Early Access Review
Gray Zone Warfare.

I will start off by saying, this is not a "Tarkov Killer" and it was never meant to be. While the 'JigSaw Inventory System' might seem the same, the similarities fade around there. If I had to unfairly compare GZW to another title, I would say that it plays similar to a title in the Arma series. However that doesn't do it justice.

This will not be a full review of GZW down to every detail. Rather a look at a few places I feel are not being touched.

Performance
Let's get this out of the way first. GZW is built on Unreal 5, its using bleeding edge technologies that have yet to be mastered or refined. They call it bleeding edge for that very reason. GZW Performance as it stands now leaves much to be desired.

- Client Performance
Client performance struggles to even get close to the target of modern monitor refresh rates. GZW does offer many different frame generation techniques to help combat this, however some leave the game washed out and others might report frame generation making them feel "sick". I strongly believe Client Performance will be improved quickly as they collect data and information on the different types of systems.

- Server Performance
So here's the other piece of the puzzle. Not all performance is client related. If the server is suffering, so do the clients. Especially in a game like GZW. Being server authoritive, Your information must be sent to the server, verified and sent back before that action is allowed to go through. However GZW is using systems like GAS (Gameplay Ability System) to help combat this. Right now, server FPS is also low. This mean, actions are slow, increased input time, AI have slow reaction times or don't respond to death, rubber-banding, and a whole plethora of other issues. Including as stated above, bleeding into client performance.

Visuals
The game is visually stunning. Not much more needs to be said, the textured look fantastic. Their in house SKALLA terrain and vegetation system seems to be working great. The models look great, and there's a whole host of tiny little effects that just add into the immersion. Tree's blowing over when a Little Bird flys over, your pants ruffling in the wind. Bushing and vegetation bending and moving when AI or players move through it. That's one thing Unreal excels at if used correctly. Some great ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ visuals. You know, at the cost of performance.

Bugs & Issues
Oh, its an Early Access title for sure. If you're looking for a smooth play experience, stop right here and take a break. We'll see you in about a year of development time. The game is suffering from a couple major game breaking bugs here in its start to early access. The developers have been fast to fix these issues though and are currently releasing HotFixes as well as working with the community to solve these issues. The Developer to Player interactions that I have seen have been great and mostly positive.

The final breakdown or TL;DR
  • Performance leaves much to be desired (Developers have noted improvements in the works)
  • Servers need some love.
  • Game looks visually stunning.
  • Some Major game breaking bugs at the moment (Hotfixes in the pipeline).
  • Strong communication with players (As of right now).
  • Client FPS Struggles on modern day hardware of some configurations.
  • Squad based combat that's both Tactical and Immersive.
  • When everything works, its FUN!
  • Good amount of content for an EA.

If you enjoy Tactical shooters and can stomach a true EA title: It's a recommended buy.
If you want a smooth gameplay experience with no bugs and reactive AI: Like your local crosswalk says. WAIT!

It was never about linking an account. It was the fact that so many of our friends wouldn't be able to access the game.

Yes, I know 2.3 hrs on record this guy doesn't know a thing. You're absolutly right I have no idea but it is war-boner approved. Game performance was smooth, played like the previous title. I got this at a discount because the own the previous title. If you have yet to purchase a Planetary Annihilation game, and are a fan of RTS I would say go ahead and snatch this up.

It's eve online from 1999. Its clunky, the UI is terrible.

Think second life in space.

I have never played a game where the combat between two ships made me so angry that I had to go do push ups. 'pew' 'pew' 'pew'. Mouse to steer WHILE holding left click.

Lord have mercy.

A few bug's currently, ocassional crash however with the amount of time and qualitity they actually put into this version it's really nice and refreshing.

PRO's
  • New landscapes that feel alive.
  • When visiting cities you are greeted with a new 3d visual of the city
  • Blood and Gore have been added
  • Stamina
  • Weapon Durability
  • Ships!

CON's
  • Occasional graphics anomaly
  • ++ Crashes, boy does it crash at the worst times...
  • It's still the old mount and blade engine

All in all I would say it's still worth a purchase at its currently price point.
