.  It is a great way to use up your "important" scraps that you just can't throw away, this way you have created your own piece of art.  Have fun with it and don't think too hard.

Quick Origami Bag

You know all those small pieces of fabric that we have leftover after our projects?  If you are like me I just can't bear to see them sitting around and not being used.  Then I ran across this site that has such good instructions on how to make these little bags that I was just tickled to death.  She has a tutorial on her site plus she also has a pdf of the same instructions in case you have difficulty with the small print.  I used the pdf and it is really nice.  I printed a copy off to file for future use, let's hope I can find it when I need it.

Anyway, these little bags take no time to make and would be a great gift bag to hold several small bottles of shampoo, body lotion, hand creme, etc.  Plus I made some for my g-daughter and put several barrettes with ribbon woven through them in there, she also uses it to keep all of them together so she doesn't loose any.

If you are like me I always have to try new things, so run over and check out her instructions, I think you will be glad you did.

Cathedral Windows Leah Style

I don't think there is a single soul that does not like a Cathedral Window quilt. There are so many ways to combine colors not to mention using up your scraps to make one. There are also a million ways of putting it all together. Well, hold onto your hat because I have run across the best way in the world. Leah over at Hyena-in-Petticoats ( link at bottom) has made a tutorial that beats all others I have seen. She has great photos and fantastic instructions on what you are doing. The pics are nice sized and things are labeled well, I just cannot stress enough how great this tutorial is. If you have a favorite way to make it and it works great for you that's fine, but at least stop over at Leahs and give her post a good reading. It will really make an impression on you. So quit reading mine and get over there and read hers. Bye!!

Jay To The Rescue

This is a photo of Jay receiving the State of Texas EMS Award for saving the life of the g-son that he is holding. They only give out one award per year for the entire state, and he received it. Jay is always a `Johnny on the spot'. So you are probably wondering where this is going. Well, Jay and I went out for lunch today to one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants. As we pulled into the parking lot we notice an elderly lady parking her car in the handicap parking but taking up two spaces at an angle. So we thought, well she really can't park very well. So we continue inside and get seated then we realize that the lady we had just seen parking is now sitting in a booth a couple of tables from us. We joked about the fact that at least she made it inside okay, then we notice she is drinking a margarita (only a margarita). I have nothing against drinking even though I don't, but this lady had to be about 85 years old and she was not eating any lunch. All she was having was her drink. So being nosy I started to be concerned about her driving home, I had already witnessed her parking and that was before her Margarita lunch. She finally finishes it and then tries to stand up, it took her four attempts but she finally did manage to stand upright. She heads out of the restaurant then suddenly Jay says, "I'll be right back." Now I know my husband and the way he said that phrase meant he was going to get into something. The next sound I hear is Jay's voice asking, "Are you a diabetic?" "What is your name?" "Do you know where you are?" So I just stay in my chair knowing full well that EMT Jay is busy working. She had left her table but made it only to the exit door where she collapsed. Jay's training took over. The lady was in distress and it wasn't from the alcoholic drink. Jay was shouting orders to the onlookers as what to do. "Call an ambulance", "get a blanket", "elevate her legs" roared through the restaurant. I could hear him comforting the lady that she would be okay. The story ends with the ambulance taking her to the hospital and one of the gentlemen driving her car to the hospital for the elderly lady. The manager of the restaurant and all the staff were so thankful that Jay was there and could take over, they all said they did not know what they would have done without him. The end to this story is the lady is being taken care of and so was our lunch bill. Now how was that for a great adventure???

Oh, did I mention about when he saved me from choking ... or when he saved his sister from drowning ... or when ..... well I think you get the idea. He's a good guy to have around.

