- Thanks to authors such as Meier-Graefe and groundbreaking modern artists like Picasso, Franz Marc, and Kandinsky, in less than fifty years El Greco was eventually proclaimed to be one of the greatest painters ever. (en)
- For Velasquez, so little disposed to be influenced by any other artist, however great, did not disdain to learn of El Greco. He occasionally borrowed from the latter's compositions, and meanwhile was permanently affected by El Greco's use of colour – his superb blacks and whites and his subtle tones of rose and blue. (en)
