Introduction
It's not rare to try to take screenshots of Japanese visual novels or RPG Maker games just to see how pressing F12 does nothing—or worse, it restarts the game AND still doesn't take a screenshot—so here are two ways to get screenshots from those games on Steam without uploading them as artwork.

Important note: Replace the screenshot button on the Steam client with F10 or any other button not used by the client or the RPG Maker engine.
The easy way that works 80% of the time
Go to the game's properties and add --in-process-gpu in the "launch options" field. Close the window, and now it should work. It also grabs the Title Bar in some games, so it's up to you to edit it out or post the screenshot as it is.

The hard way that always works but is a pain in the ass
This method is for those cases when the easy way doesn't work or makes the game too unstable to play comfortably. You'll need an image editor (Photoshop, GIMP, etc.), a game you can take screenshots with without issues (99% of free games on Steam should do the trick), and some patience.

The first thing you need to do is make three folders: one named "screenshots" (all in lowercase), another one named "thumbnails" (again, all in lowercase), and a third one with the game's ID. I'm going to use Last Heroes as an example, so the folders should look as follows:

Important Note: Using an empty folder is heavily recommended to avoid any potential mistakes. Also, the name of the "screenshots" and "thumbnails" folders should always be lowercased.

Next, press Windows+shift+S to open the clipping tool to get a screenshot of the game saved on the clipboard. Pressing alt+Print Screen also does the trick, but you'll have to remove the title bar in the next step.

Open a new file in the image editor of the size of the screenshot you have in the thumbnails (image editors usually set the size automatically). Paste the image in the new canvas and save it in the "screenshots" folder. I recommend using numbers to name them so the first screenshot is "1", the second "2", and so on. That way, they are easier to identify (you'll see why later).

Now resize said screenshot so the width is 200px (the height doesn't matter as long as it keeps the aspect ratio of the original pic) and save it in the "thumbnails" folder. Make sure they have the same name as the original pic, or this won't work.

Repeat this process until you get all the screenshots you want. Then, put the thumbnails folder inside the screenshot folder, and right after that, the screenshots folder inside the game's ID folder (in this case, 370710)

Here comes the fun part: finding where Steam stores the screenshots. To do so, look for a game you've previously taken a screenshot from, right-click on any screenshot, and then click "Show on Disk".

Once you get there, backtrack until you're in the "remote" folder (You'll know you're in the correct folder because you'll see a bunch of folders with numbers inside). Drop there the numbered folder in which the game's screenshots are stored and restart Steam.

All that's left to do is restart Steam and wait a few seconds. If the new screenshots don't appear, open any game you can take screenshots from to force Steam to detect them. Now you can upload it as if you've pressed F12.
Wrapping up
That's all! I hope you find the guide helpful. Feel free to post any question you have if something is not clear, and follow my Steam Curator page if you're looking for NSFW games to play =D

I've never used Irfanview, but it should work fine as long as it has an option to resize images

I'm guessing that the "Irfanview" image editor is fine to use as well for this, right? I often use it for image cropping and so forth purposes after all and have used for such thing for years without fail.