Pocket Connected To Your Neckbone

I have a very nice neighbor that has a companion dog, now she likes to take her for walks plus she has to go outside for 'those' sort of trips. Anywaaaay, she tries to be so independent but I worry about her. Like what would happen if she fell, or if her dog got loose, what would she do? Naturally I told her she needed to get something to carry her phone in so she could call somebody. All she kept saying was she couldn't carry her purse because that would be too much trouble. So I decided I had to make her something to use. I have made many of these Pocket Necklaces, some of them are pretty with lace and buttons, some are just recycled bluejean pockets and others are just plain old practical things. The one I made for Pam is one necklace but the pocket has a divider so she really has 2 areas to stuff things. My first thought was at least she could carry her phone and the other one could be used for whatever she thinks she might need. I made it out of butterfly fabric and the neck strap has dog prints on it which I thought would be something that she would like. But at least when she uses this I will not worry about her as much as I used to.

Chinese Staircase Bracelet

I haven't made this in about 30 years or so. My oldest daughter, Julie (42) made a zillion of these for all her friends. She was my 'girly' child and had to have everything just perfect. She made them in school colors, her friends favorite color, she about drove us crazy doing them. But I must admit they are cute and pretty quick to make and definitely easy to do. So sometime if you have a little visitor around this bracelet might keep her busy. Now in the video she uses bedspread weight thread, but in ours we used yarn because I always had plenty of colors. So you decide what should be used on yours. Have fun.

The Great State Quilt

This is a project I mentioned in an earlier post and some of you responded to it. Well, she has now asked if anybody wanted to post it on our blog to please do so. I will have the link to her blog in here but her letter should explain what you need to know. http://lifeinjpegs.blogspot.com/

The Plan: Find at least 50 volunteers, at least one person per US State. These 50 volunteers will donate their time and energy to create a single quilting square that will represent their vision of their state. The squares will then be sewed into a quilt that will be donated to a local Children’s Hospital. The goal is to create a visual representation of all 50 states. Everyone who participates will receive photos of the completed quilt, and will be acknowledged for their contribution with a small token of my gratitude.

The Guidelines: The quilt will have 50 squares, each square will represent a different state. If there are too many volunteers I will make a second quilt incorporating those squares and donate it to the Children’s Hospital as well. Other than that it is my hope that each square will have personal vision of the state the person is representing. I also hope to have a way of distinguishing each state (ie the name of the state embroidered onto the square, or the state’s shape somewhere on the fabric. ) The only real rule is that the square must be capable of being sewn to the larger quilt, and should incorporate only fabric supplies. (I have been asked about paper, and other delicate materials, but it needs to be sturdy just in case the Hospital allows the children to touch it.) Also, any items that could pose choking hazards (gems, sequins and beads) are not allowed. (This is so that the Hospital has the option to display the work in whatever ward they see fit, and will allow the children to touch it.)

The Squares: Each square is 5 inches and is made of cotton linen. It’s great for embroidery, and fabric arts. Every person will receive one square and will be asked to return it by February 15th. If at that time we do not have enough squares to complete the quilt, I will ask for more volunteers, since this quilt cannot be finished until we have all 50 States represented. Once all 50 States are assembled then my mother and I will sew the quilt and will contact the Hospital once it is finished. My hope is that it will be completed by April and ready for the Children’s hospital.

The Volunteers: If a state has a tally next to it, that is how many people are currently volunteering for that state. Each state will only be allowed two volunteers. (I’m not sure we could make more than two quilts.) If you know anyone who would be interested in volunteering their time and energy on this project you can have the contact me at : Danielle@StarvingArtStudent.com with the word Quilt as the subject. Once a state is full it will be in red. Here’s hoping this project works.

