There is one consenting prayer among the Roman population, that they might dwell under the barbarian Government. Thus our brethren not only refuse to leave these nations for their own, but fly from us to them. Can we then wonder that the Goths are not conquered by us, when the people would rather become Goths with them than Romans with us?



Fellow soldiers, this is our last struggle.
If we win this battle, their power is crushed, and our freedom is secure.
Show yourselves men this day, for tomorrow it will be too late; spare neither your horses nor your arms, for whether victors of vanquished you will never need them more.
Remember that there is no safety for you but in victory; to flee is to seek destruction. Let not the multitude of the enemy dismay you; we are a nation fighting for our freedom, a country, for all that makes life precious; they are a hireling band of people of all races and tongues, divided by ancient hatreds and bound together by no common interest but their pay.
