Getting Comanche 4 working on Win10 x64 - The easy way

I've avoided installing this game for the longest time on the basis that it seemed like people had such a hard time to get it running on Windows 10 x64. But today on June 20th 2023 I finally decided.. to just do it..
Turns out, it was much easier than I expected!

So here is my very simple guide on how to get it running—or at least the way I got it running—quick simple and painless!

Step One

Install the Game
Duh.

Step Two

Download DGVoodoo2[dege.freeweb.hu]
Note: The version I used for this was 2.73 but I recon even the latest version would work just fine.

Step Three

Extract the following files from the rar/zip;

D3D8
D3D9
D3DImm
DDraw
dgVoodoo.conf
dgVoodooCpl.exe

Note: You might not need *all* these files but I'd rather believe in better safe than sorry.

And paste them directly into the Comanche main folder.
( steamapps\common\Comanche 4 )

Step Four

Open dgVoodooCpl.exe and set the desired resolutions and stuff.
My personal settings;

General Tab

Windowed

Glide Tab

Onboard Ram 12mb
Resolution 1920x1080
MSAA 8x
Uncheck 3dfx Watermark

DirectX Tab

VRAM 1024 mb
Force Anisotropic 16x
Resolution 1920x1080
MSAA 8x
Uncheck dgVoodoo Watermark

Step ???? = PROFIT!

Start the game and enjoy!

Changing ingame resolution won't break your game so don't worry about setting it—ingame—to 1240x1080. DGVoodoo will still force the resolution to whatever you put it to.

While I can't exactly assist you with this, I'd like to point you in the direction of https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Comanche_4 --> Could it be related to "1600x1200 resolution crash" hmm.. I'm not sure. Are you in Windows 11 or Windows 10? I wrote this for Windows 10 myself ( It'll be a cold day in hell when I install Win11 ) and yes, for a lot of older games you will need to install old protocols like DirectPlay.

Wish I could provide more of an assistance to you.

I did everything what this guide says but the game still doesn't even start. Upon hitting Play, Windows asks me to install "DirectPlay" and restart the system, which I did... more than once and to no avail

it did not crash the game but the dgVoodoo program while it was open and deleted the starting exe of it. think the reason is that i activated windows defender so it scans soemtimes for stuff hours befor that happend. xD

You're saying that Windows Defender either crashed, or trashed the game? If 3dfx doesn't work you may need something else like.. I forgot what it's called offhand but some 3dfx thingy!

think i will try out other 3dfx card optiions... as i was writing this the voodo program closed and then disapeared out of steam comanche folder D:

ok, then i have to give it a try. had only one crash about something with sound. will see if something happens with more xD

You can try but I don't think it'll actually use more. I'm not entirely certain, but it's unlikely to crash your game or anything.

can i use more than 1024mb VRAM in directx tab?
