Picking up those brushes again.

Hi and welcome to the occasional mutterings of Dave Doc, a military modeller and some time gamer. Gaming and model making has given me a real education, History & Geography(obvious really), Artistry, Politics, Economics, Logistics, Project Management -you try building miniature armies without the last 3.

I will use the blog to record my creations & the odd occasion I actually do some gaming.

I have always been inspired by the aesthetic side of gaming. Playing on well constructed terrain using excellently painted units is always a joy.

Gaming - Sudan . A last run out

This weekend saw a run out for a small portion of the Sudan collection .the Egyptian army was sent to quell a rebellion . Now if you know you history, you will know where this goes 😆.

The table was set up at 16x6 with the column having to travel across it to the rebellious village. What could possible go wrong .

The Bashi Bazooks scout ahead

Gendarmes lead the colum off .

They actually look pretty organised!

The village openly displays its allegiance.

Dervish riflemen appear in rocks .

The Egyptian 4th Infantry took the full force and held a first round of melee , but the Dervish Emir brought inn yet more forces wrapping around the square.

The 4th Egyptian were wiped out as the square face collapsed with Martins epic dice rolls .

The flank guard of the Egyptian camel corps formed its own square . It would later be annihilated by a Dervish ambush

The village remained in revolt  great fun game .

This will be the last run out of this collection as I have made decision to have a major thin out to enable me to progress onto new projects . Some parts will indeed be kept and redeployed to the Hindu Kush . The rest will be available via Colonel Bills in due course .

Building this collection has been a real joy over the last 11 years - and I must admit the building of these is the real joy for me . It has figures from every manufacturer who has done Sudan stuff. It has conversions and scratch built stuff too. I have played all the huge games it was designed for . It’s been to major shows , and in the magazines , as well as taken it to a major  film studios to use in a HBO documentary. It’s time to release it into the wild .

Gaming - The Soudan

I have just had a fantastic 4 days of gaming with The League of Extraordinary Kriegspeilers . Steve had organised a campaign system and players and with a combination of collections of troops the Mahdists being mine  and and using Steve’s superb terrain . 5 great battles fought with great spirit and lots of laughter.

Here are just a few pictures - as I was so busy all the time I forgot to take loads . Some are Steve’s.

NWF / Sudan - Ghurkas

Time for a little revisit to the colonial period . This time it is the full unit for my Ghurkas

They will do duty on the NWF of course , but also they be deployed to Sudan this summer as part of my Indian Army forces . For Sands of Sudan they will be a 48 figure battalion , plus skirmish company -18 figures

The figures are from the Perry Victorias Little Wars range - pretty clean and unfussy - simple to paint .

For the smaller NWF adventures I think they will make 2 x 24 battalions , plus skirmishers .

I thought I had some suitable sabot bases for the skirmishers , but it turns out I don’t , so it’s a little order to Warbases coming on .

The first of the NWF frontier opposition in the form of Old Glory Pathans are on the desk - amongst a host of other things of course .

Sudan - Ghurka

Ok this is a bit of a “what if” addition for the Sudan . I had picked some of Perry Victorias Little Wars Ghurka figures a few years ago so time to get some paint on them . The Ghurka of course didn’t deploy to the Sudan but my take is that otheIndian army units did so it’s a possibility .

In addition the will of course do duty for the NWF nicely too . I have even ordered some Old Glory Pathans to create a small force for it .

These are the initial test paint skirmish group . 6 skirmishers . Plenty more to come

Sudan - new command Sir Garnet Wolsley & Sidney Ruff Diamond

It’s a return to dusty trails time . I have a few things to add to the Sudan collection over the winter so here are the first of them .

I was reminded I had a couple of figures in the lead pile after a FB forum post , so I went delving into lead pile .

These are the WI Heroes in miniature limited editions , first up Sir Garnet Wolsley, ideal for leading your Victorian adventures . Sir Sidney Ruff Diamond from Carry on up the Khyber has also made an appearance

Other plans for the Sudan are Egyptian limber set and Ghurka rifles battalion - in my mind the could have deployed as part of the Indian Army - plus they can be used of course for some North West Frontier action inn due course .

Gaming - Sands of Sudan

It’s been a while since this collection had a proper large game so last weekend saw an opportunity to get together a bunch of friends and re fight the campaign to relieve Gordon who is besieged in Khartoum. I have use of old friend Gerry’s massive tables  , which would allow for a game with the whole collection using the two 24x6 tables. I used mats created by Tiny Wargames to overlay the tables with some hills under and then a whole load of scatter terrain. I also made use of the gap between tables and made up a 4 foot long river board to drop onto the gap which we could use as the Nile. The game would be played over 3 days with 2 umpires playing the Mahdists and 4 imperial players .

The 9th Bengal deploy

The Mahdists come crashing in

The 19th Hussars are heavily outnumbered by Mahdi’s cavalry

The Cameron Highlanders Commander orders red coats to be worn

Khartoum is in sight

Major Kitchener is sent to scout ahead to find a route through

The Naval Brigade deploy

The city walls are under pressure and the Nile is falling

The city garrison prepares to sally forth as the relief columns approach.

Kitchener finds a way through to the city gates

The first of relief force arrives in the nick of time as the garrison holds off a final assault. Gordon is saved . Though as Redvers Buller said “not sure the man was worth the camels!”

A thoroughly enjoyable 3 full days of gaming was had . We will do it again .
