Using Jake who is a good subject to use but this time a lot more symbolical approach then my usual arts.

I imagine the crows are his connection to the reality and by it to the other survivors - have them dead means he is loosing against his own mindset and disconnecting from his surrounding more then he would want to. A figth in the mind sometimes harder then a fight against a physical threat."
