it's Dome Keeper, but sideways, and with SLIGHTLY more depth of lore

it's not amazing, but it's OK way to fart around for half an hour or so

it's a lot like battle brothers, but with more RPG style upgrades to your units, instead of just gear. so basically Battle Bros But Better. it's fun. the "normal" difficulty isn't too crushing. the mechanics make sense, it's really good.


don't you love having a long fight, 8 of your guys vs a dozen bad guys, and you win, and you play another 15 minutes, and then when you leave camp, the game crashes your entire Steam Deck so it reboots and then the last auto save is somehow the start of that fight? isn't that great???


holy cow it takes an age to launch, then an age to get to the main menu, then an age to load your save THEN an age to let you move. when you join combat, guess what, it takes an age before you can do anything. does this mean you sometimes do what you didn't mean to do, because of the game lagging? absolutely YES. like, for example, when I'm sick of fighting the same fight (6th time fighting it) and I decide to give up on this party, go to the main menu, but the menu lags so much when I try to start a new game I wind up hitting "continue" (not a one-off, this happened THREE TIMES in a row).

also on the performance front: this game SUCKS my battery like it needs $20 for a fix

I got this from a humble bundle, so I didn't pay a ton of money for it. and based on the roadmap it LOOKS like they're working on this game, and hopefully will get the performance issues/bugs handled. based on older reviews, it seems like it used to run a lot smoother. IF they fix all those things, this game will be a super easy THUMBS UP

I like this game, and you might too, but it's hard for me to fully "recommend" it

1. the gameplay loop is nice. it's magic and fantasy version of battle bros, with some darkest dungeons type dungeon crawling added, it's nice
   
2. the animations are decent, the sprites all look great
   
3. the dev is responsive on the steam forums to talk about the game
   
4. it's never boring
   
5. when I say it runs great on steam deck, I mean the battery lasts FOREVER on this game

1. there are only 8 classes, with about two ways to "build" each. 8 isn't a tiny number, but compared to other games it's also not a ton
   
2. the classes aren't that varied/balanced. ice mage freezes guys and monk is basically indestructible tank but lightning mage does ranged damage just like an archer (but worse). valkyrie and fire lance both have painfully similar move sets, except his is better and she has a bunch of pointless buffs.
   
3. party composition is boring, too. you're going to want a healer. you'll never want a bard. archers and monks are way more effective than mages. I have two full parties in my roster right now, and they're basically identical because when I tried to switch it up it just made the battles take way longer for no benefit.
   
4. the battle map sprites are class driven. meaning if you have two of one class, they look identical, all the time. one
   valkyrie built for speed and another for taking hits in the same party? you better watch those profile pics like a hawk because they look identical on the battle field.
   
5. the battles are all the same-ish, and the story only exists if you read huge amounts of dry text in tiny boxes. you're never going to have a fight on two boats and the logistics of that impact the fight, or anything like that. it's all just one generic battle field, with scattered obstacles, over and over forever.
   
6. the game is no longer in active development. normally I would say "who cares, the game isn't 'abandoned' it's finished. BUT this launched with a goal of 21 classes, but that's no longer a work in progress, just a nice idea they used to have. it also means that lots of the negative points above, instead of being small things that will improve one day, are instead systemic issues dragging the game down will never be fixed.

I like it. I got it in a bundle for next to nothing, I like these types of games, and I think this is a decent game of this type. however it's hard to recommend, because it has a lot of obvious, glaring room for improvement.

The lack of a tutorial turns the leaning curve into basically a brick wall - BUT if you have played other deckbuilders before, and you play DELVE mode (which is not super obviously the right place) - this is a really fun and interesting and compelling and hard to put down game!

I might make a short getting started guide, because it's really not easy to dive into. my first half an hour resulted in a thumbs down review, but I gave it another shot and I really like it a lot, now

YES, I like this game a lot. it's nicer to play than HOMM3 on modern systems and it adds a good amount of new ideas to make it more than just a remake of a classic game

NO I do not. the game is built around 4 "songs" (hence the title) which are really fantastically done stories about the 4 different factions in the game. they have actual songs, the music style for each faction's story is different, it's fantastic.

they said the first DLC would be to improve the gameplay of the undead faction. compared to HOMM3 the undead are very weak and even compared to the other factions, they don't feel different enough current state. there were several updates, and apparently that DLC is nearly completed. however they decided not to make more quality DLC and focus on cash grabbing by pushing out many small DLCs with new factions without any of the supporting campaign content to make new Songs for each new faction

to me, this really undercuts the magic of what makes this game special. I'm writing a negative review to warn you that I wouldn't recommend this game based on the direction it's headed now, and also hopefully to get the dev's attention and let them know that a fireaxis meager parceling out of content is not what this game needs.

it looks cool and it's fun to play, but there's a jumping puzzle about 5 mins in that's unavoidable and pretty much a hard stop for me

if you suck at platforming or just don't want precision jumping in your run-n-gun, then be warned

I don't like it. I love tactics games, I loved Bully, I wanted to like this, and it's just boring and bland and bad.

Tactics are really, really easy.

Like it's chapter 7 and every map I get S or SSS rank, on my first try, without even doing my best. Usually if I don't get the highest score it's because I didn't spam my over powered power up moves enough, because I simply didn't need to: Move up to guy, use power is all you need to beat every fight, if you use any tactical reasoning at all you'll perfect everything all the time it'll be boring.

Story is really bad mix of boring and hollow positivity.

Like, there's a good bit of "of course he sucks he's a MAN" and a decent amount of "anything main character does is awesome because everything about HER is just so SPECIAL and MAGIC" and that's fine, lots of tactics games have bad plots, but there really isn't anything else going on here. At all. Like not only do the characters all lack depth, but What's at stake? Some snowball fights. Like what? Who even cares?

I'll probably sleep walk through to the end of this game, since it's the holidays and this is low stress as it gets, so if there winds up being a shift that keeps the game fun but makes it actually engaging or have depth, I'll let you know, but honestly this is a snoozefest and I wish I hadn't picked it up.

it's corny and cheesy but it's also chill way to pass a little time

doesn't feel nice to have something you paid for become 100% free for others

doesn't feel nice to have a game get gutted of its mechanics and turned into something totally less involved

so I guess I don't feel that great about this game, or about buying games from these developers in the future
