Description: Reading program for plain text books
Readaloud is an aide for learning reading also. It helps by displaying
text in large fonts and speaking a word or phrase selected by the user
and giving a definition of a word selected by the user. Readaloud
remembers the position of the cursor each time the program is exited and
returns to that point the next time the bookfile is opened in readaloud.
The readaloud command may be called with or without a bookfile argument.
The default if no bookfile is specified is to prompt the user
interactively for a bookfile to read after listing the available
bookfiles. The readaloud command with a bookfile argument displays the
bookfile in a large easily read font. The bookfile is a plain text file
that has a six line header added to the top of the file. The six line
header identifies the file as an Info mode menu file for GNU Emacs and
enables the speaking and dictionary features. Additional Info mode
lines may be present to create Info mode nodes and/or menus, but are not
necessary. Readaloud can display the dictionary definition of a word
when an internet connection is present. Readaloud can say one or more
words selected by the mouse on request. Readaloud implements another
request to read an entire section.
