Possible Norovirus Outbreak Hits Thousands of Children in Germany

Image: CDC

I am not too familiar with the norovirus, so I should do some additional research. Apparently, it (or something similar) has hit thousands of children in Germany. The cause has not been definitively determined, but some of these cases have been confirmed as norovirus from food poisoning.

...the number of children that have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhea after eating food from school cafeterias and daycare centers has risen from about 4,500 to 8,400.

Dallas Requests State of Emergency Aerial Spraying to Combat West Nile Virus Outbreak

I have never been a fan of aerial chemical spraying. I remember when I was a kid in Memphis, the mosquito-spraying trucks would drive through our neighborhoods wantonly spraying chemicals to kill the mosquitoes. The neighborhood would always smell nasty for many hours after the spraying. I have no idea what chemicals I was inhaling nor the effects. Perhaps it was harmless, but perhaps it has caused side effects that I may never know. I do not trust my government to make the correct decisions when it comes to my well-being, so I am always suspicious when the government introduces chemicals into the environment for some alleged beneficial purpose.

Nevertheless, for anyone living in Dallas, Texas, you may soon be bombarded (if not already) with aerial spray as the Mayor has declared a state of emergency. The virus has already killed 10 people...

Many of those who died were in frail health and had underlying medical conditions.

“I think this is the right thing to do. I cannot have any more deaths on my conscience because we didn’t take action,” [Mayor] Rawlings said.

The city has seen 111 reported infections that caused 65 hospitalizations.

As part of this site's public service to any visitors from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I will post the information links from the Mayor's page as they are posted there.

West Nile Aerial Spraying

STAY TUNED for specific days and times aerial spraying will occur.

The Texas Department of State Health Services is working closely with Dallas-area public health and emergency management officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concerning the extremely high number of human cases of the disease in Dallas County.

“The disease poses an immediate public health threat to Dallas County. We need to use all possible tools, including aerial spraying, to fight this outbreak,” said Dr. David Lakey, DSHS commissioner. “We will support the decisions made by local officials as we work together to confront this situation.”

Aerial spraying is a very effective and safe way to kill adult mosquitoes in large, densely populated areas. For people concerned about exposure during aerial spraying, health officials suggest the following precautions:

  • Minimize exposure. Avoid being outside, close windows and consider keeping pets inside while spraying occurs.
  • If skin or clothes are exposed, wash them with soap and water.
  • Rinse homegrown fruits and vegetables with water as a general precautionary measure.
  • Cover small ornamental fish ponds.
  • Because the chemical breaks down quickly in sunlight and water, no special precautions are suggested for outdoor swimming areas.

DSHS contracts with Clarke, a private environmental products and services company, for aerial application of mosquito control products. The product is called Duet, which is labeled and approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in outdoor and residential areas. The active ingredients are in the same chemical family as products currently being used for ground spraying in the Dallas area. The product would be applied at very low dosages – less than an ounce per acre – by small, twin-engine aircrafts flying at approximately 300 feet above ground overnight.

Texas has more than 380 state-confirmed cases of West Nile illness for 2012, including 16 related deaths. Texas is on track to have the most cases of West Nile illness since the disease first emerged in the state in 2002. Humans can contract West Nile virus from a mosquito bite. The virus can cause serious illness or death.

Utah Public Health Officials Confirm Two (2) Deaths from Hantavirus!

I have not been focusing on the pandemic issues like I used to do in the past. Here's a current story about hantavirus (dated as of June 5, 2012) that is something like I would have posted without delay 2-3 years ago. Please note that the Utah Department of Health is using Blogspot to post its official news releases.

Click the link for more information on the hantavirus.

###

Two Hantavirus-related Deaths in Utah

(Salt Lake City, UT) – Utah public health officials have confirmed two deaths as a result of hantavirus exposure. The deaths occurred in Millard County and in Salt Lake County as a result of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a rare, but deadly, lung disease.

HPS is spread by breathing in dust around rodent-infested areas that contain hantavirus, and is not spread from person-to-person. This can happen when rodent urine and droppings that contain hantavirus become airborne. The average age of known cases is 35 years with an age range of 11 to 69 years. No ethnic group appears to be more at risk than another.