My Husband To The Rescue

Well, I have been waiting to see if Jay would make a post about this, and he hasn't, so I guess it is up to me to brag on him. First off, for those that have asked where he has been because he hasn't posted in a while. He has been so busy with Patriot Guard and with his "special" activities during the month of December that he truly hasn't had time. For instance today they are at the National Cemetery for the Laying of the Wreaths then after that they are going by Fort Meade to deliver special packages to the patients there. Jay helped last night to get all the bags made up and he will be all dressed up in his special Dec. outfit for the delivery. Okay, now on to what I was really going to write about. We live in an apartment building that has wheelchair access for me, so our front door opens right out into the parking lot. Jay goes a million times a day to that door, opens it, and just checks on the weather or whatever is going on. Tuesday about 3:30pm he opened the door and then heard something that sounded like a yell. When he looked around he noticed a boy over by our large trash dumpster and he was kicking it and making a sort of noise. Jay hollered and asked him if he was okay. Again the boy made a noise but you couldn't understand him. So Jay took off towards him, about that time our neighbor came out and saw Jay so she took off towards the boy also. Well, guess what they found when they got there. The boy had put his tongue to the metal dumpster and was now stuck there, yes that's what I said, he was stuck there. Now it was 0* outside, no cap on, no gloves on, and he was crying he was hurting so bad. Unfortunately he had bled quite a bit, it was all over the ground, and the dumpster and had frozen. So Jay sent the neighbor to me to get a glass of warm water which he used to free the little 9 yr. old. The reason the boy did it? He had just watched the Christmas Story that day and so he had to try it but didn't have a flagpole handy, so he tried the dumpster !! Jay got him loose, the boy went home and when Jay checked on him 30 minutes later he was okay, but a little embarassed about it. Now get ready for this part. It winds up in the local newspaper, Wed. and again on Friday on the front page. Then Jay gets a call from Arizona and they did an interview with him and then said it was probably going to hit the AP. They are doing a big comparision between the boy and the movie, plus patting Jay on the back for finding him and getting him loose. So that's what has been going on around here and we are about ready for things to get back to normal. But you know what? I've dicovered living with my hubby is anything but normal. Take care my friends and stay away from the metal dumpsters. 8>)

How Long Do I Have???

I don't know about y'all but I feel like I am working myself to death and that time is running out on me. I really thought I had everything under control on gifts. I even got them all wrapped, then I realised some people that I had missed. Like our postman and a couple of the wives of the Patriot Guard guys. Now the postman won't be a problem because we have had the same nice man ever since we have lived here, but the two women are the ones I am worried about. I told Jay I think I'm going to be lazy and give them a pretty cup and saucer and a special package of tea. I don't really know them very well so I can't exactly make them a gift or purchase something that I know they would love, so I'm going to take the easy way out. I think the cup and tea is a gift I would enjoy so I think that's what I'll do for them. You know what I told Jay I wanted for Christmas? One of those huge Rubbermaid tubs with a lid so I will have a safe place to put all the items I make all year long. Then of course I need a room added on to keep the tub in. I can't win for losing. I have been practising with my knitting lately, have y'all heard all the rumbling noises? I remember the good old days when I could just click right along at a fast pace, oh yeah....those were the days. I finished some of my last minute sewing projects. I finished making Jay's "thingy" for him to put between the mattress and box springs and has pockets for the remote or flashlight or whatever. Tomorrow I have to make him a new sack for him to carry all his peppermint sticks in to go to the childrens clinic. His old one has just about had it so he decided this was the year for a new one. Today was Jay's birthday and I wanted to take him out for lunch, it was sort of cold (-21* with a wind chill of -35*) but he said it was fine we could go. So I froze and he was just fine enjoying the cold. We came right home after lunch and I got back into my fuzzy warm shoes and started my crocheting. I think that is why quilting, and crocheting is best done in the winter, we have something warm to hold while we work. I suppose I should get in bed it is 1:20 am here and my warm bed is calling me. Take care everyone and stay warm.

A Music Treat

My Sister-in-law sent us this and I just loved it so of course I had to share it with y'all. It is a music video of the gentleman's house which includes a light show. I hope you enjoy it and I apologize for annoying anyone that does not care for music on the blogs. But this is so pretty I couldn't refuse it. Enjoy. 8>)

A Cute Santa

The link below lets you create a dancing Santa and put in your face in place of Santas or anybodies face. One of my girlfriends sent it to me and it is so cute. I made one of Jay and sent it down to our g-sons in Texas, then to our 4yr.old g-daughter in Texas. it is so cute, you gotta go take a look, plus it only takes a minute to make it. So have fun and go dance like Santa.

