Collectible Achievements (Audio Diaries/Power to the People)
-Rapture Historian:
"Find 100 Audio Diaries."

In BioShock 2 there are a total of 129 Audio Diaries. So it's okay to miss 29 and still get the achievement, but I still highly suggest to search everywhere for as many diaries as possible.

For all Audio Diary locations, follow the guide below:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=183129237
I do not own this guide, it belongs to the user CityofRapture246.

-Upgraded a Weapon:
"Upgrade a weapon at a Power to the People Station."

For this achievement simply find one of the Power to the People stations and choose an upgrade. This achievement is basically impossible to miss.

-Fully Upgraded Weapon:
"Install the third upgrade to a weapon."

Each of the weapons in BioShock 2 has three upgrades. Simply use Power to the People stations to equip three weapon upgrades onto a single weapon. For example, upgrade the Rivet gun at Ryan Amusements twice and then at Pauper's Drop once for the achievement. Can be gotten with any weapon.

-All Weapon Upgrades:
"Find all 14 Power to the People weapon upgrades in the game."

There are 14 stations located throughout the game. You will need to apply the various upgrades to your weapons for this achievement. You can only apply one upgrade to a weapon at each station. Make sure you check all corners of each area as they are rather easy to miss.

Power to the People Stations by level:
  • 0 - Adonis Luxury Resort
  • 0 - Atlantic Express Depot
  • 2 - Ryan Amusements
  • 3 - Pauper's Drop
  • 2 - Siren Alley
  • 2 - Dionysus Park
  • 2 - Fontaine Futuristics
  • 1 - Persephone
  • 2 - Inner Persephone

Note: There aren't enough Power to the People machines to fully upgrade every single weapon in the game.

Here is a guide for all their locations that I used for the achievement:
I do not own this guide, it belongs to GamesRadar[www.gamesradar.com]

Happy Hunting!
Plasmid Based Achievements
-Bought a Slot:
"Purchase one Plasmid Slot or Tonic Slot at a Gatherer's Garden."

After unlocking the Incinerate! Plasmid you can use it to melt some ice in Ryan Amusements and access a machine selling a Tonic Slot. This will get you the achievement, although you can get this achievement at the majority of the Gatherer's Garden machines throughout the game.

-Max Plasmid Slots:
"Fully upgrade to the maximum number of Plasmid Slots."

At Gatherers Gardens you can buy what are called Plasmid Slots with ADAM. They are relatively cheap - the first ones are about 40 but go up to 70 ADAM in later levels. The best way of doing this is to check the Gatherers Garden as early as possible in a mission and buy any available and double check it before the end of the mission. There is a total of 5 purchasable plasmid Slots (8 in total).

Please note that the last Plasmid Slot is story related and unmissable.

-Fully Upgraded a Plasmid:
"Fully upgrade one Plasmid to the Level 3 version."

This achievement requires you to get any Plasmid to level 3 by using ADAM at Gatherers Gardens. Higher tier Plasmids will start to appear in later levels of the game and level 3 ones, generally won't appear until at least Fontaine Futuristics, however Cyclone Trap can be got to level 3 earlier.

Cyclone Trap can be got to level 3 at the Gatherers Garden in Dionysus Park. This will cost 240 ADAM for both level 2 and 3.

-All Plasmids:
"Find or purchase all 11 basic Plasmid types."

For this achievement, you will need all 11 basic Plasmid types purchased or unlocked on a single playthrough. You will either be given them as a gift or have to buy them from a Gatherer's Garden. You only need to own one level for each Plasmid, buying all three levels of a single Plasmid will not count for this achievement.

The 11 Plasmids and locations:

Gifts:
  • Electro Bolt - Gift, Adonis Luxury Resort level

  • Hypnotize - Gift, Pauper's Drop level (If you miss it can be bought for 60 ADAM in Siren
    Alley)

  • Security Command - Gift, Siren Alley level (If you miss it can be bought for 30 ADAM in Dionysus Park)

  • Telekinesis - Gift, Atlantic Express Depot level

  • Summon Eleanor - Gift, Persephone level
Bought from Gatherers Gardens:
  • Incinerate! - Bought, Ryan Amusements level (story, 90 ADAM)

  • Cyclone Trap - Bought, Pauper's Drop level (60 ADAM)

  • Decoy - Bought, Pauper's Drop level (60 ADAM)

  • Winter Blast - Bought, Pauper's Drop level (60 ADAM)

  • Insect Swarm - Bought, Siren Alley level (60 ADAM)

  • Scout - Bought, Siren Alley level (40 ADAM)
Hacking Based Achievements
-Master Hacker:
"Hack 30 machines at a distance with the Hack Tool."

