Whimsical Wednesday...er, Friday

How could I have missed this article until now?

So God co-piloted a plane for Robert Scott, but Noah doesn't even get him to be a harbor pilot?

You know that you're a gamer when you buy one of these....

Seriously, I want one of these but I just can't bring myself to pay the price tag.

Mammoth Ivory D20s
For a small price of $248.00 USD, you too can own a (yes, only one) d20 die made from a tusk of an extinct Woolly Mammoth and a nice cedar and black walnut box.  They will make a die for any "Land of the Lost" or Caveman games!

Here is where you can buy them (Link)
Thank goodness that they don't come in a d6 form or I would have to buy a pair for playing Tusk!
Cheers,
Sapper

An early Wednesday Whimsy

Why did all of the kids back in the 50's got the really cool toys? Stupid hippies ruined all of the fun.

I present the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab

Not only could you get well educated in science (plus learn proper grooming and how to wear a tie), but you can also earn a keep to go to college with another Gilbert toy, the U-239 Geiger Counter
Stupid hippies made generation of helicopter parents and took away all of the fun.

Cheers,
Joe

Whimsical Wednesday & Quick Update

First, the Whimsical Wednesday moment
Schrödinger's cat conducts an experiment
Well, this will be a short update.

I still have not done much in the line in gaming other than getting in one game with Blake, Don, & Curtis in a Colonial battle of British vs Egyptians using The Sword & The Flame.  Don and I were the Egyptians and were facing equal British forces under Blake & Curtis.  Amazing, we won!  Not only did we win, but destroyed the British force (only 4 guys of 48 figs escaped off the board)...but we were pretty much bloody too.  I think we had 9 guys out of 48 figs and we passed are army morale rolls, multiple times! Unfortunately, none of us took pictures!

So, on the reading front, I finished a couple of books since my last post and now on to another book.

Finished:
1920 - The Deadliest Year for St. Louis Police by Ken Zimmerman Jr
2912 Washington and the Murder of Arthur Huddleston by Ken Zimmerman Jr

Started:
King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild

I am off work next week and plan to do some work in the basement or maybe even paint miniatures.  But as I mention before, I will be attending the lecture on Price's Raid and attending the 150th anniversary of the Pilot Knob reenactment.

Cheers,

Joe

Whimsical Wednesdays

Something I found during my travels...

This was part of a car wash, as it is not just enough to traumatize Fuffy by go through the car wash, now he has to suffer the humiliation of being washed in the public so everyone can see his sad face.
This is what I suspect it is like when it is in use

Whimsical Wednesday

Sorry I still don't have anything to post, work has been eating my time and just not a whole lot of anything has been going on with me or my hobbies.

Anyway, I leave you with these pictures to think about...

It's good to be the bear!

Whimsical Wednesday...Are you ready for the end of the world, again?

Ragnarok: One Month Left Before Viking Apocalypse Ends Life on Earth

By Hannah Osborne | IB Times Wed, Jan 22, 2014

There is just one month left before the Viking apocalypse is upon us, at which point the nine worlds of the cosmos will be destroyed in a cataclysmic event. Ragnarok, or the end of the world, will begin when the wolf, Fenrir, son of Loki, breaks out of his prison. A chain reaction will then take place, with the Midgard snake Jormungand rising from the sea and a wolf devouring the sun.

These events will accumulate in a huge battle, where the Gods, mankind and all races from the nine worlds will fight.

According to the Jorvic Viking Festival, which takes place in York every February, these events were prophesied by Odin, who had hung himself from Yggdrasill, the world tree, for nine days so he could die and be re-born with wisdom and foresight.

"The wisdom acquired by Odin allowed him to see the events of Ragnarok enabling him to plan for the end of the world, including rounding up all the Vikings heroes who died in battle to Valhalla, his great hall where they would feast and wait for the end of the world and the battle to end all battles," festival organisers explain.

When the world ends, the Sun's beams will turn to black and the weather will become treacherous: "Brothers will fight and kill each other, sisters' children will defile kinship. It is harsh in the world, whoredom rife - an axe age, a sword age - shields are riven - a wind age, a wolf age - before the world goes headlong. No man will have mercy on another," a prophetic poem says.

Normally, the Viking festival of Jolablot takes place every 22 February to mark the end of winter. However, this year it also coincides with Ragnarok. But will the world really end one month from today?

"No one can say for certain – we have only interpreted the myths as best we can. What we do know for certain is that the Vikings loved to feast and wouldn't want to miss an event like this!"

Some have even suggested Ragnarok has already happened, with prophecies being fulfilled in recent world events. In Norse mythology, it says: "Boundaries that exist shall crumble." Some have interpreted this as the global rise of social media and the apparent non-existence of internet security.

The Migard Serpent has also been linked to two giant oarfish that were washed up on a shore in California a few months ago.

The Jorvik Viking Festival is expected to attract around 40,000 people to York, with the celebrations running from 15 February.

Danielle Daglan director of the festival, said: "Ragnarok is the ultimate landmark in Viking mythology, when the gods fall and die, so this really is an event that should not be underestimated."

So don your helmets, bite your shield, and sound the horn!  We soon may have to fight side by side at the Rainbow bridge!  And to get your blood flowing...

Whimsical Wednesday – A Tribute to a King

This Whimsical Wednesday is dedicated to the Big E on his 79th birthday.

LONG LIVE THE KING!

(If you have to ask, I can’t explain…)

First off, this is a video of my favorite song by him

Next, a song by Mojo Nixon that explains why we all must praise the King

Now a video by one of the best imitators for matching the voice in my opinion, with James “The King” Brown's cover of Nirvana's classic, "Come as you are"

One more time for James "The King" Brown, with the best song that I really thinks has the spirit of the King in voice, tempo, and style
This is the best imitation I have ever seen on film and Bruce Campbell should have gotten an Oscar for his acting and voice for this role...if you get the DVD, listen to audio commentary by Bruce Campbell in character!

Andy Kaufman was allegedly the King's favorite of all of the imitators, so I must show a clip of Andy's
We follow up that video with his one by Steve Goodman that is a tribute to all of the King’s loyal knights

And here is the Jimmy Buffett's cover the of the same song

Here is a more somber song about the King from the late and great Warren Zevon (oh, how we miss your lyrics too, maestro)

Finally, I have to leave with this one last video.  It is the song that placed the golden crown of his majesty’s head with much credit to Mae Axton & Tommy Durden.  LONG LIVE THE KING!
