Early Access Review
Ever wondered where the other geeky, introverted, unusual people are?

Whatever you think VRChat is, it's far, far more than that. It's a place to meet fun people. It's an ever-growing collection of worlds to explore. It's an underground rave. It's a place to get smashed to the point of passing out. It's a realistic racing game, a flight simulator, a surreal walking sim, a dungeon crawler, a Kamehameha arena shooter, a giant toilet that you can flush Elon Musk down on a flying carpet...

It's a crucible that will break you and reforge you into your truest of selves - if you make it through. It's an insane asylum run by its inmates. It's an endless garden of wonderful yet severely broken people to meet, befriend, romance. It's a BDSM kink club.

Oh and you don't need VR to play it! You can also enjoy it on desktop, and even... your phone? why would you-

Why are there femboy thigh pics on my phone?
Why indeed. Before such lofty questions can be answered, let's talk about how exactly this glorious mess works.

You choose an avatar - probably something basic at first, but you'll find/buy/make stuff more fitting for you down the line - and join a world. Probably a public one at first. You'll probably meet an Adolf, a few meme wizards, some annoying American teenagers, and eventually someone worth talking to. Maybe you'll meet their friends. They'll show you around. Teach you the basics.

Once you're somewhat comfortable, you'll notice just how impossibly huge VRChat is. There are so many worlds, and more are being added daily. Everything is completely free, of course. Being able to find good worlds and avatars is a skill, but there is so much to find. Most worlds are just hangout spots - apartments, cabins, clubs, campgrounds; a huge chunk, however, can be only described as "experiences".

You crashed so hard, your panties are showing
Actual quote from a car crash in a Mario Kart recreation world, btw. The person in question fell from their seat IRL.

Yes, there's Mario Kart, but also other racing worlds. Some aren't racing per se, more like sightseeing; drive a car while chatting and taking in the sights. There are also lots of other vehicles, mostly planes; VRChat fighter jet pilot community is strangely large. Yes, this means PVP, if you want. There are some amazing walking sim experiences which normally I'd gladly pay for on Steam. Let me think what other interesting things you can find:

- a recreation of the Midnight Bar from VA-11 Hall-A (always full of good people)
- the Backrooms
- a horse riding simulator
- yoga on a goat
- a recreation of Just Dance
- pillow fort builder
- dreamlike vistas
- a fighting game where you literally draw your weapon (with a pen)
- painting worlds
- an otherworldly meadow
- an art gallery
- a cool world full of drinking games
- a penthouse bedroom furnished with lots of BDSM equipment

Oh yeah. I should probably start talking about that.

So what's with these femboy thigh pics?
Ugh, where to even begin here? Phantom Touch. Tl;Dr: After some time you'll end up actually feeling stuff that happens to you (provided you're using VR). If that sounds absurd to you, it did to me as well, and yet here I am; it's a thing and let's just leave it at that for now. You'll end up feeling all kinds of sensations: warmth, pain, yes, but also things like being caressed on your face, kissed on your neck... and yes, that too.

As such, a lot of people treat VRChat as nightlife simulator. No, simulator is the wrong word; just nightlife. Your brain will accept it as real pretty quickly, and there's the convenience of not having to go home at 3 am, no danger of being physically assaulted, and you can drink for cheap instead of paying extra at the bar. Oh, and if someone's annoying you, you block them and both you disappear for them, and they disappear for you. Others will see you both but you won't see (or hear) each other.

And make no mistake: those are real people out there (ok, I've seen some chatGPT bots but they're awful). People who have discord. Phones with cameras. App-controlled sex toys. And, of course, there's ERP (Erotic Role Play), and it can be as serious or as funny as you want it to be. By this standard, waking up after a drinking night and finding some femboy thigh pics on your phone doesn't sound too weird now, does it?

Okay, but why femboy?
Tbh, it was transgirl thighs, but femboy sounded better. It doesn't matter that much anyway; after you spend enough time in VRC, distinctions like those slowly lose all meaning. I won't get too much into that here; instead, let's talk about perception of other people.

When you meet someone, what do you notice first? Probably their looks. Their face, their outfit, their body. Then, maybe their body language, their voice... and then, if you end up talking to them, things like their personality and such.

Here, though, chances are you'll have a stranger's avatar turned off completely for performance's sake, and instead you'll notice their voice (should they speak), maybe some of their body language, but the biggest thing you'll see is their behaviour and choice of topics. As such, it's a lot easier to get to know people personality-first, and only later enable their avatar... and maybe, someday, see their actual face (and/or body).