Hack any of the machines listed for the achievement below and reach a total of 30 machines hacked with the darts and you will get the achievement. This achievement isn't too difficult and can be gotten with any of the dart ammunition for the Hack tool, including the auto hack darts.

-Prolific Hacker:
"Hack one of each kind of machine."

The machines you will need to hack are:
  • Circus of Value
  • Door Locks (Story)
  • El Ammo Bandito
  • First Aid stations
  • Safes
  • Security Bots
  • Security Cameras
  • Security Turrets
Once you hack all of these once the achievement will pop.

-Look at You, Hacker:
"Kill 50 enemies using only hacked Security."

This achievement requires you to kill any enemies with either hacked Bots, Turrets or Bots from hacked Cameras. You need a total of 50 kills from these devices.

Below is a really useful farming mechanism:

I do not own this video, it belongs to VidGamiacUnlocked. Don't forget to like the video if you found it helpful.
Research Based Achievements
-One Research Track:
"Max out one Research Track."

Simply max out one research track using the camera. I would recommend getting the Thuggish Splicer done first as this enemy is only available for research in the mission you get this camera and will not spawn in later missions. It is also an easy enemy group to research.

-Research Master:
"Complete all research on every subject in Rapture."

This achievement is very time consuming and can be quite fiddly as certain enemies stop spawing in later levels so do this as early as possible! I got all research by the end of Fontaine Futuristics.

There are 9 research subjects in BioShock 2:
  • Thuggish Splicers
  • Leadhead Splicers
  • Brute Splicers
  • Spider Splicers
  • Houdini Splicers
  • Big Daddies (Including Elite Bouncers, Bouncers, Rosies, and Rumblers)
  • Big Sisters
  • Big Daddy (Alpha Series)
  • Secruity (Including Cameras, Bots, and Turrets)

Summary Note: Some enemies will stop appearing at certain points in the game, preventing the player from ever researching them again. It is suggested the player researches as much as possible as early as possible. Example: The Thuggish Splicer stops appearing after Delta leaves Pauper's Drop.

TIPS: You can load up earlier saves to continue gathering research and you can also track research by pressing 'M' on the tape icon on the right hand side.

For futher info and notes on when enemies stop spawing, please see:

Little Sister Based Achievements
-Dealt with Every Little Sister:
"Deal with every Little Sister."

Throughout the game (until Fontaine Futuristics) there will be a certain amount of Little Sisters in each level. On the pause screen, you can see how many at the bottom. First, kill their Big Daddy and then collect ADAM - if you want to - and either Rescue or Harvest them by taking them to a vent.

After dealing with the three in Fontaine, if you have done all the other Sisters the achievement will pop. Harvesting Little Sister or Rescuing them does not affect the achievement. However, I recommend saving them for the achievement below.

-Savior:
"Save every Little Sister and spare Grace, Stanley and Gil."

For this achievement deal with every Little Sister like above but you will have to Rescue them all and not Harvest any! Furthermore, throughout the game, you will meet three different characters that you will have to spare and not kill for the achievement. These characters are Grace Holloway - Stanley Poole - Gil Alexander. They will all hinder you in various levels but never kill them at the end of their levels.
~~Ungrouped Misc. Achievements~~
Below are the ungrouped, misc. achievements for BioShock 2.
Unbreakable
-Unbreakable:
"Defended yourself against the Big Sister without dying."

This achievement is relatively straight forward. The first Big Sister you can kill is after buying the Incinerate! Plasmid in Ryan Amusements. After that one they will come every 3 Little Sisters you deal with. On easy difficulty, this is, well, easy. Furthermore, if Vita-Chambers are disabled, you can’t miss this achievement apparently.
Grand Daddy
-Grand Daddy:
"Defeat 3 Big Daddies without dying during the fight."

