A pretty solid Metroidvania. Satisfying combat, with some (mostly) good boss fights, great artwork, and very interesting level design in certain places. The character design is very creative as well, I am a big fan of Thalamus' first encounter and the areas related to him.
I will say though I feel this game gets a little suffocated by its own influences. It's very easy to see what sources this game takes inspiration from (most obvious, Dark Souls). The game doesn't really succeed in combining all these parts into a new, unique experience. That's not to say it's a bad game. But everything about it feels familiar. It does make some aspects of the game worse though, like the story. A lot of the major plot points towards the end of the game feel really hamfisted and ripped straight from Undertale. For example, the fourth wall breaks like where Thalamus refers to you by your computer's name, the Undertale style "please don't play NG+, you'll ruin their happy ending" which doesn't work at all since you barely get to know any of the characters enough to care. And a lot of other stuff, where it just felt like the devs really liked Undertale's ending and wanted to recreate it.
I'd still say it's a fun game, worth your money if you just wanna play another souls-like or metroidvania. Just don't expect anything ground breaking.

There's a lot I like about this game and some stuff that I don't. I would've loved to see what these devs could've come up with if they had more resources. A lot of the ideas they have here are great, the mechanics are solid, the voice acting is good. This would be fantastic if it was a full scale triple A game.
Unfortunately though indie devs can only do so much. This game is really short. Only about 10 hours to complete. There's only 4 levels and some areas come off pretty uninspired. The swamp is repetitive and its easy to forget where things are or where YOU are. The catacombs and fire temple just look boring. The fire temple took like 2 minutes to get through. The best level by far is that obsidian castle (idk what any of the areas are called). Really interesting design, takes a good amount of time, and enemies are laid out interestingly.
No fast travel (that I know of), and a lot of intentional backtracking. There's a lot of running around the same areas in this game (and again, it took 10 hours to beat).
Exploring doesn't always feel very rewarding as the items you get aren't always that great. Unless it's something for upgrading your weapons, I could care less.
Maybe this is just a me thing but the parry mechanic's timing feels off. I'm used to trying to parry at the exact moment an attack is going to hit me as that's how it works in most games, that doesn't work here. I'll start to pull out my parry amulet but I get it. I usually have to hit parry earlier than I'd like. Feels like the correct timing for a parry here would be considered sloppy timing in any other game, but maybe I just suck
I know it sounds like I hate this game but it was still pretty fun. There's a lot of good ideas here. The whole "Shell" part of the title is really cool, inhabiting dead warriors with their own stats, perks and upgrades. I would've liked if there was just a bit more differentiation between the shells. I also would've liked if there was MORE. There's only four and they are all in the swamp area. Similarly there are only 4 weapons, all fun to use but again, I would've liked MORE
The hardening mechanic is really cool. Used properly it can get you through the whole game. In fact I went through half the game without even having picked up the parry (I didn't realize the tower had a second floor) and I was fine. And while I don't like using the parry too much, the empowered riposte upgrades are a neat idea.

I think this game would've been genuinely amazing if it was as large as a Dark Souls game, with more weapons, more shells, more upgrades. I hope these guys get the resources to make a sequel on that scale.
I'm still gonna recommend it but maybe not for 30 bucks, cuz again it is really short and sometimes tedious. But I think the devs did an amazing job for themselves and I'm excited to see what they do next

The DLC is solid, I think some people are overreacting. It's not as hard as TAG1 but I find it much more enjoyable and well designed. TAG1's enemy additions were pretty boring and some of the level design was just frustrating in the wrong way. TAG2's levels feel solid and most of the enemy additions are actually cool. Stone Imps make you actually have to use the auto-shottie, which is a fun mod but usually a useless one. The only enemy that just sucks is the green prowler, frustrating for all the wrong reasons and just an absolute chore to deal with.
The final boss and cutscenes are pretty disappointing, was hoping for more of a "mirror match" sort of fight versus a more difficult marauder. Otherwise, good levels, decently challenging and the hammer is very fun to use.

Bought this game for the glitches, ending up finding a solid title and a lot of glitches. Most of them are just funny though.
7/10

A great game on its own merits but doesn't stack up to New Vegas. Still very fun to shoot things, meet new characters, steal everything that isn't nailed to the ground, etc. I just wish there was more to explore, not a lot of places you can go to and they aren't all that interesting. Wish there was more enemies as well, not enough diversity in the creature roster.

This game is fun as hell, Devil May Quake is an accurate description. Absolutely worth the money

I'm editing my review on this because I feel like I was too harsh when I first played it. That, or the game has gotten much better since the content updates it received.
I still despise the platform in this game. It isn't satisfying, it feels clunky. The worst moments I had in this game where I just wanted to alt f4 were doing the platforming challenges for the Bloodstained collab. It's even worse when I have to fight and platform at the same time.
The combat in the game is very satisfying. You have a very simple skill tree for your sword where no upgrade feels useless or like a novelty.
While I rarely found prayers to be necessary, there are a large amount of them to find and use and almost all of them are very fun. I would relate them to the powers in Bioshock Infinite, where you could pretty much go the whole game without using them, but they're there for you to have fun with.
I originally found the bosses in this game to be very lackluster and boring, and that still holds true for the original cast. However, the bossfights added in Wounds of Eventide and the NG+ Amanecida bosses are really good. Very challenging, and very fun to fight.
The art direction in this game is fantastic. The pixel art is beautiful, and drawing inspiration from Christianity to create a dreary, souls-like world was a good call. Sometimes it feels like characters are just saying words that mean nothing, but that's not a big deal.
It being a metroidvania, there is a lot of backtracking. When I first played the game in 2019, the only form of fast travel was from using specific portals located throughout the world, of which there were about five. This made backtracking incredibly tedious. Since then though, one of the content updates introduced a way for you to fast travel between the bonfire shrines, which makes the game much less of an awful trek.
NG+ in this game is a lot more compelling than in others. To go into NG+ you need to take on a gameplay challenge that will persist for the whole run. There is also the secret NG+ bosses for you to find and fight. Most games don't provide a good motivation for you to play again, this one does.

Seeing as a lot of things I had problems with were fixed or addressed in content updates, I felt it right to change my harsh review. My second playthrough of this game was wonderful (save the platforming...) and I expect I'll play it a third time in the future. 8/10