Activities that can put people at risk include:
• Improperly cleaning up mouse and rat urine, droppings and nests.
• Cleaning a shed or cabin that has been closed for some time.
• Working in areas where mice and rats may live (such as barns).

Although HPS is rare, infection can be prevented by avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings. Try to avoid any activities that might stir up dust around rodent-infested areas.

To safely clean up rodent urine and droppings, wear a mask, glasses, and rubber or plastic gloves. Get the urine and droppings very wet with disinfectant or a mixture of bleach and water. Allow to soak for five minutes. Use a paper towel to wipe up urine or droppings and throw the towel into the garbage. Mop the area with disinfectant or a bleach solution.

When finished, wash gloved hands with soap and water or spray a disinfectant or bleach solution on the gloves before taking them off. Wash hands with soap and warm water after removing the gloves.
The recommended cleaning solution is a mixture of 1½ cups household bleach and 1 gallon of water. A smaller amount can be made with one part bleach and 10 parts water.

Hantavirus symptoms generally begin with a fever greater than 100.5° F, muscle aches, and chills. Other common symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. Less common symptoms are dizziness or a light-headed feeling, sweating, and joint, back, chest, or abdominal pain. If you experience symptoms, contact your medical provider immediately.

Penn State Scientists Discover AAV2 Virus That Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Laboratory

The discovery of a naturally occurring virus that can kill breast cancer cells is a promising and amazing development from the scientists at Penn State. It could potentially save thousands of lives. The results were lab-based, so hopefully, these results will translate as favorably to clinical trials and other studies using this advancement in the future.

A nondisease-causing virus kills human breast cancer cells in the laboratory, creating opportunities for potential new cancer therapies, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers who tested the virus on three different breast cancer types that represent the multiple stages of breast cancer development.

Adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) is a virus that regularly infects humans but causes no disease...Researchers used an unaltered, naturally occurring version of AAV2 on human breast cancer cells...

...In tissue culture dishes in the laboratory, 100 percent of the cancer cells are destroyed by the virus within seven days, with the majority of the cell death proteins activated on the fifth day. In another study, a fourth breast cancer derived cell line, which is the most aggressive, required three weeks to undergo cell death.

Dr. Sue Rabbitt Roff Says Governments Should Consider Paying Kidney Donors

I thought I saw a Wabbitt! Unlike a cartoon though, this is some serious business.

Dr Sue Rabbitt Roff, of Dundee University, called on the health service to offer financial rewards to individuals willing to give up a kidney as a means of speeding up the rate of transplants and reducing the cost of treatments and dialysis to the NHS.

If governments legalize the sale of organs, let me guess which economic segment of the population will be affected the most by the law? Hmmm, it shouldn't take long to see that lower economic classes will be impacted the most by any future legislation, because many folks will see their organs as potential monetary assets and use them accordingly.

A kid sitting on a trust fund isn't going to sell his kidney for an iPod, but some poor sap in China will. A rich diva isn't going to sell her kidney to go to USC, but an inner city kid might consider it.

Thief Steals Laptop Containing Irreplaceable Prostate Cancer Cure Research Data

This post should serve as an example of why you should always backup your work - especially when you are working on novel cancer research. A husband and wife cancer research team left their laptop in the car while they stuffed their faces at Panera. Unfortunately, they also decided to keep their valuable (potentially life-saving) data on this non-secure laptop and of course, someone jacked the laptop.

Unfortunately, most of the data was never backed up, a mistake Shin said could be a major setback in the fight against cancer.

Some of that data can never be replicated. Other parts of that research could take up to two years to do over. That's earth shattering considering 30,000 men die in the U.S. every year from prostate cancer, meaning people could lose their lives all because of a crime.

111 Companies Have Received Waivers of Annual Limits Requirements under Obamacare's PHS Act Section 2711

What's the point of the health care reform if the employer-companies can simply get waivers for the requirements? Something seems a little fishy here, because why are these particular companies being given waivers? That doesn't sound like equal protection of the laws to me. The waiver is based on Section 2711 of the Public Health Service Act.

Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Wants a 'Reeducation' on Obama's Health Care Reform

I have not heard a lot from Secretary Sebelius over the last few months. She was all over the media map in 2009, but her plans for mass H1N1 "swine flu" vaccinations failed and she has been laying low ever since that aborted mission. I hear that she is back on the scene and using words that I would have expected to hear in old Soviet Union propaganda.

With a number of polls showing a sustained level of opposition to the Democrats’ health care reform efforts more than five months after passage, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the Obama administration has “a lot of reeducation to do” heading into the midterms.

I am not comfortable hearing Cabinet members use the word reeducation, and who does she want to reeducate?

Maybe I'm just old school, but it sounds like propaganda to me. Americans don't like Obamacare, because it is a mandated insurance bailout that will lead to medical rationing in the name of cost efficiencies.

Will FDA's Rescission of Its Endorsement for Avastin Be the Beginning of the Obamacare "Death Panels" as Predicted?

The current administration has repeatedly stated that Obamacare does not include death panels. Remixx World! has countered those statements in previous articles (see Obamacare's "Advance Care Planning Consultation" (Pages 425-430 of the Health Care Bill -- Death Planning?) or Verizon Unveils Cloud Computing Patient Information Database & Decision Support Cycle System Using CareEngine® Technology), because I simply do not believe anything that the federal government tells me these days.

Needless to say, I'm not alone in my beliefs, because
some are reporting that the decision to drop the endorsement of the anti-cancer drug Avastin was based on monetary factors (i.e., it is too expensive from the government's perspective to provide the drug).

The FDA advisory panel has now voted 12-1 to drop the endorsement for breast cancer treatment. The panel unusually cited "effectiveness" grounds for the decision. But it has been claimed that "cost effectiveness" was the real reason ahead of reforms in which the government will extend health insurance to the poorest...

During the debate, those opposed to the reforms cited Britain’s National Institute for Clinical Excellence, which decides whether new treatments should be made available on the NHS on the basis of cost effectiveness, as an example of the sort of drug rationing that amounted to a "death panel".

Plague Kills Peruvian Teenager & Infects Thirty-One (31) in Ascope Province

Two weeks ago, Remixx World! reported on a possible plague outbreak in Peru. The story I quoted in Three (3) People Contract Pneumonic Plague in Trujillo, Peru as Fears of an Outbreak Increase was a foreign language story, so I had to rely on Google's translation of the web page in order to write the blog. While I am usually confident with Google's translation, I am always worried that something will be lost in the translation. FoxNews.com has just confirmed that previous blog entry.

Peru's health minister says an outbreak of plague has killed a 14-year-old boy and infected at least 31 people in a northern coastal province.

Emerging E. coli Strain Causes Many Antimicrobial-Resistant Infections in U.S.

A new, drug-resistant strain of E. coli is causing serious disease, according to a new study, now available online, in the August 1, 2010 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

The new strain, ST131, was a major cause of serious antimicrobial-resistant E. coli infections in the United States in 2007, researchers found. This strain has been reported in multiple countries and encountered all over the United States. In the study, researchers analyzed resistant E. coli isolates collected during 2007 from hospitalized patients across the country. They identified 54 ST131 isolates, which accounted for 67 percent to 69 percent of E. coli isolates exhibiting fluoroquinolone or extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance.

“If we could discover the sources of this strain, the transmission pathways that allow it to spread so effectively, and the factors that have led to its rapid emergence, we could find ways to intervene and possibly slow or halt this strain’s emergence,” said study author James Johnson, MD, of the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.

In the past, highly virulent E. coli strains usually have been susceptible to antibiotics, while highly resistant strains have been fairly weak in terms of their ability to cause disease. The susceptible strains were easily treated even though they caused serious infections, while the resistant ones tended mostly to affect only weakened or vulnerable individuals. Now, the study’s findings suggest, the ST131 strain has appeared with a high level of virulence and antimicrobial resistance.

If this strain gains one additional resistance gene,” Dr. Johnson added, “it will become almost untreatable and will be a true superbug, which is a very concerning scenario.”

Twenty-Five (25) People Fall Ill to a Suspected Anthrax Outbreak in Orissa's Sundergarh District in India

More anthrax news since I have written previously about anthrax outbreaks in Texas deer, North Dakota beef bull and Montana bison. However in this story, the victims are people and the setting is across the vast Pacific Ocean over in India where twenty-five (25) people are ill from a suspected anthrax outbreak.