If you're starting out on easy this shouldn't be an issue. You need to fight three Big Daddies without dying. You can use Security Bots, Turrets or hypnotize Splicers to help you take down a Big Daddy. Once you have taken down one Big Daddy save your game and move onto the next. If you are playing with the Vita Chambers off you shouldn't have to worry about re-spawning by mistake.

If you are attempting this on hard you may have a tough time taking down a single Big Daddy. Make sure you have plenty of Health and EVE, using Winter Blast with the Drill seems to be the most effective way to kill a Big Daddy. Continuously freeze him while you attack.
Against All Odds
-Against All Odds:
"Finished the game on the hardest difficulty level."

Simply, select Hard on starting a new game and play from the first mission to the end of the game, on Hard difficulty. Self-explanatory really.
Big Brass Balls
-Big Brass Balls:
"Finished the game without using Vita-Chambers."

For those of you who are unsure what this is asking for, simply complete the game without dying. Once you start the game you can turn the Vita-Chambers off through the option menu. Doing this will stop you from making a mistake and using the chambers. Make sure you save on a regular basis as it will be your only restart point.
Big Spender
-Big Spender:
"Spend 2000 Dollars at vending machines."

This achievement is very easy as money is everywhere in this game. You will be buying ammo often (especially on harder difficulties) so should get this should come naturally really.

El Ammo Bandito and Circus of Value both count towards the achievement.
Master Gatherer
-Master Gatherer:
"Gather 600 ADAM with Little Sisters."

For this throughtout the game just do as many gatherings as possible and you will be garunteed this achievement. It's gathered over the game and not in one gathering so just play and gather as much as possible.

A Little Sister can gather 40 ADAM from each body or 60 ADAM using the "Proud Parent" tonic.
Master Protector
-Master Protector:
"Finish a Gathering with no damage and no one getting to the Little Sister."

This maybe be a little difficult until you find the right spot. People suggest Ryan Amusements as the best area. As you enter "Journey to the Surface", you will have to harvest ADAM from a body in a open room. You can hack the turret and place Rivet Traps on the floor and around the doorways. Once you have everything setup, place the sister down to collect ADAM. You can now back up into the corner and pick off splicers as they flood the room.

You can also quick save and quick load to keep trying over and over.
Counterattack
-Counterattack:
"Kill an enemy with their own projectile."

Using telekinesis grab a thrown projectile and throw it back at the enemy. You can either do this against a Splicer or any other enemy which throw projectiles such as grenades or rockets.

Can also be gotten against a rocket turret. Can be gottten from Ryan Amusements and onwards.
Trap Master
-Trap Master:
"Killed 30 enemies using only Traps."

This achievement requires you to kill any enemy type with traps. The easiest way I found was to shoot rivet traps on floors and walls in gathering areas and even easier, firing the traps onto Splicers, killing them. This method still counts towards the achievement.

Later in the game you will unlock other weapons like Proximity Mines and Trap Spears as well as being able to buy upgrades to Plasmids that let you place traps from them.
9-Irony
-9-Irony:
"Paid your respects to the founder of Rapture."

During the third mission, "Ryan Amusements", can be found a robot of Andrew Ryan which when pressing a red button in front of the desk he sits at, will start talking. Behind him, next to a filing cabinet, can be found a golf club. Use telekinesis on the club and throw it at his head. This will unlock the achievement.
~~Protector Trials DLC~~
-Litmus Test:
"Earned 6 stars in the Protector Trials"

This can be gotten after accessing the Protector Trials through the main menu, under Extras. Complete any trials you want to, until you have earned a total of 6 stars, and the achievement will unlock.

(e.g. two of the 3 star challenges will unlock the achievement, but so will playing two 1 stars and two 2 star challenges.)

-Acid Test:
"Earned 18 stars in the Protector Trials"

In the protector trials, earn a total of 18 stars. (half of the total stars in the DLC.)

-Trial by Fire:
"Earned 36 stars in the Protector Trials"

For this just earn all 36 stars in the Protector Trials. This will unlock Bonus Trials.

