Important: This feature is gradually rolling out to Gmail and may not be available to you yet.
In the Gmail search bar, you can ask natural language questions or key phrases to quickly find information within your inbox, such as "When is my flight to Hawaii?" or "Find the latest Cymbal Team Meeting notes." Based on your emails, Gmail then generates an AI Overview that can:
- Give you the key fact or summarize information directly above your search results.
- Synthesize information scattered across multiple emails to provide a complete answer.
- Save you time, so you don't have to open and read through individual messages.
What you need
Important: This feature is only available in the US and in English.
To get an AI Overview in Gmail search:
- You need an eligible Google AI plan:
- Turn on smart features in your account.
- Use Gmail in a web browser on your computer.
Get an AI Overview of your search results
Important: If you use search operators, like is:unread or from:, you don’t get an AI Overview. Learn how to refine searches in Gmail.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- In the search box at the top, enter a natural language question or a key phrase.
- On your keyboard, press Enter.

Learn how AI Overview in Gmail search answers your questions
- When you search, Gmail first finds the most relevant emails. An AI Overview is then generated using the information from those emails to provide a direct summary or answer to your question. It leverages your email content to save you time, and eliminates the need to review individual messages.
- To send feedback about an AI Overview, select Good suggestion
or Bad suggestion
next to the overview.
- Your emails are protected by the same security and privacy commitments as the rest of Gmail. To control the use of your data for this and other AI-powered features, update your Google Workspace smart feature settings.
Turn off AI Overview in Gmail search
Important: If you turn off smart features, it also turns off other AI-powered Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel.
- On your computer, go to Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings
See all settings.
- Under the "General" tab, scroll to "Google Workspace smart features."
- Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace.
- Click Save.
