NYCC schedule

I tried to put in here everything we have scheduled at the New York show. If we're not eating or on a meeting (most meetings happen during meals for us, so it's all basically always eating breaks), you'll be able to find us at our tables on Artists' Alley (L1 and L2).

Thursday, October 4th

11 AM-12PM signing at the DC booth
Do you know where the DC booth is? Can you tell us? Will you be there to hold our hands? We'll sign your comic and smile at you.

3:00 PM-3:50 PM: signing at the Dark Horse booth
This is the signing where we'll both be there. Bá will sign again at the Dark Horse booth, but this is your only chance to get me there, along with all the creative team of the Stranger Things comic (I made an convention exclusive cover for it).

Friday, October 5th

We'll be at our tables on Artists Alley most of the day. From 2PM til 6 PM for sure.

7:30 PM–9:30 PM: NETFLIX & CHILLS
(Main Stage 1D)
Meet the cast of the highly anticipated Umbrella Academy Netflix series! Let's see how wonderful these actors are, specially how much bigger than everyone else Tom Hopper (the guy who's playing Spaceboy) is.

8:30 PM: the Harvey Awards
(Shop Studios, 528, West 39th Street, Third Floor)
It's our first time ever attending the Harvey Awards, and we're not even nominated to anything, so NO PRESSURE, JUST FUN! (also, it's the only chance to catch us outside the convention center in case you don't have a badge)

Saturday, October 6th

12:00 PM-12:50 PM: THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY signing at the Dark Horse booth
Gerard Way, Gabriel Bá
WRISTBAND REQUIRED NO POSED PHOTOGRAPHY
LIMIT ONE PRINT, ONE OTHER ITEM PER PERSON
OTHER RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY—SEE STAFF FOR INFO

This is Bá's second signing at Dark Horse. It's tougher to get in because of the wristband.

1:45 PM–2:45 PM: THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY INVITES YOU TO CHECK IN TO “HOTEL OBLIVION” (Room 1A06)
After ten years, The Umbrella Academy is back in action! With the new comics series, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion kicking off and a live action series arriving on Netflix in early 2019, Dark Horse Comics is thrilled to invite fans to a conversation with series creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá as we explore the weird, wonderful world of The Umbrella Academy.
(This is a big room. Don't be shy and come talk abou Umbrella with us.)

3 PM-4 PM: Signing at the CBLDF booth
The CBLDF has our various book, and you can get them, help the good cause and get an exclusive drawing on your book while we're all together.

Sunday, October 7th

3 PM-4 PM: Signing at the CBLDF booth
Not content in signing books and helping the CBLDF one day, we're doing it again on Sunday, so come along and let us be merry together!

CBLDF party and auction at SDCC 2015

Every year, we contribute a new piece of art to the auction that takes place at SDCC to help raise funds for the CBLDF. Many of the artwork and original pieces are exhibited at the party they throw every year at the Westgate Hotel, where you have at chance to chat with many creators.

The auction itself takes place on saturday, and here are the two new pieces we did.

Wonder Twins SDCC 2015 Schedule

We'll try to keep this schedule updated in case something new comes up.

THURSDAY, July 9th

1PM - DeConnick & Fraction: Milkfed Criminal Masterminds @ Work
- Room 2
Lauren Sankovitch (Milkfed managing editor, former Marvel editor) pulls back the curtain on life at Milkfed, what a comic book editor does exactly, and which are truly the best donuts in Portland. Expect utter nonsense, a Q&A, and a parade of special guests who may drop in. Or not. Guess you'll have to be there to find out!

3PM - Dark Horse Originals - the new mainstream - Room 23ABC
Comics literature is the new mainstream, and Dark Horse Originals covers it all, from post-Depression-era America in The New Deal to the return of Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon withTwo Brothers. Bá and Moon are joined by Matt Kindt (MIND MGMT) and Colleen Coover (Bandette) to discuss pushing the boundaries of what comics can accomplish in literature.

FRIDAY, July 10th
2:30PM-3:45PM - Fábio Moon signing at the CBLDF booth (#1918)
4PM-5:15PM - Gabriel Bá signing at the CBLDF booth (#1918)

SUNDAY, July 12th
11:15PM - " Different is Cool" - Room 6DE
Eisner Award-winning Brazilian Wonder Twins Gabriel Bá (Daytripper, Umbrella Academy) and Fábio Moon (Daytripper, Casanova) share their experiences, both inside and outside the U.S. comics market. They invite young creators and readers to a discussion about how the best way to break into comics and build a career may not be by doing what everyone wants, but by doing what only you can do. An eye-opening Q&A will follow the presentation.

