What an absurd DLC.

The watcher is not a "return to form" to vanilla Rain World. Do people say this just because there are new areas to explore and "get yourself lost in"? Is it because it's "not goal-oriented until it is"? These qualifiers are far too vague and generalized to say that the experience is similar to vanilla Rain World. It's meaningfully nowhere near as close to vanilla Rain World than Downpour was really, but maybe I just played an entirely different game from other people...

Anyway, to the actual review. There are a few highlights so let me get them out of the way:

Music pops off again. IMO a lot of if not even half of Rain World is made by its music, and even though this obviously isn't as good as vanilla, it's still ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bangin. James Primate and others delivered again

Lots of the regions were also fun to go thru + the modded regions they chose to add were definitely the cream of teh crop IMO (ignoring the bugs... lol). There's also a spoiler region that is quite mindblowing with how genius its design is

Quite enjoyed the narrative, felt a lot of emotions in the end. The framing and takeaway I got it was really good and interesting. I don't think the devs were going for what I took but what they were probably doing is much more boring in comparison and not conclusive so .

The side-ending was also pretty good made the first bit of the DLC feel worthwhile.

Art was also very epic as usual so pretty......

Ok. Now the bad. lol.

THE mechanic just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks. After the first few hours the game just stops feeling like you're playing Rain World in almost any capacity because of it. Quite literally it just turns the game off lol . The justifications are cool but they aren't good enuogh justifications. The increased difficulty to "compensate" for this mechanic's existence just makes it worse too it's so sad

A friend of mine is 15 hrs in, I was watching them play and there was literally 1 moment after 2 hours of playing where ACTUAL WORLD INTERACTIONS were happening (like fighting a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lizard) and I went "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ were u playing rain world just now"

The world design is just random ass worlds glued together with almost no environmental connection to them. Depressing.... Vanilla was seamless and fully cohesive; Downpour catches you with really good surprises with additions and changes to the world. The environmental storytelling in The Watcher is almost completely lost aside for a couple spoiler regions

The new creatures also suck they are mostly either uninteresting, or just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass. There are some cool ones tho like the moth and ♥♥♥♥, but they are generally ass

Also the way the endings are done is super ♥♥♥♥. Only one that felt like an ending really was ending 1; ending 2 and 3 just felt like story beats basically, ending 4 is an actual ending but that's besides the point. Also 1 of the 2 story beats endings was kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pointless it just reiterated everything u already knew

Outer Rim honestly might have ruined the entire DLC though it was probably the worst design choice I had ever seen. It's super epic seeing it once or twice but ait gets really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Whatever the purpose was, whether it was to slow progression, "build lore", keep someone there for longer, e.t.c, this was the worst way to do it man ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ helllllllll

Also the novelty quickly wears off before the tedium and apathy and annoyance March In Like A Lion as u keep playing. It's expected considering ur going everywhere multiple times for so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long and THE mechanic just turns everything off. Whenever something does come up, any hype or novelty it couldve had wears off and is consumed by the apathy faster and faster. There's no compensation to this really compared to vanilla and downpour

Overall it's not worth it even tho I thought the narrative was pretty good... mauybe u could play the first bit though and get teh side-ending thats like a good 12 hours and the novelty doesn't wear off completely by then

Also its buggy as hell, its pretty obvious the devs didn't play the full thing (probably because of the crunch time even during 1.5)

Game of the decade in it's current state
Game of all time if he SOMEHOW sticks the landing
(I trust in Toby to not trip over himself and stick the landing. The writing has been insanely phenomenal and there has been no reason for me to think he won't aside for that it seems ridiculously difficult to)

Don't expect the polish of "minigames" to be at the same level as the games they are taking inspo from. Honestly aside for the climbing section they are definitely done well enough for what they are meant to be used for, and the climbing section doesn't really throw anything difficult at you

There's also like actually good as ♥♥♥♥ fights in this too? I was actually shocked at how fun some of them got

Some of the best music and jokes that Toby has ever pulled are in this. I actually cannot believe how well some of the ♥♥♥♥ is executed in here so far

The writing is throwing me for a loop with how detailed and aware of all of its parts it is.

Finally, there is a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ backtrack in this game in chapter 3 that feels ridiculously pointless with how the gatekeeping works for it with an arbitrary rank limit (if you choose to go for it if u don't get an S rank cuz u were busy trolling, ensure urself 1500 points and don't spend it until u get the S rank from one of the NPCs).
Otherwise though even most of the backtracking to get extra info and dialogue was also very good... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

an absurd level of thought and insanity must have been required to make this game

the platforming can get seldom really annoying
AND sometimes it feels like there's way too much stuff to do. It gets to the point where u become distracted by everything from everything, and end up making very little progress as a result
the story is also just w/e a fun tid-bit at best

BUT other than that it's such a crazy experience and an insane level of balance of things that u can really play this however u want and it will just let u so u can just have the most enjoyable experience ever, the references and jokes are also really good, it's peak is in its core gameplay

I think if this game was revisited it could seriously be a WAY killer game, but right now I am not liking a lot of what I just experienced playing this.

The mechanics were really awful to the point that it put me off from the entire game's story (especially the shift lock-on, the entire factory section, immunity enemies and the general mechanic of just pushing ♥♥♥♥, the waiting 50 yrs to retry after falling/dying, constant flow interruptions).

The game's story is also presented in a really annoying way where there is so much exposition dumping and 4356893689535 flashbacks in between gameplay that it ends up being more like a 70/30 cutscene/gameplay ordeal, and the storytelling structure that was went with was so much "tell dont show" that everything it was going for felt like it hit way less than it would've if it just let the game speak for itself instead of trying to invest so hard on the "plot twist" moment that ends up just being another exposition dump while doing some really basic platforming in contrast to if the game just let it speak for itself.

ALSO WHY IS THE MOST BORING PART OF THE STORY THE MAJORITY OF THE GAME??? The plot twist and onward were way more interesting topics and ideas that could have been touched on, but instead they amass for like 25% of the game only or something??? The dialogue earlier in the game is also so bad (which is on purpose, but it doesn't really excuse it personally)

I could not emotionally tune myself in to the ending because of how exhausting it was to sit through the game. If even playtesting was more rigorously done, I think even just that would at least had let me enjoy the ending more. Otherwise I was just like yea wow that's definitely the ending I expected.

To me this game would have done much better if there was actually way more playtesting that was done before rollout, and if the general storytelling structure of the game was handled in a WAY different manner that didn't rely so much on cutting between the gameplay, and constantly spamming flashbacks and exposition dumps on your face

Idk that's mainly the impression and issues I got from this game, and they are so tremendous that I can't consider this game good, or something that should be recommended.