A Volunteer Quilt In The Making

Now I know all of y'all are just sitting there with nothing to do--stop throwing things!! The link below is getting together anybody that would like to volunteer to make a 5" quilt block representing something that their state makes them think of. I signed up for South Dakota, where we live, and naturally I have Mt. Rushmore or a buffalo that instantly pops into my head. But I am still thinking about other items like the Black Hills, they are just so gorgeous. Oh, I don't know. Okay, anyway below is the link if anybody would like to read about this creation. It is not due until Feb. so there is plenty time. Also if you scroll down a couple of posts she has a complete explanation of the whole thing plus the listing of the states. So check it out and it might give you something to think about later...there is life after December you know. 8>)

Folded Star Trivet

Blog Size

I just love doing these fabric trivets. They are one of those things that you don't have to do a lot of thinking when you make them. I sew mine together on my sewing machine but one of the ladies that I met on a forum sews hers together by hand. Well, #1--I'm too lazy to do that and #2--I don't think I could sew through all the fabric layers very well. So I'll just stick to my old way. But this link has a good tutorial and I think they are a neat and fast gift, so one more for my list. I still have a quilt to finish for Christmas.....or maybe her birthday???

Faux Cathedral Windows

I love this sort of quilt but I am so slow in making it. So I have been searching all through the internet for some hints on how to speed me up. I ran across this video and I really like the way she did it so I had to share it with y'all. But maybe you already know how to do this but it was new to me. I wanted to make a tote bag and use this as a pocket on the outside. You know me...gotta have pockets. Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching her as much as I did. Take care

Wanna Sew Something?

Do y'all love bags? No not the ones under your eyes, I mean the ones that you can cram all your stuff into. Well, I do and I have found the best sewing site in the whole world. I have no idea how many are on this link but I'm sure there are enough kinds that everybody can find something they will like. They give very good sewing instructions plus some added ideas on how to pretty them up a little bit more. So check it out and maybe you'll find something you will be able to use for Christmas. Take care

Small Santa Block

Isn't this a cute Santa block? I think the size of this one is very good. It is a paper-pieced block but I don't see why you couldn't turn it into a regular pieced block as well. I also thought this would look cute as a tree skirt with triangles inserted between these squares or use it as a round tablecloth. I also thought about putting one of these in a smaller version on a Christmas stocking. My poor mind goes into high gear sometimes. *LOL* You might want to check the pattern below for correct sizing, I don't know how it will print out. It is suppose to finish up as a 4" square, but if you are like me you're going to make it whatever size you need it to be. Have fun with it, and maybe a large stocking wouldn't be such a bad idea after all????

Great Sewing Ideas

I'm sure most of y'all are like me when it comes to Christmas gifts. You would like something really nice, something they will use, and something that is cost efficient. Wow, that would be a dream come true, huh? Well, the site below is a neat place to run through and they have it in so many categories that you can search through them very well. Reading through some of my favorite blogs it seems that Tote Bags are a real biggie this year, and I love to make bags. Heck, I have so many bags now I think I should be classified as the Bag Lady. Jay laughs at me but I keep a project in the car for those times when he has to go talk with somebody, or he is delivering coats, or he is just going to run into the store for a minute. I stay in the car and work on whatever small project I have in there. But I enjoy doing it, and of course it helps to pass the time. So take a look through the link below and see if perhaps there is some sewing project that will be just what you need. Happy Stitching!

A Quilter's Poem

I thought I would pass this on to others in case some might want to use it in their Christmas gifts. I have thought about designing my own card and then printing this poem in it. As long as you give credit to EverythingQuilts you can use it. So enjoy reading it and just imagine it is happening at your house.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas Poem
(A Quilters' Version from EverythingQuilts.com)
T'was the night before Christmas and all through the house,
The only one sleeping was a Quilter's dear spouse.
The Log Cabin stockings were almost completed,
"Just a few stitches left," our sweet quilter repeated.
"Then I can hang them and head off to finish
the pillows I'm making, fulfilling Mom's wish

For something quilted to put on her couch and spoke,
as she pricked her poor finger, our quilter said, "Ouch!"
When from out in the kitchen there arose such a crashing,
she sprang from her work, and she dropped all her sashing.

