Week 13 & 14

Assalamualaikum & hello dear homosapiens,

In week 13, it was our last class with Miss Emy and we had some revision & did some exercises about normalization & SQL. Even though it was a short exercise, still I got some idea on how to answer the question and  I knew how to answer on anomalies question (which I feel a bit confusing at first). Oh yeah, on this week, we have to submit our group project.

That's all from me. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)

Week 11 & 12

Assalamualaikum and hello peeps :)

In week 11, we had about an hour lecture. Yeah, 1 Hour. Basically Ms. Emy continue what we had learn last week, which is SQL. And today, yeah today, I learnt SELECT statement in one table type. Okay, there's a lot of statement that need to be understand. For example, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, WHERE and also HAVING. I assume these are quiet easy and understandable. Lucky for CIS student because we already have a basic programming. At least, we don't have any problem in writing SQL (hopefully I'm not the only one who think about this). Okay fast forward, again, we were going back to Normalization. Let's just say that Normalization & also Relational Algebra are quiet difficult to understand. Okay, Ms Emy showed some tips and tricks on how to change from unnormalization form -> 1NF -> 2NF -> 3NF. Well that's all I guess.

In week 12, today we learnt the last topic which is SELECT STATEMENT in Multiple Table. A very short lecture (30 minutes only!). Such a short lecture and short discussion about our Assignment 2. Okay, I realize that I'm still confuse in normalization and foreign key.

That's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum.

Week 9 & 10

Assalamualaikum and good evening :)

In week 9, after one week break from Deepavali holiday, we came back for class. More to recap again on what we have learned and answered for DIM Assignment. Miss Emy show to us the common mistake made by us and solution to every question in DIM Assignment. Through out the class for this week, Miss Emy taught us again on how to do the correct way of ERD and some exercise about Relational Algebra.

In the lab for this week, we were taught by the GA on how to do SQL. SQL - Structured Query Language. It is a database language, coding language. Much more easy to write it because it use a simple English language. e.g - create table EXHIBITION. Simple yet understandable.

In week 10, programming week I guess. Learning SQL - Structured Query Language! This language allow us to creaate database and relation structures. There many SQL statement but for newbies like us, Miss Emy taught us the basic and simple statement to use in creating database.When it comes to programming, I can accept it with an open heart. Programming is my passion. We learnt some format, constraint and did some exercises.

For this week's lab, we had some exercise on SQL and practice on using other SQL statement. We had an exercise where we need to convert from RA (Relational Algebra) to SQL.

That's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)

Week 7 & 8

Assalamualaikum and good evening :)

In week 7, Miss Emy continue teaching about normalization. It's more to formula on how to normalize the table. It's quite interesting on how she taught us today - to identify which normalization form we need to use. For example;

  • Unormalize form -> 1NF (remove repeating group)
  • 1NF -> 2NF (remove partial dependency)
  • 2NF -> 3NF (remove transitive dependency)
More like a formula on how to normalize the table, isn't it easy? At least I can understand when should I remove the redundancy so on and identify which stage of normalization right now. After settling all the normalization exercise, we were taught by Miss Emy about Relational Algebra. Oh yeah LOGIC topic, which I really love :) It is quite tricky actually to understand and to translate a statement into RA symbols. At the end of the class, we did some exercises. From there I could understand a little bit about RA. Well, basically more on projection, selection, union, intersection and natural join.

In week 8, okay no class. It's Deepavali week and everyone went back to their hometown. So no class and lab for this week.

That's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)

Week 5 & 6

Assalamualaikum and hallluuu :)

In week 5, again with no classssssss!! Miss Emy had some other important stuff to do in this week so see yaa next week!

It's week 6!! Back to the class after 2 weeks off :) Plugging my fuse back to the system. Today Miss Emy taught about Normalization (update anomalies, insert anomalies and delete anomalies), Relational Scheme, Dependency Diagram and Normal Form. Actually I still can't get the concept of Normalization but it's okay, Relational Scheme, Dependency Diagram and Normal Form are okay so far to me.

Relational Scheme - identify which primary key, composite primary key and foreign key

eg. STUDENT(s_id, s_name)

      CLASS(c_id, c_name, s_id) //can't circle the s_id

*primary key - underline
*foreign key - circle

Dependency Diagram

- identify which attributes depend on each other
*partial dependency - underline
*transitive dependency - no underline

Th at's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)

Week 3 & 4

Assalamualaikum and hello :)

In week 3, we had 2 session, 2 hours class and 2 hours replacement class. We learnt Chapter 3 which is all about ERD - Entity Relationship Diagram. To be honest, my friends and I were not in the class for the first session because we were embarrassed to come into the class - we thought that the class supposed to be start at 12.30pm but noppeee. So, we study in a room next to a class where Miss Emy was teaching. We came in during second session, where all the students were supposed to present their group project - ERD. But from their presentation, it's understandable even though  I wasn't in the first session. It's quiet understandable from the diagram itself and I can differentiate between the entity, attributes, relationship, primary key and foreign key. I'd like to suggest for more this kind of group project like drawing a diagram/mind map (because I'm a visual learner).

this is how ERD looks like.

In week 4, no classssssss! It's Awal Muharram holiday, public holiday and yeah my birthday in Hijri Calendar.

That's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)

Week 1 & 2

Assalamualaikum and hello earthlings :)

New semester, new subjects, new goals and new challenge are coming. In week 1, the class is cancelled because of the public holiday (most of my course-mates weren't back to UTP yet actually) and Ms Emy had some important stuff to do. I'm expecting to have a great semester with this course, Data and Information Management because I do like something that is related to data management and what's interesting is Miss Emy! Our FOP1 lecturer back then when I was in foundation first semester.

In week 2, well actually this is my-kind-of-hectic week because I was involved in iFest. But I managed to come to the class in the midst of my hectic-ness. As usual, the first class was all about introduction. From the course outline to Chapter 2, Database Environment. We were introduced about database, how does file-approach works and database-approach works, the DBMS which stand for Database Management System, the Pros and Cons of using DMBS. The way that Miss Emy taught us is quite easy to understand, Alhamdulillah. I managed to grasp the difference between file-approach(which is not an efficient way due to data duplication) and database-approach(shared data).

Fast forward, we learned the next chapter which is Database Environment. Miss explained about what is ANSI-SPARC architecture, which consist of three levels, External Level, Conceptual Level and Internal Level. She did taught us about the difference between these three levels, data model, database language, data independence and conceptual modeling.

That's all for today. Bye and Assalamualaikum :)