1:30Pm - Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá signing at the Dark Horse booth (#2615)

Casanova step-by-step

This week, both Bá and I did new original drawings for the annual CBLDF auction that takes place in San Diego during Comic Con. We took some time from our crazy-busy schedules (made even crazier by the fact that World Cup is going on just outside our studio window) and created two new images with characters we have created. TFAW, who always helps coordinate this, will make prints of the images that the artists will be able to keep and sell, so I decided to make a full color image that would make a great 10 x 17 print.
image
My first idea was to do a Sugarshock image. Everybody seems to really love those characters, and you could say that right now Joss Whedon, writer of Sugarshock and nowadays writer and director of the Avengers movies, has never been as popular. I sketched the characters on my notebook and started working on the final image, but something wasn't clicking and I wasn't happy with where I was going with the drawing. I decided to call it a day and get back to it the next morning, and I'm glad I did.
Next morning, I went looking for inspiration at one of my sources: Pinterest. I used to keep thousands of images in folders on my computer, but nowadays it's much easier to keep everything I think might inspire an illustration or a story on my Pinterest page. If you go check it out, you'll find elements of my recent CMKY stories for Vertigo, as well as research for the short Hellboy story, and many other images from across the internet that I keep in handy to mix up in my head when I'm at the drawing board.
The new wave of inspirational images made me decide to change characters, and the drawing became a Casanova image. It's easier to imagine Casanova in any situation, anywhere, with anyone. Much more pleased with this second sketch, I showed it to Bá:
"It's great", he said, "but lose the cheetah and the boat". I agreed and started working on the final piece.
image
I took pictures of the process to post on twitter, and it's a great way to see the way I was thinking visually, how I left many decisions for the inking stage, how I helped to make the characters pop by using cool darker colors on the background, how the red elements united the characters, how dripping and large expressive brushstrokes help give it a "drawing" look, a "hand-made" look.
image
After it was done, dry and ready, I scanned it, adjusted the colors on photoshop and sent it over by email. The original will be going with me to San Diego, where I shall say farewell to this painting, hoping it will find a great new home on the collection of some lucky fan.

Liberty, Killjoys and EDITORS

Two of the recent covers I've done.

The first one is for the CBLDF's Liberty Annual 2013. The editor for this anthology changes every year and this one's Scott Allie. I did this cover and Fábio also has a little story in there. It will be out in October by Image Comics.

Liberty Annual 2013

And also my variant cover for THE TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS #5, crazy mini series by Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan. Edited by Sierra Hahn and published by Dark Horse, this will also be out in October.

Killjoys #5 cover

There's a lesson to be learned here. Make friends with editors. Get to know their names, what books they edit, who they work with. If they like your work and they trust you, they'll get you cool gigs.

CBLDF auction at SDCC

Every year, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund auction takes place during SDCC. We have been doing and donating original artwork for the auction for the last three years, and this year we did again.
1-Just like everybody, Bá misses the Umbrella Academy characters and he jumped at the opportunity to draw them again, Dallas style.

2- Warming up for the next arc, I did Sasa Lisi and Zephyr Quinn from our book Casanova. Pa-ZOW!

The nice people from TFAW even take the artwork we, and several other artists, contribute and make sketchcards for us to give out for free and help promote the auction. If you stop at their booth (#5625) you can get their latest batch of sketches (you can see preview images of the drawings from all the artists here, here and here), ours included. We'll have the sketchcards from our drawings at our booth as well (#1320), so stop by.
Both images will be auctioned off July 14th in room Sapphire AB at the Hilton Bayfront, starting at 8:00 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting the First Amendment rights of the comics community!

SDCC auction for the CBLDF

As explained here and here, once again we're participating in the CBLDF auction that takes place every year during SDCC in San Diego. We were thrilled to be able to use characters we grew up reading, and by the scenes we did, you can see when we got hooked up on super heroes.

Cyclops and Marvel GirlWeapon X
Both our booth (1320) and the CBLDF booth will have signing cards of those images, but imagine how great would the original look on your wall.

See you in San Diego!