Away to the doorway she flew like a plane,
wondering just what was happening and who she would blame.
When what to her wondering eyes should appear,
but Old Mrs. Claus and her bag of quilt-gear.

With her elves bearing gifts, through the kitchen she came,
she directed and pointed and called them by name.
"Now Elna, now Pfaff, now Bernina and Viking,
the Hoffman and Mumm should be just to her liking.

To the sewing room - there, it's just back of the hall,
now dash away, dash away, dash away all!"
"My Dear," said The Claus (as she liked to be called),
"There really is no need to worry at all.

Your projects will all be completed this night,
I'm terribly sorry we gave you a fright."
"Sit down. Have some tea. It's relaxing, you'll see.
My friends and I've come a long way to help Thee."

She thought she was dreaming, our dear Quilter did,
In fact she quite feared that she near flipped her lid!
But the flash of the needles and twist of the thread
soon gave her to know she had nothing to dread.

They spoke no more words, but went straight to their sewing.
How the work went so quickly she had no way way of knowing.
The stitches, how fine! The corners, how straight!
This Claus-woman's talent was awfully great.

They finished the pillows, then started to quilt.
Before they all knew it, the whole thing was built!
Now old Mrs. Claus, she knew quilters real well,
and she knew they'd need help on this night most of all

So she said to our quilter, "Just move over dear,
I've brought my own needle.
We'll get done, never fear."
I told dear old Santa about what quilters do.

How they plan all these projects but have other work too.
So he taught me his magic for doing things fast.
There, that pillows done. Now this is the last.
They tidied their thread snips, and picked up the scraps
and chased our dear quilter's six cats from their laps.

As they scurried away with their thimbles still gleaming
dear Mrs. Claus paused, her cap ribbons streaming.
"Merry Christmas, my dear, now just have a ball!"

One Present Marked Off The List

I finished the sewing tool caddy so I can now mark that off my list. I had made one for myself and then decided it would make a good present so I still had fabric leftover so....I just made another. One of the things I really like is that it slips under my sewing machine and then all my tools are in their own little pocket. They are easily within reach and always in their place, too bad I can't keep my house that way. I've included the photo with it opened up and then all rolled up, it works great. This is a project that everyone should have, and make for their friend. Enjoy

Christmas Swap

I signed up to do a Christmas Stocking Swap, now doesn't that sound like fun? If you look down the right side of this page you will see the swap square. Unfortunately it is too late for anybody else to join in for this year, but I thought this was a neat swap idea so I just had to tell everybody about it. Another neat point is, it is not a secret thing, you know the person you are making the stocking for. That way you can visit their blog or even talk about your favorite colors or special things you like, so perhaps you will learn enough about them to make their stocking really "fit" their personality. We have to mail them out by Nov. 14, and all we are suppose to add is a card. Isn't that nice? With all the money being so tight we are just making stockings and cards and sharing them. But I can promise you the one I mail out to Kathleen will not be empty. It will be full of best wishes and hugs for her to have the best Christmas season there can be. I guess I'd better start making my list....and checking it twice....to make sure I get everything sewn down just right. Chat later

New Name, Same Old Me

In case you haven't noticed I finally got around to separating my crochet blog from my sewing and quilting blog. So this one has a new name and address, so make sure you bookmark me 'cause I will be very afraid if I am left out here all alone ;-) Of course I have all of y'all bookmarked so I could find my way to your place. It has been such fun running around trying to catch up with what everybody has been doing, let me tell you this. Y'all have made some beautiful things with great patterns and fabrics. It was like going through a quilting catalog, such fun. As a matter of fact I need to get back to reading your posts 'cause it is almost bedtime. Nice to be back and everybody take care.

