Many are my names in many countries: Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkûn to the Dwarves;
Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the South Incánus, in the North Gandalf;
to the East I go not.

The Nordic worldview then was one that acknowledged that the world was a cold, brutal place full of cruel and violent people, all predestined for suffering and destruction without even the hope that their gods might save them, a bleak and demoralizing prospect to say the least. A Zen master gave a course in Zen meditation. This guy who took the course called him a couple of months later, and he was angry. The teacher asked, what’s the problem. The guy told him that he’d been meditating for a couple of months now and nothing had happened. The teacher's response was, congratulations, it usually takes years before nothing happens.
