I discovered EVE Online back in 2009, and let’s be honest: at that time, the game already had the reputation of being a very complex, cold, and difficult MMORPG to get into, with a rather austere interface and graphics that made it feel like an old monument of space gaming.

But over time, EVE Online has evolved tremendously. The graphics have improved a lot, the ships look beautiful, the visual effects are far more modern, and many expansions have enriched the universe.

Today, EVE Online is not just a spaceship game: it is a true sandbox universe, built around economy, politics, warfare, industry, diplomacy, and social interaction.


What makes EVE Online unique is that it does not force you into one single way of playing. You can choose your own path, change careers, join a corporation, live in High-Sec, move to Low-Sec, join a Null-Sec alliance, or disappear into wormhole space.

Personally, I went through several stages: farming in Empire space, mining, Level 4 missions, and later living in Low-Sec, where the PvP side of the game truly starts to make sense.

That is also where you discover what alliance life really means: defending systems, watching intel channels, organizing fleets, managing territories, and understanding that in EVE Online, the game is not only about your own ship.


For PvE players, there is plenty to do:

There is also the whole industrial side of the game, which almost feels like a game within the game: resource extraction, refining, invention, module production, ship manufacturing, blueprint research, reactions, logistics, regional trading, and market speculation.

Some players almost never engage in direct PvP, yet they still heavily influence the game’s economy through production, hauling, or trading.


I also experienced the era of Walking in Stations, the expansion that allowed you to walk inside your captain’s quarters and finally see your character outside the ship.

The idea was amazing because it gave a real sense of scale to the universe. You could finally imagine what EVE Online could have been with living stations, social interactions on foot, and even deeper immersion.

Unfortunately, that feature was eventually abandoned, and it remains one of the biggest regrets for many veteran players.


But let’s be clear: EVE Online is a harsh game.

Even in High-Sec, you are never completely safe. Many new players believe that Empire space means absolute protection, but in reality, it only means that the rules are stricter.

You can lose your ship during a mission, make a fitting mistake, fall into a trap, transport too much value, or get ganked.


Ganking is part of the game, but we also have to be honest: there are different kinds of ganking.

Some ganks are economic, calculated, and done for profit. Others are mainly done for killboard stats, harassment, or simply to destroy an easy target.

And in my opinion, that is where we reach the least noble form of PvP in EVE Online.

There is not much glory in destroying a target that has almost no chance to fight back, especially when the goal is not profit, but ego, provocation, or farming easy kills.


The real PvP of EVE Online takes on another dimension in Low-Sec, Null-Sec, and wormhole space.

There, we are talking about:

• Baiting
  
• Fleet fights
  
• Tackle
  
• Logistics
  
• Doctrines
  
• Strategy
  
• Positioning
  
• Timers
  
• Sovereignty
  
• Diplomacy
  
• Espionage

This is where the game shows its true face: brutal, complex, sometimes unfair, but also incredibly deep.


Progression is based on a skill system that continues to train over time, even when you are offline.

It is possible to buy skill injectors to speed up your progression, but their effectiveness decreases depending on how many skill points your character already has. The more advanced your character is, the less value each injector gives, which helps limit abuse.

Monetization also goes through PLEX, a premium currency that can be used to buy Omega time, cosmetics, skins, clothing, or other services.

PLEX can also be sold on the in-game market for ISK, allowing some players to fund their account with real money, while others can pay for their subscription using the money they earn in-game.


The greatest strength of EVE Online is that it does not hold your hand.

It is also one of its biggest weaknesses.

The game can be fascinating, but also cold, punishing, unfair, and discouraging. One mistake can cost you dearly. A bad hauling decision can destroy weeks of farming. One wrong click can send a ship worth billions into the void.

But that tension is exactly what makes every decision meaningful.

EVE Online is not a classic MMORPG where you simply follow a story with well-organized quests.

It is a universe where players create a large part of the content themselves: wars, alliances, betrayals, markets, ambushes, trade routes, controlled systems, and political conflicts.

Very few MMORPGs can match that level of depth.


EVE Online is an exceptional game, but it is not a game for everyone.

If you are looking for a simple, fast, risk-free MMORPG that is easy to understand, this is probably not the right choice.

But if you enjoy deep games, persistent universes, player-driven economies, total freedom, space PvE, strategic PvP, industry, exploration, and alliances that write their own history, then EVE Online remains a truly unique experience even today.

It is a harsh game, sometimes frustrating, sometimes unfair, but also one of the few MMORPGs where every loss, every victory, and every decision can truly matter.


Recommended, but only if you are ready to learn, lose, start over, and understand that in EVE Online, the real tutorial often begins after your first major mistake.

Fly safe, trust no one blindly, and remember: in EVE Online, knowledge is often worth more than the ship you are flying.

I can no longer in good faith recommend wormhole space to anyone seeking enjoyable gameplay. It promises a mysterious frontier of riches and thrilling PvP, yet it's ruled by blowhard multiboxing veterans who treat EVE like a full-time career, running 5-10 accounts with Tripwire maps and premium intel tools to trap and farm noobs like me who just wanted a relaxing scan after work. Casual or solo pilots get podded with zero warning and zero fair fights.

Same old issue that plauges all free to play full loot open world MMOs.
Humanity.
Permanently online entities with multiple accounts inflating markets, cheesing progress and taking minimal risks, gank new players trying to progress beginner tasks for the heck of it. What are you gonna do? Spend all the new player currency the game tried to get you started with to fight back once, twice or three times? Maybe win? Thousands of hours of resources and multiple accounts stand ready to baby and nurse your attacker back to being combat ready again with vastly superior equipment and stats.
The fact that multi-boxing and alting is considered 'neccessary' to progress or even enjoy the game by a large portion of its community who are active perpetrators of said activites is just the icing on the cake.
