I can't find how to close the ticket, please close it :)
"System directory" is a step ahead, I agree, but unfortunately it does not tell what directories or subdirectories are searched for that missing file, so that the user could fix the problem. It's a system directory, I don't know what subfolders it needs and so on. Distros cannot distribute the ROMs, and I had the files in ~/.share/vice and many other locations, just Vice was not searching where it was. I do know that help page, sometimes when I REALLY need Vice I start solving this, but it would...
Solved with downloading the 3.7.1 ROM files, but still I think original request is a good idea. Could have saved from all this. But it's good that have I have newer ROM and VKD set - thank you! :) ~/tmp/vice-3.7.1/data$ sudo cp -r * /usr/share/vice/
Thank you for all the ideas. Well, not urgent, or not important. As I wrote I spend most of my life without a working Vice, due to this error. So maybe please consider the original request, or feel free to ignore if you find that bad idea. That would solve distro differences and so on too... I have the C64 right next to me, so I can survive this. ;-) I'll update my ROM files as Compyx advised, I have no idea how old this copy is. VKM files are indeed there, but no ROM files, so maybe /usr/share/vice/PLUS4...
Thanks, that's a good step ahead, but still it could say exactly where it cannot find. I guess from your answer that the "PLUS4" folder must be then moved to /usr/games/share/vice? I did it and get same error. Please note that on Debian 12 Vice 3.7.1 is available and that lacks that line: $ xplus4 Detecting ISA HardSID boards. Could not open '/dev/port'. Cannot get permission to access $300. Detecting PCI HardSID boards. No PCI HardSID boards found. Warning - No version tag found in config file....

I use VVV every day, so it's wonderful to see an update! Thank you!
Hi Mark, I would be interested in this feature too. We are trying to use bluetooth because the gimbal motor makes noise if the internal mic is used. There is an option in your settings to use "external microphone" but that does not use the paired BT headset. Thanks in advance.
