Have got it cheap at steam sale and the soundtrack and card drops alone made it worth the deal making the game free tag along bonus. I should have added earlier buying game at 0.09$ and selling cards 3 drops at 0.20$ total was excellent return. As for the game, I could not get the hang of how to play it.

Sheer nostlagia and great game for old school shooter fans. This is where the insanity called Serious Sam began.

OK if anyone played the classics, the added bonus here are a couple of added secrets not much. And glorious HD texture. A couple of small things were cut down too. Enough has been written on it online. Lack of survival maps here is a let down. BUT the fun was still same. Fighting Ugh Zhan was still bad ass. The creeping sense of doom waiting in darkness inside temples was still same. The multiplayer death match community was a lot of fun sadly its dead now.

I request developers to make Deathmatch section F2P again.

EDIT to present day: AFTER 13 YEARS DEVS ACTUALLY PATCHED THE GAME AND IMPLEMENTED SS4 LEGION SYSTEM IN CUSTOMIZATION.
Insanely fun game. Great humour....Great enemies, combat modes, bosses and weapons and lots of fun. Play with free mind without tying to SS1 & 3 continuity and it works well. Great value if bought at summer sale here for FPS campaign lovers. Climax level is sheer mayhem.

This game had the best concepts that would have taken the SS Franchise up the next level....awesome new enemies like Orc Footballers, Multiple Bosses some of them outrightly insane to fight or hilarious. Lots of comedy, self jokes, interesting new combat modes, terret guns, hover crafts, All mauling Rollerballs to run in, Dinsoaurs to ride......Fighting Flying Dragons, even Mechbots to kill. Move over Transformers! Chopper piloting, Universal Survival Arcade styled Death Olympics even to divert to. And population. Civilizations in cities you visit not quite dead ready to help as well. Secret couples making out in bushes, Gay Zombie weddings!

Should have been damned immersive. The kind of diverse lands TSE threw up and wackiness one saw were fully explored here. The rushed release and untested bugs that came with the rush killed it. I was hoping the promised full version would be added with fixes as DLC later.

Its sad that fans rejected a great approach with closed minds and rejected it seeking a rehash of SS1. So SS3 returned to that roots and while it was a GFX win it still fell short a bit. I mean how many times can you keep returning to Egypt?

I still find this perceived mis-adventure more SS than other games because it is out and out don't think just shoot what moves mindless carnage all the way on a bigger scale even. I mean imagine even with a dozen Serious Bombs and mass murdering laser cannon hovercrafts unlimited you still need a fricking 1 hour to mow the endless waves all down in climax level. How cool is that?

NOTE: I actually hated it when I first played it expected a SS1 extension. I only loved it later on replay when I placed it on individual merit without expectations of SS1 heavy on mind. I have revised my opinion since and have loved it like hell. I don't have the number of hours I put in HD and BFE here because I had played non steam Disc version half a dozen times, same way I played original classics half a dozen times on CD Discs since first out in 2001 so steam hours dont show that love. I bought this game at steam only to complete the series and support the Devs. Because sadly the game was dead and bought only due to full basket at 90% discount. I recommend buying it on merit and have a blast.

To avoid game breakdowns play the Marsh Swamp levels in a sitting or from default game auto save reloads not your manual saves. That section of the campaign was most buggiest and game killer. I also suggest you back your saves as you progress as at times player profile crashed and saves were lost needing a replay from start. So backed saves indeed can save the day literally and your game!

Note: Game crashes seem fixed. But Forsaken Compound map is still bugged. Avoid quicksaving there. Achievements Added. Have a Blast

Mindblowing fun, especially Survival, Co-op and versus games.

I doubt there is much to be said about Serious Sam The First Encounter and Second Encounters. Much has been said. This is a HD remake. It retains 98% of the classics game core but I find a couple of changes disappointing. More secrets were added from original encounter.

The new models, textures, effects are brilliant and make game look more real. The originals looked real enough back then but here adding proper grass, bright sky, dark dungeon torch effects looked better. More secrets were added to original. Some secrets were changed. The rotating room in The PIT is now kept static with irritating 3 rotating platforms throwing your aim and balance off. I hate it. Then exiting that room the slight anti-gravity curving passage that Kleers jump at you from is also gone, replacing the anti gravity fun joyride of going round. The exit curving passage where kleers attacked became flat. The opening intro scene in classic version of Serious Sam's Sirian spaceship crashing into Developer Crates is sadly cut. The flipping room and moving platforms timing with spiked roof secret in Ziggurat is replaced with a bland room where you need do a series of irritating luck based platforming to reach the roof. I have no idea why Devs could not retain the original mechanics. I liked the clear water in classics better than the murky feeling water in HD, a bit of realism I could do without. This is Serious Sam not CoD! Rest is fine. More better texture quality makes it better overall. Fusion lets you play Both Encounters as a whole campaign as it was originally conceptualized.

Campaign is still fun in single and coop mode. Some maps in Survival are fun like Bear City and some downright nightmare like Bend in Sand! Overall better experience except for those small issues I listed. Apart from these minor deviations here are some more aspects:
Campaign mode some maps do get bugged enemy spawns not giving full kills needed. But its still fun enough. There are deathmatch maps, you can play The First Encounter also in a go as one game in added fusion if you hve both games. [To unlock achievements you must play first encounter separately but]. The survival maps are fun. Some are really hard like Bend in Sand needing lot of skill and luck. I wish HD added couple levels more but its OK. The DLC 3 level campaign is more TFE extension not fitting in here technically. A short trip through what appears to be discarded first encounter earlier levels. It has one more survival map Triple Trouble. I suggest you finish getting all survival maps gold medals before playing the DLC to get related achievements else the lone DLC map will add to grind of achieving. The deathmatch community was very active till 2017-18 is now quite dead sadly. Maybe versus mode and demo should be made free as a demo again. if you own 2 encounters and Serious Sam 3 you can play it in better light and textures less bugged together as one campaign in Serious sam Fusion you should get it free. It however has separate set of achievements.

My only complaint is Devs think this game is Unreal Tournament they added like 30 achievements for Vs modes - Deathmatch, Beast Hunt, CTF, My Burden, Last Man Standing etc all with team based versions needing minimum 3-4 players with expectations one will win 100s of such games for achievements. Its too much and achievements should be realistic and based on core game. Any game having more than 25 Achievements becomes tedious forced labor. Here there are like 70 and half of them from a game mode that has no active community left sadly since older owners have moved on in 10 years since. The achievements were possible when vs games were F2P in demo mode. Thank God they kept this requirements minimum in BFE. My other complaint is Coin Coop and need to get coins and lifesavers in one sitting that is demanding given Sam maps are huge and forced battles take lot of time. Such missions should be based on when you play a map solo not as a whole campaign. Finding coop players ready to play such modes that long is hard. One should be able to handle it solo on own time map by map. This issue thankfully does not limit BFE.

Overall great blasting fun play it for survival and campaign. Still a must play for old school old classics fans. Must on and play.