-Enemy of the Family:
"Earned an A rank in all Protector Trials"

This achievement requires you to get at least an A rank in all Protector Trials. This doesn't include Bonus Trials and an A+ rank in some, or all, will still give the achievement.

-Perfect Protector:
"Collected 100% of the ADAM in a single Protector Trial."

For the little sister to accquire 100% of the ADAM she must not be grabbed by any enemies. The best way to do this is by placing lots of traps if possible and staying close to her. The easiest map, accourding to the Interent, is the bonus trial in `The Adonis Baths`. I however already had the achievement before reaching this point so haven't tested this.

-Get A Bigger Bucket:
"Collect at least 50% of the ADAM available in all Protector Trials."

For this you need to collect at 50% of all the ADAM in the DLC. Meaning its not in each trial but the entire total amount of ADAM in the DLC. This will come over time.

-Guardian Angel:
"Complete all bonus Protector Trials."

After completing all other Trials and earning all 36 stars you will unlock bonus Protector Trials. Complete all these for the achievement.
~~Minerva's Den DLC Achievements~~
Story Achievements (Unmissable)

-Login:
"Reach Rapture Central Computing Operations."

-Root Access Granted:
"Reach Computer Core Access."

-SUDO:
"Wrest control of The Thinker from Reed Wahl."

-Logout:
"Escape Minerva's Den."

Other Achievements:

-ADAM Addict:
"Resolve all the Little Sisters in Minerva's Den."

This achievement is rewarded for rescuing or harvesting all six Little Sisters in the DLC. There is three in Minerva's Den and three in Operations. You do not need to do any gatherers for the achievement.

Note: One of the Little Sister in Operations spawns after a Big Daddy fetches her from a vent. So don't kill the Big Daddy until he gets the Sister.

-Lancer Killer:
"Kill a Lancer Big Daddy."

This achievement will probably be your first in the DLC. Simply battle and kill any of the Big Daddy's in the DLC.

-Garbage Collection:
"Destroy all 10 Vacuum Bots in Minerva's Den."

There is ten Vacuum Bots in the DLC. Destroy them all for the achievement. There is five in Minerva's Den and five in Operations. Must be done in a single playthrough. Their locations follow:

Minerva's Den:
  • After the first Gatherer's Garden on the way to Porter's office, turn left.
  • In McClendon Robotics, on the product display line.
  • In McClendon Robotics, hidden in a room behind a screen (the one with all the robotic Little Sisters and the audio log about them by the corpse).
  • In the Air-Tite Archives in the New Accounts section (to the right soon after the entrance), requires the Electro Bolt Plasmid first.
  • In the Mag Locked section on the way to Porter's Office, requires the Gravity Well Plasmid.

Operations:
  • In the Storage room with the upgraded Rivet Gun, when you first enter the Programming Wing. Use Electro Bolt on the door to gain access.
  • Through the doorway near the Circus of Values adjacent to Felix Birnbaum's office in the Programming Wing.
  • Near the entrance to Climate Control, on the same wall as the Gene Bank in the Engineering Wing.
  • Directly in front of you as you exit the elevator to Exhaust Venting.
  • In Climate Control, in the room right of where the entrance to the Turbine is. You'll find it just before finding the upgraded Ion Laser.

-High Score:
"Get 9999 points in one game of Spitfire."

This achievement requires you to reach the highest score on the mini-game, Spitfire. This is a Asteroid style mini-game where you shoot asteroids and dodge there projectiles. The mini-game is located in Operations. Below is a useful video:

I can confirm what Kidon =Salmão Boladão= wrote: you missed an enemy for your research, load up an earlier save, record/fight that enemy, then respawn him and do this again until you fill up your research bar.

ThePugHybrid, for future players, would you kindly add this information and the ability to track research progress: press M, click on the tape button (right side), you'll see enemies list and 4 tiers bar.

I did some poking around before I moved on to 2, and according to a few stray comments, setting "-dx9" as a launch option and turning off the realtime reflections in the graphics options in-game were supposed to prevent crashing.
I've no idea which did what, but I got less crashing than I could have. And it didn't crash on saving... just.... a few times completely randomly. Probably due to filling up the stages with traps.

I gotta say the combat in Bioshock 2 is miles ahead of the first Bioshock... probably because I love rigging the battlefield with traps.
