Based on 50+ Hours Played. GreedFall is an ambitious RPG that is marred by mechanical disappointment but carried by excellent environmental design and an interesting narrative. Characters and companions, hailing from one of five different factions, are all enjoyable to interact with and the lack of clear antagonist allows for a refreshing setting. Ultimately, GreedFall is an entertaining story of exploration that unfortunately has lackluster combat.

A thoroughly enjoyable combat-focused 4X title with one major pitfall: base building. Although the colony and sector approach works well and creates an easy, perceptible approach to empire expansion, the actual depth of managing cities is lacking.

Combat is a very enjoyable experience offering a great deal of depth and personal touch in which you can often claw yourself back to victory even when heavily outgunned. Ultimately, Age of Wonders Planetfall thrives when the strategic and tactical elements combine and after 40 hours on the highest difficulty, I'm certainly very happy with the title.

Varying from highly addictive to punishing, Slay the Spire is a delightfully crafted deckbuilding and roguelike hybrid.

At a basic level, combat is easy to understand. You get a certain amount of energy or mana every turn, by default 3, and spend this resource on cards granting you defences or the ability to pummel your enemies down a peg. As enemies telegraph their intentions, the combat is elevated to a system in which you are constantly trying to find the most optimal solution to the puzzle. Over time, you’ll familiarize yourself with the moveset of the well varied enemies and you can end up with some genuinely intriguing combat sequences as the synergy in your deck builds up. Nothing is more satisfying than finally returning to the boss that gave you trouble before, only to show it your freshly unpacked card collection.

As a deckbuilding, roguelike hybrid the game does an excellent job with each respective element holding up the other very well. Without a doubt I can recommend Slay the Spire to anyone.

At the Gates is as interesting as it is unfortunately tedious. Which is to say it’ll appeal to a particular kind of hardcore 4X fan. Specifically, it’ll appeal to those with a penchant for the exploit factor. Exploitation of the environment and resource control. That is very much the main hook of At the Gates, you will constantly consume the depleting resources around you as you move your clans across the map. But as I try to find my way to Rome, I can’t help but feel that it needs more.

It needs more events to create more variance. It needs more intriguing research paths to pursue. It needs better AI and more advanced diplomacy. As it stands At the Gates has an enjoyable start if you like dealing with resource management, but it really falls apart once you hit the midgame.

Although it suffers from some skewed enemy and level balance, Book of Demons is a delightfully beautiful papercraft homage to Diablo (1) and similar classic aRPGs from the 90s. With a surprisingly engaging level of difficulty, this aRPG-lite does what it does very well.

A very unique game in both style and feel, it is an interesting title well worth checking out.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a welcome addition for turn-based strategy fans. A little low on customization and with some flawed balance, it manages to create an interesting setting with solid core combat.

Stakes are high and the basic learning curve of figuring out gun ranges or learning when loud guns will attract more visitors is an enjoyable experience and the core of the combat is rocksolid. Being able to jump over walls with certain mutations, blast enemies off rooftops and juggling skill recharges in the right order is all enjoyable. It is a combination of poor balance and lack of customization that takes away most from what is otherwise an enjoyable turn-based strategy experience in a unique setting.

Far from essential, Bastard's Wound adds a number of interesting storylines for existing Tyranny fans, but does little else.

Unfortunately Bastard's Wound doesn't address the mechanical issues of the core game, nor breaks the repetitive nature of combat as it does not introduce new enemy types either. Narratively, it stumbles in a few places but generally proves to be a well written experience that is certain to be enjoyable for existing Tyranny fans. Although Bastard's Wound's main addition is that of a new zone, the best sections are easily the new Verse and Barik companion quests that finally take the time the core game didn't in order to properly flesh out their storylines and show more sides of these dysfunctional party members.

It doesn't add much, it certainly doesn't fix any existing issues, but if you enjoyed Tyranny as it is you'll enjoy Bastard's Wound as well.

Based on 100+ hours and multiple playthroughs on the Path of the Damned difficulty, Tyranny is a unique and competently made reactive cRPG well worth playing. Although it is severely hampered by its ease in difficulty (once you hit level 15 you virtually can't lose) which is a result of the game's lack of resource management and lack of friendly fire, Tyranny sets up a very interesting universe for you to immerse yourself in all the while offering 4 significantly different narrative playthroughs, promoting replay value greatly.

Flawed (easy, lack of enemy variety, rushed final act), but all the same more than worth the experience and remains fun, fluid and without frustration throughout.

Based on 80+ hours throughout multiple Deity difficulty games.

Civilization VI has a lot to live up to, most obviously its predecessor Civilization V.
Through the use of the excellent district mechanic and various reworked older elements such as great people, spies and religion it has introduced a lot more inherent conflict that wasn't previously present. As such, I've enjoyed every single victory condition (Science, Domination, Religion and Culture) more than I have before.

It still suffers from poor AI (now especially noticable due to the poorly executed agenda system) and sadly Civilization VI has suffered in the UI department as well, but regardless I've highly enjoyed my time and can definitely say it is a great basegame worthy of your time.

BASED ON 50+ HOURS PLAYED, NO SPOILERS:

Obsidian set out to recreate the wonderful Infinity Engine games and succeeded thoroughly. Although it deviates from the classics in quite a number of ways, it is a wonderful interpretation of what made those games amazing while distinctly setting itself apart as an amazing cRPG on its own merit. Pillars of Eternity showcases how much amazing writing can do while offering you immense control over your own narrative through the highly varied dialogue options. Combat is fast (comparatively) and highly enjoyable, offering a great stategic challenge and allowing the eleven different classes to have their own playstyle.

This is as close to a perfect cRPG as you will get.