Crazy Stitched Christmas Felt

Remember these two felt ornaments that I posted a while back? Well, I finally got my felt all crazy stitched and am ready to now cut out my pieces.

So first I cut out some ornament shaped ones, and I turned them differently so the stitching wouldn't all just be the same. I think these would be cute on a gift, on the tree, and hanging in the window because the stitching shows from both sides so it is pretty from the inside and the outside.
Then I made a stocking and I really liked the way it turned out. But I think on the next ones I will turn them so all the stitching won't be the same. But I must admit I had fun doing this, making the stitched felt is a "no think" sort of sewing. The biggest thing is, "Do I have a filled bobbin?" Well, that's about all for this project, and I still have some felt left. So I guess I will be on the lookout for some more simple projects. I'll let you know what I find. Chat later.

In And Out

I will probably be in and out for a few days. I am fine except, I went to my eye doctor and he took one look at my eye and we then took off upstairs for a quick surgery. Something about scar tissue and a thread of something. I don't understand Doctor talk. But I am fine, my eye just gets a little tired so I stop for awhile. Just wanted everybody to know why it might be quiet for a little while. So everybody take care and I'll be back to chat very soon.

Red Hats

Anybody know what the Red Hat Society is ? I think it is just a hoot. We have quite an active group here in South Dakota. Even though I qualify by age, I don't belong because they are an active group and I wouldn't be able to keep up with them. But one day Jay and I were eating at this establishment that serves Buffet style, and a whole group (15 ?) of these ladies came in also. Now some of them had very fancy hats with feathers and all sorts of stuff. There was one lady that had on a very plain red hat, I made a comment to her that I liked her hat. So of course we got to talking and she asked me if I belonged to the group, and I explained my mobility problem. So right then she took off her hat and tried to give it to me, well of course I was taken aback by the gesture. She told me she wanted me to have it since I had admired it and this would make me one of their group. Of course I accepted then, put it on right then and there, and a big smile came to my face. We talked a couple of minutes more and then we each went our own way. I was really tickled because you just don't meet nice people like that every day. In a few minutes another lady came over and asked me if I had known the lady, I told her no, she smiled and said, "She is Kevin Costners mother." Well now you could have knocked me over with a feather, I was very surprised. It just goes to show you, you never know who might come up and start chatting with you, and if she has on a red hat her name might just be Shirley Costner 8>) Below is a photo of me wearing that special hat.

A Christmas Square

Isn't this a pretty square? I was lucky enough to be one of the testers for this square. It turned out very pretty and was so fast and easy to make. She will have it in her Etsy shop very soon. I would like to make a whole afghan of this block using all different colors for the center, wouldn't that be pretty? Make sure you stop by her shop to see what beautiful items she has, her link is below.

Sunbonnet Sue Trial Towel

I just love the towels that hang on the kitchen drawer or the fridge door handle, they are just so handy. This one is not very well made because it is just a dry run, the stitching is not very straight because I was in such a rush and wasn't so concerned how it looked. I just wanted to know if I had measured everything correctly and it would all fit. I think all the goofs are worked out of it now, so I can make some 'good' ones as gifts. I like the way the lace on her skirt fits right above the fringe, it looks cute to me. By the way, I took this photo!!!! Not bad, but I'm still learning. But Sue was very still so that helped me a lot. I'll show you the others when I get them done....IF I get them done. 8>) But I think I will. Have a good evening my friends.

I Got A Camera!!

Jay got me a camera, now if I can just learn to take photos I'll be in great shape. It is an Olympus Stylus 850 and has more buttons on it that my shirts do. Jay is so excited about it that he has me taking pictures of everything in the house just for practice. He says tomorrow we will tackle outside--help! He took this photo of my camera so I could get on here and brag....if I understood what I was bragging about it would be nice. I hope I will learn quickly so I can do some tutorials, I guess I'd better figure out what sort I want to make?? Jay says we gotta go outside now cause the light is just right. I'll let y'all know how it turns out. Have a great Labor Day!!