Here, people really do not care what your physical body is like, and you'll get judged purely for who you are deep down. So people feel very comfortable expressing parts of their identity they wouldn't in the meatspace. And VRChat is also still very anonymous, so the danger of being doxxed/exposed is very low.

"Stroke my tail as you do it~"
This is a good moment to point this out: in VRChat, you don't really roleplay a character. You're yourself. Just perhaps a little idealised and exaggerated. Sure, some people lie for attention, but for the most part it's not really a thing. Partially because seeing your avatar reflected in a mirror as you talk and move - and the avatar at least somewhat correlates to how you see yourself - your brain accepts this: Yes, this is me. Who else could it be?

You become the avatar. The avatar becomes you. Things get weird. If your avatar has a body part that you don't, how does it feel when it's touched? My avatar has horns, for example; they feel teethy. I don't like them touched. A person I know has a tail, and they do like it touched quite a bit. And what if the avatar is of a different gender than your physical body... and yet it feels right?

Is it then any wonder that there are so many LGBTQ+ players there? Lots of furries, too, and pretty much everyone is some kind of neurodivergent. The people deemed freaks by the society at large are instead the majority here; embracing diversity is required to have any real fun. And once you do, and everything just clicks, you'll wonder: why is this not the norm?

What have I been doing with my life?
Everything I wrote contributes to the inevitable conclusion: if you let it, VRChat will change you. Awaken you. It reminded me who I once was, and made me want to become this person again, but this time do it right. And so I did.

It started a cascade of events which caused one of the biggest changes in my life. My story has been paused, and VRChat pressed the play button again. I knew I couldn't go back; so I put everything on the line - and won. I found my way.

I can't promise the same will happen to you, but I've heard similar stories all over the place. And even if nothing this grandiose will happen, VRChat is still a very nice place to just meet people and engage in weird shenanigans.

Enter the underworld. Perhaps you'll find something long lost. Perhaps you'll lose something instead. Maybe even yourself. Tantalising, isn't it?

As someone who's not french, being a plant is the best thing this game gave me the opportunity to exist.

@Miyakuli BUT WHY? It sounds so good, to the point I'll actually seek out the person if I hear the accent, just to listen in for a bit. Then again, some people find my accent nice, which, uh... I don't. So I get it.

@Sickles I get the sentiment. There are some more realistic ones (e-boy, e-girl) but they feel very cookie cutter and still kinda anime-ish. There is variety - I've seen a (French) guy use a literal houseplant as an avatar, there are dinosaurs, furries, monsters, photorealistic scans of people and video game character rips, animals... also, avatars tend to grow on you. I'd never have thought I'd identify in any way with my bullboy, and here we are. But yes, things are bound to get better over time.

@FluffyFemprincess Thank you! 6k is IMPRESSIVE. I'm assuming there's sleeping involved. But I'm happy that there are more people whose lives have been improved this way!

pure poetry! this... is the most accurate review of this platform i have seen so far!
you really do have to live it to understand it, but my oh my. 6k hrs later, i wasnt playing a game, i was experiencing a new reality, one that i too have changed myself back to my old roots in life again in some ways, becoming the person i want to be again even in real life!

>>But it needs to be lived to be truly understood...<<
Oh, I can feel some of the effects with just a 2D steam avatar, let alone a VR one, and in many other ways... I don't need my meat reality supplemented/shattered just yet xD Unless... I suppose what doesn't appeal to me with VRChat is the predominant anime-ish aesthetic of the avatars, from what I've noticed. (Yeah, I'm saying it as a VN fan ;P) I get that more realistic styles would just lead to creepy uncanny at this point, but I don't know, maybe more variety? I just can't picture expressing my "true self" or whatever looking like an anime girl :tohkoterror: But I guess that too shall pass; VR is still in infancy.

That's typical of every french, we hate our english accent xDD (at least when it sounds french lol).
Vitlöksbjörn 21 May, 2024 @ 5:09am
@Miyakuli Thanks! My favourite thing to do with French people is to make them say a phrase from Widowmaker, a character from Overwatch. And there's a lot more English speaking French people (mostly women, strangely) on VRC that you'd expect! And they all hate their accents...

@Krow Yeah, well, maybe it wasn't your time. Or maybe you're one of these who don't get affected after all; you didn't find -it-. I know a lot of reclusive introverts who did find their place there, but I know a lot of people who remained quiet, even if a bit more comfy around strangers.
Lömsk Kråka 21 May, 2024 @ 4:40am
Heh, as I see your case for VR-Chat, I also embrace the fact that I am 100% a reclusive introvert, and jumping into VR-chat did nothing to mitigate that. Maybe that is more a me thing but still! Spicy review all the same! ;)

That was such a wild review x'DDD and an interesting experience to read lol bravo!
