You were almost a Jill sandwich.
At last, this version has been released on PC! Now you no longer need to unpack your GameCube to enjoy this wonderful game.

You know those nights when you watch a horror film and, when it’s time to sleep, you can’t get the images out of your head? Well then, playing Resident Evil HD Remaster delivers exactly the same sensation. It is impossible not to react immediately to the furious onslaught of the zombies, which attack swiftly and violently. It is, quite literally, one fright after another.

The zombies will haunt your peace!

I will begin by saying that my first Resident Evil game was Resident Evil 7, followed by Resident Evil Village. I only recently played Resident Evil HD Remaster, and I intend to play every title from 1 to 9 (the remakes, where available) and achieve 100% completion in all of them.

I want to make it clear that I genuinely love this series and am truly excited to experience every installment to its fullest. Any complaints or criticisms I may have should not diminish anyone else’s enjoyment. Even if I find myself appreciating one entry slightly less than another, my admiration for the series as a whole remains unwavering. Otherwise, I would not even attempt to complete each game in its entirety.

It is wonderful to return to Resident Evil, and this version does an admirable job of delivering a visual update while warmly welcoming both veteran players and newcomers alike. With its graphical and audio enhancements, along with modernized and more fluid controls, this edition gives newer players the opportunity to experience one of the defining pillars of the survival-horror genre. Offered at an accessible price, Resident Evil HD Remaster is highly recommended for longtime fans who have followed the series since its earliest days and wish to relive the nostalgia of replaying one of the greatest games of all time.

Although certain environmental imperfections may slightly hinder the experience, the gameplay remains deeply engaging, sustained by its tense atmosphere. The series has always been built upon mood, scarcity of ammunition and resources, and the ever-present danger lurking behind every door. This remaster faithfully preserves the essence of the original classic.

Beyond its gameplay and atmosphere, however, what truly stayed with me was how deeply emotional the experience became. I love how this game made me reflect, not only about the story, but about life itself. It taught me quiet, meaningful lessons, the kind that linger long after the screen fades to black. Lessons I now carry with me into every game I play.

Just as Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village did, this entry reminded me that beneath all the horror, there is something profoundly human beating at the center of it all. Ethan’s story, especially, touched my heart in a way I did not expect. His love for his family, his unwavering determination to protect them, no matter the cost, felt so pure, so painfully beautiful.

By the end of his journey in Village, I found myself deeply moved. It wasn’t just the conclusion of a character’s arc; it felt like the closing of something sacred. His sacrifice, his devotion, his quiet strength… it all spoke to the idea that the true meaning of life is found in the people we love and the bonds we choose to protect. That love, selfless, steadfast, enduring, is what gives everything else meaning.

It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have had in gaming. Truly. It touched me in a place I didn’t even know needed to be touched. And even now, I still carry Ethan’s story with me. In many ways, it was the end of his journey in Resident Evil Village that solidified my love for this franchise.

In this installment, while zombies may appear to be the primary threat, the true antagonist is the Umbrella Corporation, and the betrayal of Albert Wesker, a fellow human and teammate who sacrifices loyalty for profit and power. The most dangerous threats are often not the obvious monsters before us, but rather the selfishness, greed, and corruption of those in positions of authority.

The entire tragedy unfolds from the Umbrella Corporation’s relentless pursuit of biological weapons for financial gain, coupled with Wesker’s personal ambition for evolution and dominance. Unchecked ambition, and the willingness to treat humanity as expendable in the name of personal advancement, inevitably leads to destruction. And, if we reflect honestly, we have witnessed more than enough examples of that in our own lives, have we not?
The remarkable visual and sound effects make the player feel truly immersed in the narrow corridors, opening ominous doors and venturing into suspicious places. Playing at night, alone in the living room or bedroom, is an experience reserved for the bravest. And woe to those who believe themselves immune to the shivers that begin at the base of the spine and freeze the very soul: they will be the first to lose their composure within the opening hours of the game.

The fear factor, already intense in the original version, has only increased with the new visual and audio effects implemented for the PC release. The entire sinister atmosphere has gained additional detail, and the realism is such that you will shudder simply at the sight of a zombie dragging itself toward you, no exaggeration.

Compared to the original version, Resident Evil HD Remaster features new rooms and areas to explore, new enemies, and additional animations. The original puzzles have been preserved, and several more complex ones have been added in the newly introduced areas.

Players may move freely throughout the mansion, without a strictly defined route. However, it is crucial to follow the “correct” path, as ammunition is scarce, the rule is conservation, and inventory space is limited. If you fill every slot in your inventory, you will be unable to collect any additional items. There is no option to discard unwanted equipment. Storage chests are scattered throughout the game, and only in these chests may you deposit unused items and equipment. The contents of one chest are shared among all others; that is, if you deposit an item in a chest on the third floor, it will be available in every other chest in the mansion.

Combine items such as ammunition clips with weapons, herbs that restore health, Ink Ribbons, and other useful objects. When playing as Chris, you will gather a set of disposable keys, each used to open a single door. In short, strategic thinking and careful item management are essential, as is knowing the right moment to run.
For newcomers and interested players, the following points should be noted:

No cutting-edge graphics; no support for VR headsets or related devices;
Large mansion and secret laboratory: many rooms must be revisited; no linear “corridor” levels;
No autosave: saving requires Ink Ribbons at typewriters;
No auto-healing;
Limited ammunition: reckless shooting is not rewarded;
Limited inventory space: the female protagonist manages her bag better than her male counterpart;
No directional indicators if you lose your way;
Defeated enemies are not necessarily gone for good;
The objective is survival, not eliminating every enemy (see limited ammunition);
No DLCs and no monthly subscription (sorry, I simply could not resist).
A timely recommendation for fully enjoying the game: use high-volume stereo sound and play in dim lighting, but only if you have the courage.

Words can hardly convey the emotions, describe the environments, or capture the terror the game evokes. The only way to experience it all is to gather your courage… and play.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Resident Evil HD Remaster to all fans of parts 1 + Director’s Cut, 2, 3, and Code: Veronica.
