This review has spoilers for the game's ending.

This game looks good, plays good, and sounds pretty good.
River City Girls has pretty graphics, charming sprite work, great animations, and good-looking levels.
The movesets are fun, stringing combos together is rad, and the enemies fun to fight. The bosses are a little on the annoying side, but aren't as cheap as they could be. Fights never take too long, and the quests, for how fetch-quest-y they can be, rarely take longer than a few minutes to do. Exploring the city and finding all the different stores with all the different characters is fun! I can see a lot of replay value with New Game+ and the extra characters.
I'm not a big fan of the soundtrack, not because I don't like the genre but because half of the tracks are rather generic. There are a few real cool tracks though, and a few musical references to other games.

Some things could be improved, like the dojo giving you a clearer explanation of what the move you're about to buy does, or a bit more variety in enemy AI. Some of the jokes and references are, well, up to personal tastes really! We could've done with the kinda stereotypical Japanese accents of a few NPCs I guess. Apart from that, nothing offensive or bad.

The ending really took me by surprise, and not in a nice way. In a game with a predominantly female cast, it's a shame that the story resolves THAT way. It was disheartening that they used a meta joke to destroy any affection one could have towards the main characters. It's a real ♥♥♥♥ move to pretend your game is about cool gals kicking ass in the name of love and to PROMOTE IT that way only to turn around at the literal last second and reveal you played as delusional stalkers the whole time. Like, this isn't MGS2... This isn't smart or fun, it's just disappointing and as a woman feels like a slap in the face. You'd think a game about girls would treat girls right in its writing. For the people at WayForward or ArcSys who wrote this story, uh... putting women down and saying "girls be crazy!", in a game that was promoted as a cute fun brawler with (and for?) girls, wasn't the right move.

I'll add that the people complaining that the game hates on men are delusional and just looking for reasons to complain about River City Girls because it stars two women.

Overall, I had a good time, so I'm recommending it. Just... this ending sucks ass, alright? It sucks hard butt! You may as well just skip it.

This game starts out slow and tedious. Your pea shooter does little damage, and movement is very limited. However, with each new weapon or upgrade, the game becomes exponentially more fun, and fighting enemies becomes much easier. Movement gets really fun as well! It's an enjoyable ramp-up.

The level design varies from uninspired to good. Enemy placement is deliberately annoying in some rooms, which can be frustrating, but some other rooms are arranged to be traversed quickly as long as you keep your finger on the trigger. The boss fights are all fun, but they're far from being challenging - though they do have a lot of HP, the bosses have a limited number of patterns, and you'll be more impressed by the spritework of the attacks than by the difficulty of dodging them.

Collecting items isn't difficult until you get around 70% of all items: at that point, finding the remaining relics (and upgrade, if you missed any) becomes much more of a challenge. Fans of the genre should not have any trouble with it though, as the well-hidden items are locked behind familiar tricks.

I haven't died once, as I played pretty conservatively, and health drops are pretty tedious to get in this game. Thankfully there are a few ways to grind for health in select spots, letting you recharge your batteries. It was very rare for me to have full health going through the different parts of the map, and I fought most bosses with missing health.

The game is good-looking, though a little uninspired at times, especially when it comes to basic enemies. The levels look good, but some repetitive backgrounds here and there spoils their otherwise varied looks.
I got a kick out of the music! The chiptunesy synthwave is a great fit for the look and ambiance of the game, and I'll probably purchase the soundtrack at some point. Great job, though I would have loved a different theme for each boss, La Mulana style, fitting each area and boss fight more than the slightly generic theme we got.

There are a few flaws I can find with the game.
First of all, there are no Hard Mode or New Game+ options. That would have added some challenge and longevity to a game that's already on the shorter side.
Secondly, the anonimity of the player character is necessary, considering the setting and the corpse-run nature of the game, but that has the unfortunate effect of putting you in control of a faceless, charisma-less character. The titular Mummy isn't really all that cool either. Her dialogue is stilted and cliché.
Finally, the Tutorial Man is a liiiittle too eager to talk to you! His messages really pulled me out of the world and ambiance of the game, and I was afraid it would remain this way throughout the entire game. Thankfully, after clearing the first area, Tutorial Man only popped up a few more times for story exposition. Thanks to that, I could immerse myself in that messed up London that the devs cooked up for us, Monomer's music blasting in my ears as I juggled between weapons to tear open a path through gross critters and reanimated corpses.

Compared to another recent $20 WayForward game, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, it's obvious The Mummy Demastered was made on a much smaller budget and schedule, but I think you're getting your money's worth.

Hats off to WayForward, purveyors of quality titles since forever. Time for me to go back and chase the last few relics I'm missing.

This is the most fun I've ever had with a beat 'em up.

Streets of Fury EX certainly doesn't have the ambiance of Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, or the soundtrack of Streets of Rage, or the visuals of Capcom's Alien vs Predator.
But what the game lacks in artistic and technical prowess, it makes up for with its zany humour, large cast of playable characters, and awesome gameplay depth.
Each character feels very unique, and though a few can feel underpowered, they're still interesting in their own right. The combo system is super flexible - way more than I ever expected! Chain combos, special moves, dash and jump cancels, juggles, OTGs, and the coming update even adds parries to the mix. Hell we're still finding new ways to do amazing, super damaging combos!

Worth mentioning as well, a few internet and fighting game community figures are playable characters. Most of them are popular in France (this is a French game after all), like Mr Quaraté, Yamato and Bob Lennon, but you'll probably recognize Benzaie from the That Guy With The Glasses website. Well, the next update adds Kayane and Ryan Hart as playable characters as well!

This game is Heaven for completionists who want to get top marks on every mode, and want to master every character. There is a beefy challenge mode that will really test your skills, and higher difficulties for the main campaigns really bring on the pain. The one problem is the absence of online mode, but the campaign's second story will help scratch that multiplayer itch if you can't do local co-op (or local versus!).

And, hey, it DOES have an awesome soundtrack as well!

If you like bad video games, this is made for you! Abysmal controls, uninteresting abilities and boring monsters all come together to create some of the worst hack 'n slash battles you'll ever play. The level design sucks, the character design sucks, the animations suck, the voice acting sucks. Only the soundtrack is kind of decent, but that's certainly not gonna save this wreck of a game. I also wonder how I can unlock the option that makes my character wear clothes.

I sure am glad I only paid 1€ for this. X-Blades isn't worth any of your money.

Don't get this game. Online co-op could have kept it from being so despicably boring but it doesn't have online co-op. It's not good.

ARES is pretty great. Mega Man-esque action and a great soundtrack by the guys who did the Iji soundtrack. The boss fights are frantic in hard mode. The only gripe I have is the need to farm materials to get SS rank, but if you don't care about tha t it's a good game, good for speedrunning and no-damage runs too.
