In the late summer of 2004, a small city named Longchun (陇春) in northern China is beset by a series of brutal murders. Most people, while anxious, believe this has nothing to do with them.

And so does Xu Yuan (许缘), a forensic science student enjoying her summer break. But after she starts working part-time at a rare trendy café in the city, strange happenings begin to shadow her steps, like snakes rustling through the grass.

Characters

The MC. A native of Longchun, and a third-year student of forensic science at a local university.

She's rather sensitive and a stickler for hygiene, and tends to get hung up on details. She trusts in science, but has recently become obsessed with reading ghost stories online, often giving herself a real fright.

Runs a small café called Rainborn Café (雨生咖啡), where Xu Yuan works part-time. She's kind, soft-spoken, and always takes three spoonfuls of sugar in her coffee.

The café seldom gets customers, and almost all those who do visit are regulars. But every guest who shows up seems to be seeking something from her.

Xu Yuan's close friend. The two of them have known each other since elementary school, and grew up together.

A childhood accident left her with a slight limp. She seems to be plagued by misfortune, and has periodic strokes of bad luck. Perhaps because of this, she stops to visit every temple she sees, and always carries a medley of prayer beads and amulets that jingle as she walks.