At least 25 people, including six women, and a child have fallen ill with suspected anthrax contracted from dead animals in Orissa's Sundergarh district, health official said Friday.

The people found with the infection are residents of Dukatola village and its nearby hamlets, some 500 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, chief district medical officer Bikrant Kindo told IANS.

The outbreak is believed to be caused by some villagers who ate the meat of infected animals.

Bison Test Positive for Anthrax at Flying D Ranch in Gallatin County, Montana

This anthrax report in Montana is similar to the report of anthrax reports in both a beef bull in North Dakota and deer in Texas.

###

Public Information Officer
Montana Department of Livestock

Bison Tests Positive for Anthrax at Flying D, No Repeat of 2008 Outbreak Expected

Samples from the carcass of a yearling bison heifer on the Flying D Ranch in Gallatin County has been killed by naturally occurring anthrax, according to animal health officials with the Montana Department of Livestock.

Field tests on the dead bison, found Monday near a pasture where the disease killed 287 bison two years ago, were confirmed Tuesday at the Montana Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Bozeman. The pasture has been quarantined, said state veterinarian Dr. Martin Zaluski, and the ranch is monitoring its herd to quickly identify any additional cases that may occur.

Zaluski said a repeat of outbreak in 2008, which lasted three weeks, isn’t likely.

“Given the prophylactic measures implemented by the ranch after the outbreak in 2008, we would not expect to see many animals affected by the disease,” Zaluski said.

The positive test was not entirely unexpected, Zaluski said, as anthrax is known to be in the area. Most of the bison in the 2,500-head herd have been vaccinated against the disease at least once since 2008 and in most cases twice, although the dead bison had not been vaccinated due to its young age.

Livestock producers in the immediate area are encouraged to work with their local veterinarian to learn more about risks, prevention and treatment of the disease. Anthrax vaccines are effective and relatively inexpensive.

“If your area has a history of anthrax, it’s not a bad idea to discuss prevention strategies with your veterinarian,” Zaluski said. “You need to be aware that the disease is there, just lying in the ground, and that there is no way to predict when it might surface.”

Anthrax is caused by a naturally occurring bacteria, Bacillus anthracis. Spores of the bacteria can lie dormant in the soil for decades, then become active under certain conditions, typically after climactic events such as heavy rains or flooding preceded by drought. Animals are exposed to the disease by grazing or consuming forage or water contaminated with spores.

Clinical signs of the disease include labored breathing, rising body temperature, staggering, depression, unconsciousness and convulsions. Untreated animals may die within 24-48 hours of exposure, and one or more animals are typically found dead without any recognition of early clinical signs.

A zoonotic disease, anthrax can be spread from animals to humans. Human infection usually takes the form of skin lesions and is generally the result of occupational exposure involving direct contact with infected animals or animal products such as wool, hides and horns. Montana has not had a reported case of human anthrax since 1961.

B. anthracis is fragile and easily inactivated by common disinfectants or exposure to moderate temperatures, and as such, poses virtually no risk to the food chain.

Additional information on anthrax can be found on the department's web site at http://liv.mt.gov/liv/ah/diseases/anthrax/general.asp.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reportedly Infects Nearly a Thousand People in Germany So Far in 2010

Once again, we will have to suspend belief and trust the ol' Google Translate machine, because I cannot find any news reports of this story in any English newspapers. Therefore, if the Google Translate machine is believed, then there is an outbreak of hantavirus in Germany. Check the original page in German or the translated one.

Stuttgart / Pforzheim - infection with the hantavirus are mainly in Baden-Württemberg extremely soared into the air. Currently with 736 at the State Health Department reported diseases of the Southwest is by far ahead of all other provinces, followed by Bavaria with almost 200 cases. In the first six months of sick in the southwest, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from Tuesday people especially in the Swabian Alb.

After the death of a young woman from the Pforzheimer Enzkreis in a hospital, the competent health authority is considering whether the virus was cause of death.

