FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH: A 200-Hour Pilgrimage and the Hubris of the Open World
Over 200 hours. That is the tax this game levied on my life to secure every trophy, every "World Intel" scrap, and every perversely difficult VR challenge. Having been raised in the PS1 era, feeding on Ruby Weapon for breakfast, I can say with certainty: this isn’t just a sequel. It is a monumental, breathtaking, and occasionally exhausting love letter to a world we’ve inhabited for 25 years.

The Fellowship: Flesh, Blood, and Synergy
Where Remake dragged you through corridors, Rebirth flings the gates wide and lets the characters breathe. The party dynamics are masterfully executed. The spontaneous banter during world exploration, the jabs, and the quiet moments of respite provide a depth the original could only dream of. Red XIII and Yuffie are no longer just combat stats; they are fully realized people whose histories are seamlessly woven into the journey.

The Cloud-Aerith dynamics hit significantly harder than they did in '97. The intimacy and sense of impending fate are suffocating, further sharpened by the cryptic, parallel world of Zack Fair. This narrative chessboard is the exact reason why grinding through Crisis Core was a mandatory curriculum.

The World: From the Green Hell of Gongaga to the Spires of Cosmo Canyon
The level design deserves a standing ovation. Square Enix doses the challenges with surgical precision from region to region. The dense, vertical jungle of Gongaga and the majestic crags of Cosmo Canyon aren’t just eye candy; they test your mastery of the "World Intel" system.

Where the Gears Grind: Minigame Overdose
But let’s not be blinded by nostalgia. Square, let’s be honest: less would have been more. The sheer volume of minigames by the end felt less like entertainment and more like compulsive filler. When you’re on your twentieth variation of "do this to get the relic," the magic begins to fray. For a JRPG of this caliber, quality shouldn't be diluted by quantity.

The Synergy system? Brilliant on paper, spectacular in visuals, but let’s be real: after the 150th hour, most veterans revert to raw, calculated Materia combinations. It’s a fine addition, but the concept felt fatigued by the endgame.

Virtual Glory vs. Real Blood: The VR Curse
Now, for the "black-belt" frustration. The VR Combat simulations offer the game’s steepest challenges—and yes, I bled for them—but there is a fundamental issue: they are simulations. When we took down Ruby Weapon in '97, we fought the World. There were stakes. Here, in Chadley’s sterile digital void, victory feels hollow. It lacks the "ballsiness" of a world-map encounter; that visceral thrill of eliminating a physical monster from the reality of the game world.

Furthermore, Gilgamesh at the end of the Protorelic quest was a disappointment. Too much of a ham, too much fluff. He didn’t feel like a transcendent, cross-dimensional deity; just a jester with a collection of oversized swords.

The 100% Tax: Hard Mode Insanity
Let me be clear for the completionists: Hard Mode was not a challenge. For a veteran of my standing, it provided zero tactical evolution. It was simply an additional 30 hours of forced labor I endured solely to see that 100% reflected in my library. It’s a test of patience, not skill, and Square needs to learn the difference between "difficulty" and "tedium."

VERDICT
Despite its flaws and the occasional minigame fatigue, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a gargantuan masterpiece. It is the beating heart of this trilogy—a monumental ascent that is simply a sin to miss. If you haven't started yet, don't rush: prepare your soul, and most importantly, do not skip the foundation. Grind through Crisis Core, understand the past, and only then embark on this 200-hour odyssey. Because as I’ve said before:

"Witness the price of freedom. Then, and only then, are you ready for Rebirth."