USDA Testifies There is a Clear Link Between Use of Antibiotics in Livestock and Drug Resistance in Humans

I am not surprised by this revelation, but I am surprised that the USDA stated it in testimony.

In testimony to a House committee on Wednesday, even the Agriculture Department, which livestock producers have traditionally relied on to advocate for their interests, backed the idea of a link between animal use of antibiotics and human health.

The Agriculture Department "believes that it is likely that the use of antimicrobials in animal agriculture does lead to some cases of antimicrobial resistance among humans and in animals themselves," said John Clifford, the USDA chief veterinarian.

Ministry of Health

Ministry of Health Prepared for Dengue Outbreak
KINGSTON (JIS)

Friday, July 23, 2010

Director, Disease Prevention and Control in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sonia Copeland, and the Ministry's Director of Environmental Health, William Broughton, discuss the contents of a flier being circulated as part of the Dengue Prevention and Control Public Education Programme. They were guests at Thursday's (July 22) JIS Think Tank Session.

Director, Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sonia Copeland, says that the Ministry is in a high state of preparedness to detect and treat Dengue Fever, should there be an outbreak.

Her statement follows the reported increase in Dengue Fever cases in a number of Caribbean territories, which has prompted the Ministryof Health (MOH), with the assistance of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to roll out a Dengue Prevention and Control Public Education programme to heighten awareness of the prevention measures.

Speaking Thursday (July 22) at a JIS Think Tank session, Dr. Copeland noted that the Ministry has heightened surveillance activities across the island. Health facilities, she states, are equipped with medication for symptomatic treatment and will be able to deal with possible complications.

Director, Disease Prevention and Control in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sonia Copeland, highlights components of the Dengue Prevention and Control Public Education Programme, as she addressed a Think Tank Session, Thursday (July 22) at the JIS Head Office, Kingston.

"The Ministry has been scaling up surveillance to detect undifferentiated fever, which they cannot attribute to any specific cause, and the Ministry of Health has been sampling specimen for patients to check for Dengue," she informed.

She noted that new clinicians in the public health system have been trained to identify signs and symptoms of Dengue and treatment protocols. The MOH Official has also highlighted the pivotal role that community participation must play in preventing the spread of the fever.

"Vector Control activity is very expensive and it is labour intensive, and that's why in many countries the shift is to intensify community participation. It is much more cost effective and sustainable to have persons take care of their immediate environment and reduce the breeding sites," Dr. Copeland noted.

The Environmental Health Department of the Ministry is working assiduously to ensure control of the breeding sites of the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. Reiterating the call for increased community participation, MOH Director of Environmental Health, William Broughton, appealed to persons to regularly inspect their surroundings and destroy any apparent breeding sites.

"People in their homes have a better idea of whats happening on the premises than somebody coming in, so we are encouraging them to search for all the possible places where mosquitoes can breed," he stated.

Mr. Broughton called on persons to practice preventive measures, such as proper storage of water and garbage disposal measures.

"If you have to store water, store it properly; cover the containers and get rid of solid wastes, especially the tyres, so we won't have any place for water to collect or mosquitoes to breed," he said.

He added that fogging of mosquitoes by the Health Departments only "gets rid of mosquitoes on wings." Persons should therefore assist the health department in finding and destroying breeding sites.

Dengue Fever is caused by a virus transmitted from the aedes aegypti mosquitoes to humans. According to the Director of Disease Prevention and Control, symptoms of the virus vary and include the sudden onset of a very high fever, headache and pain behind the eyes. Persons may also experience non-specific symptoms, such as muscle ache, joint pains and nausea.

Persons who are experiencing such symptoms are advised to visit their health care provider, so that they can be accurately diagnosed.

"When Dengue starts its like any other flu- like illness, so we have to be sure that you are not in danger or that you are not already exhibiting signs of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever," Dr. Copeland cautioned.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock syndrome are two complications of the illness.

The Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever may present with additional symptoms such as bleeding from the gum, nostrils or gastrointestinal bleeding. In the case of Dengue Shock symptoms the patient goes into shock.

"There are two countries very close to Jamaica that are seeing the more severe cases of Dengue- the Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. They are reporting deaths and they have the highest case fatality rate in the region and they are close to us, so we really have to step up our game and get the community participation that we are asking for," Dr. Copeland appealed.

Three (3) People Contract Pneumonic Plague in Trujillo, Peru as Fears of an Outbreak Increase

I happened to catch this plague outbreak in Trujillo, Peru story right before I was about to go to bed. Apparently, the pneumonic plague develops from bubonic plague where the bacteria enters the bloodstream and is transported to the lungs. You will have to trust the Google translator for this one, because the original article is not in English.

An outbreak of pneumonic plague, virulent disease with high mortality rate, was detected in Trujillo. Three patients, including a resident doctor and a medical student, whose health is serious, so the doctors are striving to save their lives.

This evil is a complication of bubonic plague, that is, that when a patient is not treated properly or promptly, it creates a generalized infection in humans and the bacterium Yersinia pestis (causing bubonic plague) spreads through blood and infects the lungs, causing pneumonic plague.

Tennessee Hosts U.S. Public Health Service Training Teams Conducting Door-to-Door Surveys on Local Water Systems in Military-Style Uniforms

Another drill that does not really seem to make sense. Why would the Public Health Service send its teams out dressed in military-style uniforms? And why does it want to know about people's private water supplies?

###

Tennessee Hosts United States Public Health Service Training
Released on Thu, Jul 15, 2010 - 4:01 pm

Local water systems to be surveyed July 18-24

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Health and Department of Environment and Conservation are hosting training activities by the United States Public Health Service July 18-24, 2010. Survey teams will conduct these training exercises in Rutherford and Wilson Counties.

“This is an important and effective program that benefits Tennesseans by helping collect information useful for improving our responsiveness in emergency events,” said Rand Carpenter, DVM, epidemiologist and public health veterinarian with TDOH.

As part of this training exercise, teams of uniformed public health officers will conduct surveys of residences and water utilities in Rutherford and Wilson Counties. Activities will include assessing the availability of public water and wastewater utilities and location of private water wells and onsite sewage disposal systems. Training team members will be dressed in military-style uniforms, and residents should not be alarmed if they see team members in their neighborhoods.

Resident participation in this project is voluntary and encouraged in order to further the Department of Health’s mission to protect, promote and improve the health of people living in, working in and visiting Tennessee. Anyone with questions or concerns about this project may contact the Department of Health at 615-741-7247.

Anthrax Confirmed in North Dakota Beef Bull & Texas Deer

These reports do not seem out of the ordinary at this point.

###

Anthrax Confirmed in North Dakota

A single case of anthrax has just been confirmed in northwestern Dickey County, where the disease has been reported in the past,” said Dr. Susan Keller, the state veterinarian. “With weather conditions almost ideal for anthrax, producers need to make sure their animals are up to date on vaccinations.”

The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at North Dakota State University confirmed the
diagnosis of anthrax in a beef bull Tuesday. It is the second case of anthrax recorded in the state this year. Last May, an animal died from anthrax in Sioux County, the first confirmed case in that area in many years.

An effective anthrax vaccine is readily available, but it takes about a week to establish immunity and must be followed with annual boosters. Keller asked producers to monitor their herds for unexpected deaths and report them to their veterinarians.

Anthrax has been most frequently reported in northeast, southeast and south central North Dakota, but it has been suspected in almost every part of the state. The state usually records a few anthrax cases every year, but in 2005, the disease killed an estimated 1,000 head of cattle, bison, horses, sheep, llamas and farmed deer and elk.

An anthrax factsheet is available on the home page of the North Dakota Department of Agriculture website at
www.agdepartment.com.

UVALDE, Texas -- Ranchers were on alert Saturday in Uvalde after a
confirmed case of anthrax was found in a white-tailed deer.

A dozen deer in all were found dead earlier
this month but only one was tested, and it tested positive for the disease.

The state is advising ranchers to make sure all their animals are vaccinated and to put medicine in their deer feed.

Anthrax is typically
spread from deer to deer by horse flies.

"They can feed on a sick animal and transmit it real easy to other animals, and it can really accelerate that a way," said Uvalde veterinarian Dr. Cecil Arnim.

In 2001, Dr. Arnim said more than
a thousand deer died in the Uvalde area from anthrax.
